The Port of Payra is a seaport located at Kalapara in Patuakhali, Bangladesh. It was established by an Act of Parliament in 2013. The port was officially inaugurated in 2016. It is located on the Ramnabad Channel near the Bay of Bengal. [3] The port is undergoing several Development and expansion and the project is expected to be completed in 2020. [4]
The development works include capital dredging of the port, the inauguration of eight ships, the first terminal, and the construction of a six-lane approach road and a bridge
The Payra Port Authority (PPA) signed a deal with Belgium-based dredging company Jan De Nul (JDN) for capital and maintenance dredging of 75 kilometre long main channel of the under construction Payra seaport. In March 2023, Jan De Nul completes capital dredging in Port of Payra. Now Port Access Channel was declared open for commercial vessels up to a draught of 10.5 m. Country's foreign currency Fund will be used for the dredging work under the Bangladesh Infrastructure Development Fund
Maintenance dredging will keep Port of Payra accessible, and Jan De Nul will perform the maintenance dredging of the port in the next phase of the project. Three Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers will be deployed to the Rabnabad Channel of Payra Port to fulfil the dredging requirements of the coming years. [5] [6]
Payra port was originally planned as China's bid for another deep seaport in its String of Pearls strategy. The construction of the port, which was being financed on a public-private partnership (PPP) platform, was therefore granted to a Chinese company. India, Japan, and the United States opposed the plan. [7]
In 2016, Indian companies stepped in to invest in the port. [7] An MoU was signed with Jan De Nul Group in 2016 to dredge the Ramnabad canal. [8] [9] [10]
As of 2017, Payra was primarily a governmental route for import and export. [11]
The Payra Port Authority is an autonomous agency which is responsible for the management of the seaport of Payra. [12]
As of 2021, plans to for a deep seaport at Payra have been shelved and the port was to be developed as a regular seaport. [10]
Transport in Bangladesh is dominated by roadways, accounting for the majority of both passenger and cargo traffic due to substantial development efforts since independence. BNS Sher-e-Bangla is the first all service naval base being developed for the Bangladesh Navy at Rabnabad, Patuakhali. With an area of 700 acres. this is the largest naval base of the Bangladesh Navy. Of that area, 300 acres of land have been developed for naval base and 400 acres is devoted for naval aviation and submarine operations. It is named after the 1st Prime Minister of Bengal, A. K. Fazlul Huq, who was known as Sher-e-Bangla or the Tiger of Bengal.
Matarbari Port is a under-construction sea-port on the shores of Bay of Bengal, located at Matarbari area of Chittagong division, Bangladesh. Construction of the port began in the late 2010s with the construction of a Captic Jetty for the Matarbari Power Plant, and later the Government of Bangladesh undertook a project to build a full-fledged commercial port. After construction, it will be Bangladesh's first deep-sea port. It is estimated that the cost for the construction of the port in the first phase will be ৳177.77 billions to ৳200.00 billions including the approach road.
The Port of Barisal, officially known as Barisal River Port is the second largest and busiest river port in Bangladesh after Dhaka in terms of passenger traffic. It is located on the banks of the Kirtankhola river in the city of Barisal. The port operates daily services between Dhaka and Barisal as well as most of the districts in southern part of the country including Chandpur, Narayanganj, Bhola, Laxmipur, Pirojpur and Barguna. It also operates inter-district routes around Barisal.

Prior to join here he was Chairman of Payra Port Authority. Before that, he was serving as the Director of Submarine at the Navy Headquarters. He also served as Director of Naval Intelligence and commanded BNS Haji Mohshin while he was Commodore.
The Bhanga–Kuakata line is a planned railway line in Bangladesh to connect Bhanga with the beach city of Kuakata in Patuakhali. It is planned to build by 2030. It will also connect Barisal Division to the rest of Bangladesh.
