Powell National Forest

Powell National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Utah on July 1, 1908 with the renaming of Aquarius National Forest for John Wesley Powell. On July 1, 1922 the eastern division of Sevier National Forest was added to Powell. On October 1, 1944 the entire forest was transferred to Dixie National Forest [1]

Washakie National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Wyoming on July 1, 1911 with 393,950 acres (1,594.3 km2) from part of Bonneville National Forest. On July 1, 1916 the remainder of Bonneville was added. On July 1, 1945 the entire forest was transferred to Shoshone National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Aquarius National Forest was established as the Aquarius Forest Reserve by the General Land Office in Utah on October 24, 1903, with 639,000 acres (2,590 km2). In 1905 federal forest lands were transferred to the U.S. Forest Service. On March 4, 1907, it became a National Forest, and on July 1, 1908, it was renamed Powell National Forest. The lands are presently included in Dixie National Forest. The forest included the Aquarius Plateau to the southeast of Capitol Reef National Park.

Paulina National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon on July 1, 1911, with 1,333,360 acres (5,395.9 km2) from portions of Cascade, Crater, Deschutes, Fremont and Umpqua National Forests. On July 19, 1915, portions of Paulina were transferred back to Crater, Deschutes and Fremont, and the remainder was eliminated. They are now part of Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest.

Port Neuf National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Idaho on March 2, 1907 with 99,508 acres (402.69 km2). On July 1, 1908 the forest was combined with Pocatello National Forest and the name was discontinued. The lands are presently included in Caribou National Forest.

Stony Creek National Forest was established in California on February 6, 1907 with 937,569 acres (3,794 km2) of land. On July 1, 1908, the name was discontinued after a portion of the forest was used to establish the California National Forest, and the remainder was transferred to Trinity National Forest.

Crow Creek National Forest was established as the Crow Creek Forest Reserve in Wyoming by the General Land Office on October 10, 1900 with 56,320 acres (227.9 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 it was combined with part of Medicine Bow National Forest to create Cheyenne National Forest. The name was discontinued, and the Cheyenne was renamed Medicine Bow in 1910.

Florida National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Florida on July 1, 1911, with 674,970 acres (2,731.5 km2) by combining Ocala National Forest and Choctawhatchee National Forest. On October 17, 1927, the Ocala Division was separated to re-form Ocala National Forest. On November 10, 1927, the forest was renamed Choctawhatchee National Forest.

Goose Lake National Forest was established as the Goose Lake Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon on August 21, 1906 with 630,000 acres (2,500 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was added to Fremont National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Hell Gate National Forest was established as the Hell Gate Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in Montana on October 3, 1905 with 1,581,120 acres (6,398.6 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was divided between Beaverhead, Deerlodge, Missoula and Bitterroot National Forests and the name was discontinued.

Nebo National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Utah on July 1, 1908 with 343,920 acres (1,391.8 km2) from the consolidation of Payson and Vernon National Forests and part of Fillmore. On July 1, 1915 the entire forest was transferred to Manti National Forest. The lands presently exist in Manti-La Sal National Forest.

San Benito National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in California on October 26, 1907 with 140,069 acres (566.84 km2). On July 1, 1908 San Benito was added to Monterey National Forest and the name was discontinued. Much of the land that once consisted of San Benito National Forest is now administered by the Bureau of Land Management Hollister Field office as the Clear Creek Management Area.

North Platte National Forest was established as the North Platte Forest Reserve by the General Land Office in Nebraska on March 10, 1902 with 347,170 acres (1,404.9 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with Nebraska National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Ouray National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado on February 22, 1907, with 273,175 acres (1,105.50 km2). On July 1, 1908, the entire forest was divided between Montezuma National Forest and Uncompahgre National Forest and the name was discontinued.

San Gabriel National Forest was established as the San Gabriel Forest Reserve by the General Land Office in California on December 20, 1892 with 555,520 acres (2,248.1 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907.

Santa Rosa National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Nevada on April 11, 1911 with 299,960 acres (121,390 ha). On July 1, 1917 the entire forest was transferred to Humboldt National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Selway National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Idaho on July 1, 1911 with 1,802,000 acres (7,290 km2) from parts of Clearwater National Forest and Nez Perce National Forest. On October 29, 1934 the entire forest was divided between Bitterroot, Clearwater, Lolo and Nez Perce, and the name was discontinued.

Sevier National Forest was established as the Sevier Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in Utah on May 12, 1905 with 357,000 acres (1,440 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1922 the entire forest was divided between Dixie National Forest and Powell National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Taos National Forest was established as the Taos Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in New Mexico on November 7, 1906 with 233,200 acres (944 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with part of Jemez National Forest to create Carson National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Toquima National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Nevada on April 15, 1907 with 368,000 acres (1,490 km2). On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was transferred to Toiyabe National Forest and the name was discontinued.

Monticello National Forest was established as the Monticello Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in Utah on February 6, 1907 with 214,270 acres (867.1 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 it was combined with La Sal National Forest, which was renamed La Salle National Forest for a short time. The lands presently exist in Manti-La Sal National Forest.
