Meade National Forest was established in Maryland by the U.S. Forest Service on April 10, 1925 with 4,725 acres (19.12 km2) from part of the Camp Meade Military Reservation. On December 2, 1927 the executive order for its creation was rescinded and the forest was abolished. [1]
Bonneville National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Wyoming on July 1, 1908 with 1,627,840 acres (6,587.6 km2) from part of Yellowstone National Forest. On July 1, 1917 the entire forest was transferred to Washakie National Forest and the name was discontinued.
Cascade National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon on March 2, 1907, with 5,886,840 acres (23,823.2 km2) when its name was shortened from Cascade Range National Forest and land was added. The Cascade Range Forest Reserve was established by the United States General Land Office in Oregon on September 28, 1893, with 4,492,800 acres (18,182 km2). On July 1, 1933, the entire forest was combined with Santiam National Forest to establish Willamette National Forest.
The Santiam National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon on July 1, 1911 with 710,170 acres (2,874.0 km2) from portions of Cascade National Forest and Oregon National Forest. On July 1, 1933 the entire forest was combined with Cascade to establish Willamette National Forest.
Sopris National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado on April 26, 1909, with 655,360 acres (2,652.1 km2). On August 7, 1920, the entire forest was transferred to Holy Cross National Forest and the name was discontinued. The lands are presently included in White River National Forest.
Port Neuf National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Idaho on March 2, 1907 with 99,508 acres (402.69 km2). On July 1, 1908 the forest was combined with Pocatello National Forest and the name was discontinued. The lands are presently included in Caribou National Forest.
Grantsville National Forest was established as the Grantsville Forest Reserve by the United States General Land Office in Utah on May 6, 1904, with 68,690 acres (278.0 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908, Grantsville was combined with Wasatch National Forest and the name was discontinued. The lands are presently included in Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.
Salt Lake National Forest was established as the Salt Lake Forest Reserve by the United States General Land Office in Utah on May 26, 1904 with 95,440 acres (386.2 km2). In 1905 all federal forests were transferred to the U.S. Forest Service. On July 1, 1908 Salt Lake was combined with Wasatch National Forest and the name was discontinued. The lands are presently included in Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest.
Benning National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Georgia on October 3, 1924 with 78,560 acres (317.9 km2) from Fort Benning. On December 2, 1927 the transfer was rescinded.
Dismal River National Forest was established as the Dismal River Forest Reserve by the United States General Land Office in Nebraska on April 16, 1902 with 85,123 acres (344.48 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the lands were transferred to Nebraska National Forest.
Boone National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in North Carolina on January 16, 1920, with 492,340 acres (1,992.4 km2). On March 25, 1921, Boone was combined with Pisgah National Forest and the name was discontinued.
Stony Creek National Forest was established in California on February 6, 1907 with 937,569 acres (3,794 km2) of land. On July 1, 1908, the name was discontinued after a portion of the forest was used to establish the California National Forest, and the remainder was transferred to Trinity National Forest.
Moapa National Forest was established in Nevada on July 1, 1908 with 345,005 acres (1,396.19 km2) from the consolidation of Charleston National Forest and Vegas National Forest. On July 1, 1915 it was absorbed by Toiyabe National Forest and the name was discontinued.
Cheyenne National Forest was established in Wyoming by the U.S. Forest Service on July 1, 1908 with 617,932 acres (2,500.68 km2) from part of Medicine Bow National Forest and all of Crow Creek National Forest. On July 1, 1910 a portion was eliminated and the remainder renamed Medicine Bow National Forest.
Crow Creek National Forest was established as the Crow Creek Forest Reserve in Wyoming by the United States General Land Office on October 10, 1900 with 56,320 acres (227.9 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 it was combined with part of Medicine Bow National Forest to create Cheyenne National Forest. The name was discontinued, and the Cheyenne was renamed Medicine Bow in 1910.
Colorado National Forest was established in Colorado on July 1, 1910, with 659,780 acres (2,670.0 km2) from Medicine Bow National Forest. On March 28, 1932, it was renamed Roosevelt National Forest.
Madison National Forest was established as the Madison Forest Reserve by the United States General Land Office in Montana on August 16, 1902, with 736,000 acres (2,980 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On December 16, 1931, Madison was divided between Beaverhead, Gallatin and Deerlodge National Forests and the name was discontinued.
Natural Bridge National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Virginia on May 16, 1918, with 107,038 acres (433.17 km2). On July 22, 1933, the entire forest was transferred to George Washington National Forest and the name was discontinued.
North Platte National Forest was established as the North Platte Forest Reserve by the United States General Land Office in Nebraska on March 10, 1902 with 347,170 acres (1,404.9 km2). After the transfer of federal forests to the U.S. Forest Service in 1905, it became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with Nebraska National Forest and the name was discontinued.
Santa Rosa National Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Service in Nevada on April 11, 1911 with 299,960 acres (121,390 ha). On July 1, 1917 the entire forest was transferred to Humboldt National Forest and the name was discontinued.
Taos National Forest was established as the Taos Forest Reserve by the U.S. Forest Service in New Mexico on November 7, 1906 with 233,200 acres (944 km2). It became a National Forest on March 4, 1907. On July 1, 1908 the entire forest was combined with part of Jemez National Forest to create Carson National Forest and the name was discontinued.
