Bridgeton is an unincorporated community in Raccoon Township, Parke County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. It is notable for its covered bridge, which was destroyed on April 28, 2005, by a fire set by an arsonist. A historically accurate reconstruction of the bridge was completed in October, 2006.
Hacienda Buena Vista, also known as Hacienda Vives, was a coffee plantation located in Barrio Magueyes, Ponce, Puerto Rico. The original plantation dates from the 19th century. The plantation was started by Don Salvador de Vives in 1833.
Carolina is a village that straddles the border of the towns of Charlestown and Richmond on the Pawcatuck River in Washington County, Rhode Island. Rhode Island Route 112 passes through the village. Carolina is identified as a census-designated place, with a population of 970 at the 2010 census.
George Washington's Gristmill was part of the original Mount Vernon plantation, constructed during the lifetime of the United States' first president. The original structure was destroyed about 1850. The Commonwealth of Virginia and the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association have reconstructed the gristmill and the adjacent distillery. The reconstructed buildings are located at their original site three miles (5 km) west of Mount Vernon proper near Woodlawn Plantation in Alexandria, Virginia. Because the reconstructed buildings embody the distinctive characteristics of late eighteenth century methods of production and are of importance to the history of Virginia, the site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places despite the fact that the buildings are not original.
Price's Mill, also known as Calliham's (Callaham's) Mill, Stone's Mill, and Park's Mill, is a water-powered gristmill about 2 mi (3 km) east of the town of Parksville on South Carolina Highway 33-138 at Stevens Creek in McCormick County. Its name in the USGS Geographic Names Information System is Prices Mill. It was built in the 1890s and was named to the National Register of Historic Places on November 22, 1972. At this time, it was one of the few remaining water-powered gristmills in South Carolina.
The Newlin Mill Complex, also referred to as The Newlin Grist Mill, is a water-powered gristmill on the west branch of Chester Creek near Concordville, Pennsylvania built in 1704 by Nathaniel and Mary Newlin and operated commercially until 1941. During its three centuries of operation, the mill has been known as the Lower Mill, the Markham Mill, the Seventeen-O-Four Mill and the Concord Flour Mill. In 1958 the mill property was bought by E. Mortimer Newlin, restored and given to the Nicholas Newlin Foundation to use as a historical park. Water power is still used to grind corn meal which is sold on site. The park includes five historical buildings, which were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and 150 acres (61 ha) of natural woodland.
Wises Landing is a hamlet located in Trimble County, Kentucky, United States. It is at the mouth of Barebone Creek, two miles from Corn Creek creek, at the headwaters of which is Corn Creek Church. In the 19th century it was a thriving port town for traffic inland into Trimble via the creeks. The community was served by the Corn Creek post office and was damaged in the 1937 Ohio River flood. In 1974, the Louisville Gas & Electric Company selected the area for the construction of a new power plant, which was completed in 1990. The Yeager General Store, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, is located in Wise's Landing.
Grassdale Farm is a historic home located at Spencer, Henry County, Virginia. It was built about 1860, and is a two-story, center-passage-plan frame dwelling with Greek Revival and Greek Revival style influences. Two-story ells have been added to the rear of the main section, creating an overall "U" form. Also on the property are a variety of contributing buildings and outbuildings including a kitchen, smokehouse, cook's house, log dwelling, and office / caretaker's house dated to the 19th century; and a garage, playhouse, poultry house, two barns, greenhouse, Mack Watkin's House, granary and corn crib, and Spencer Store and Post Office dated to the 1940s-1950s. Grassdale Farm was once owned by Thomas Jefferson Penn, who built Chinqua-Penn Plantation outside Reidsville, North Carolina, where the Penn tobacco-manufacturing interests were located.
Kerr Scott Farm, also known as Melville, is a historic home and farm located near Haw River, Alamance County, North Carolina. The vernacular farmhouse was built in 1919, and consists of a 1 1/2-story, frame, center hall plan, hip-roofed main block, with a one-story frame gable-roofed ell built about 1860. The property includes a variety of contributing outbuildings including a farm office, milk house, woodshed, dairy barns, equipment building / machine shop (1941), cow shed, gas / oil house, corn crib (1910), silos, and cow sheds. It was the home of North Carolina governor and United States Senator, W. Kerr Scott (1896-1958) and the birthplace of W. Kerr Scott's son, also a former North Carolina governor, Robert W. Scott.
Joseph P. Hunt Farm is a historic tobacco farm complex and national historic district located near Dexter, Granville County, North Carolina. The farmhouse was built about 1844, and is a two-story, three bay, Greek Revival style dwelling. It has a two-story rear ell dated to the 1870s and a full-width front porch added in the 1920s. Also on the property are the contributing small frame outbuilding, potato house, corn crib, two tobacco barns, smokehouse, large horse barn, packhouse, and combination icehouse/carriage house. Also on the property is the site of Breedlove Mill.
Rufus Amis House and Mill is a historic home and grist mill and national historic district located near Virgilina, Granville County, North Carolina. The house was built about 1855, and is a 1 1/2-story, "L"-shaped Gothic Revival / Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It has a roof with six gables and delicately sawn bargeboards. Also on the property are the contributing smokehouse, icehouse, privy, barn, chicken house, corn crib, mill race, former dwelling, and 3 1/2-story grist mill.
Welch-Nicholson House and Mill Site is a historic home and grist mill site located near Houstonville, Iredell County, North Carolina. The house was built about 1795, and is a two-story, one-room deep, transitional Georgian / Federal style frame dwelling. It has a gable roof, a double shouldered brick chimney, shed rooms across the rear, and a shed roofed front porch. Also on the property are contributing two-story frame barn, log corn crib, and the remains of the Welch-Nicholson House mill and dam.
Perciphull Campbell House is a historic home located near Union Grove in Iredell County, North Carolina. The house was built about 1820 by Perciphull Campbell and is a two-story, frame I-house dwelling. It has a gable roof, stone foundation, and exterior chimneys with stuccoed brick stacks. Also on the property is the contributing smokehouse.
Mount Vernon is a historic plantation house, farm complex, and national historic district located near Woodleaf, in Scotch Irish Township, Rowan County, North Carolina. The house was built about 1822, and is a two-story, three bay, Federal style frame dwelling. It is sheathed in weatherboard and has a full-width, one-story shed roofed porch. The house was designated a post office in 1822. Also on the property are the contributing log smokehouse, large barn, "lighthouse" or Delco house, corn crib, gear house, woodhouse, spring house, mill site, shop, and plantation office.
Barber Farm, also known as Luckland, is a historic farm complex and national historic district located near Cleveland, Rowan County, North Carolina. The Jacob Barber House was built about 1855, and is a two-story, single-pile, three-bay vernacular Greek Revival style frame dwelling. It has a one-story rear ell and a one-story shed roofed rear porch. Its builder James Graham also built the Robert Knox House and the Hall Family House. Other contributing resources are the cow barn, smokehouse, granary, double crib log barn, well house, log corn crib / barn, carriage house, school, Edward W. Barber House (1870s), Edward W. Barber Well House (1870s), North Carolina Midland Railroad Right-of-Way, and the agricultural landscape.
Shuping's Mill Complex was a historic grist mill complex located near Faith, Rowan County, North Carolina. The complex included a two-story frame dwelling, flour and corn mill building, cotton gin house (1895), and two other contributing buildings. The mill was built in 1900, and was a 2 1/2-story frame building sheathed n weatherboard and on a stone foundation. It was destroyed in 1986 when a car crash sparked a fire. The original boiler still remains on the property.
Carson-Andrews Mill and Ben F.W. Andrews House, also known as Andrews Mill, is a historic home and grist mill located near Washburn, Rutherford County, North Carolina. The Carson-Andrews Mill was built between about 1830 and 1835, and is a two-story-with-attic heavy timber frame grist mill. Operation of the mill ceased in the early 1930s. The Ben F. W. Andrews House was built between about 1904 and 1908, and is a two-story, Colonial Revival style frame dwelling with a one-story rear ell. It features a pedimented, two-tier center-bay porch with one-story wraparound sections. Other contributing resources are the landscaped grounds, water wheel and stone mount (1897), flower house, and privy.
Purefoy–Dunn Plantation is a historic plantation and national historic district located near Wake Forest, Wake County, North Carolina. The Greek Revival style plantation house was built about 1814 and remodeled about 1850. It is a two-story, L-shaped, heavy timber frame building. It has a low hipped roof and is sheathed in clapboards. The front portico was removed in the 1960s or early 1970s. Also on the property is a contributing mid-19th century gable-roofed frame smokehouse.
Museo Hacienda Buena Vista is a historic coffee plantation farm museum in Barrio Magueyes, Ponce, Puerto Rico. The museum opened in 1987, and receives some 40,000 visitors a year. The museum has been described as "Puerto Rico's first living museum of art and science."
Dunham's Mill, also known as Parry's Mill, is a historic building located at 7 Lower Center Street in Clinton, New Jersey, United States. The gristmill was in operation from 1837 to 1952. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 15, 1982, for its significance in commerce and industry. In 1995, it was also listed as a contributing property of the Clinton Historic District. It shares the Clinton Dam across the South Branch Raritan River with the David McKinney Mill on the other side of the river. Since 1952, it has been home to the Hunterdon Art Museum, described by an art critic as the "most charming and picturesque" museum in the state.
