RaceRoom Racing Experience is a free-to-play racing simulator for Microsoft Windows, developed by KW Studios (formerly known as SimBin Studios and Sector3 Studios) and published by RaceRoom Entertainment AG. Their aim is to provide an authentic racing experience through detailed car and track models as well as realistic car behaviour and sounds. The game provides a selection of free-to-play race cars and tracks to drive in multiplayer and single player games modes. Sponsored competitions and other free-to-play events allow users to use premium game content at no cost.

Gameplay

RaceRoom offers many different game modes such as Multiplayer Races, Custom Championships, Single Races against AI, Practice, Leaderboard Challenges and Online Competitions. The simulation also includes an online portal that keeps track of player statistics and leaderboard entries that serve as a platform for the players' activities.

The sim also supports Virtual Reality through Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Windows Mixed Reality.

Development

According to Sector3's Christopher Speed, RaceRoom is created and maintained by 10-11 people. [1] Since its release on February 12, 2013, RaceRoom has been updated regularly with new features and content and has received significant improvements in all departments. [2]

RaceRoom is built utilising Image Space Incorporated's [3] isiMotor2 racing simulation game engine. Unlike prior SimBin & Sector3 Studio releases, RaceRoom uses its own proprietary RendR graphics engine [4] which is capable of different times of day, features commonly used post-processing effects and has native support for rain (rain is not featured in Raceroom though). RaceRoom also features a custom audio engine [5] and is often cited as the benchmark sounding racing simulation on PC. [6] In a March 2016 interview with Inside Sim Racing, Sector 3's Jean-François Chardon stated that the original ISI code remaining in RaceRoom is "less than 20 percent". [7]

The same month Christopher Speed posted a thread on the official Sector3 Studios forums titled 'In response to the so-called 'leak'... that a 'very small team investigating and evaluating newer technologies for the future'. [8] Christopher Speed included an in-game screenshot of R3E running on Unreal Engine [9] of a BMW Z4 GT3 at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. In a 2017 interview with racing simulation website Race Department, [10] Christopher Speed revealed that RaceRoom would replace the RendR graphics engine with Unreal Engine 4 [11] [12] with RaceRoom's conversion to this engine aided by a partnership with SimBin Studios UK [13] who were utilising this engine for the canceled GTR 3 project. [14]

Sector3 Studios works with real racecar drivers, using feedback from Bruno Spengler, [15] Daniel Juncadella, [16] Kelvin van der Linde, [17] and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky [18] to fettle the simulation aspects of R3E such as vehicle physics and tyre modelling. Telemetry data derived from global partners such as DTM, WTCC, ADAC GT Masters and KW Suspensions [19] is also used to further develop the physics model of the cars.

The sim was used by the World Touring Car Cup for their 2020 Esports series due to the season being postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vehicles

There are 252 fully licensed cars available from 46 manufacturers, spanning from touring cars, GT cars, prototypes, GTO, open wheel, 4th generation Group 5 cars, sportcars, hillclimb and historic classes.

In 2022, a new car pack was added to emulate the 2021 DTM Championship. New car models introduced with the pack include the Ferrari 488 GT3 EVO 2020 and the McLaren 720S GT3. [20]

Tracks

The R3E track roster includes 60 tracks from all across the globe, including the entire DTM and ADAC GT Masters calendar, hillclimb tracks and a laser-scanned Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The total number of track layouts is 129.

Reception

Eurogamer reviewed RaceRoom in 2014 and called it "the best racing game you've never heard of". [21]

<i>GT Legends</i> 2005 video game

GT Legends is a sports car racing simulator for the PC developed by SimBin Studios and published by 10tacle Publishing. It is based on the 2005 FIA Historic Racing Championships for GTC and TC cars of the 1960s and 1970s. This is a modern-day championship for historic cars, and so the circuit designs in GT Legends are those of the modern era, contrasting with games such as Grand Prix Legends which are actually set in historic times.

KW Studios Ltd. is a Swedish video game developer and publisher founded in 2003 that develops racing simulators for Windows PC. The company has its headquarters in Lidköping, Sweden. The company originally started as a modding team for the Image Space Incorporated game F1 2002, releasing a mod based on the 2002 season of the FIA GT championship, essentially the precursor to its first commercial game.

<i>GTR 2 – FIA GT Racing Game</i> 2006 video game

GTR 2 – FIA GT Racing Game is a sports car racing simulator developed by Blimey! Games and SimBin Studios and published by 10tacle Publishing in 2006 for the x86 PC. The game is a sequel to GTR. Not only the game simulates the official 2003 and 2004 FIA GT Championship racing series, but also open practice, race weekend, championships, time trials, endurance race events and driving school, with more than 140 high detailed cars from the GT and NGT classes as well as 34 different track-layouts. Since its release in September 2006, the game has received widespread acclaim. Extending the physics engine from GTR, it features realistic physics including steering command by sensitivity, dynamic lighting, damage modeling and 3 different game modes.

Race is a racing simulator computer game based on the World Touring Car Championship released in November 2006. The game was developed and published by SimBin Studios, who had earlier produced critically acclaimed racing simulators like GTR and GT Legends, and distributed by Eidos in Europe and by Valve across their Steam network. The first expansion pack, Caterham Expansion was released in June 2007 featuring new cars and tracks.

KartKraft is a karting racing simulator game that emphasizes realistic physics. It was originally created by Australian independent developer Black Delta which in 2021 was acquired by Motorsport Games. After being in Early Access on the Steam store since November 2018, the game was officially released on January 26, 2022.
