History

Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering commenced its educational program in 2001 with three branches viz; ECE, CSE and It on a vast expanse of 30 acres of land in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu with the approval from AICTE and affiliation from Anna University, Chennai. [2]

RGCE is the first self-financing college in Tamil Nadu to introduce BE (Biomedical Engineering) in the year 2002 and the first in introducing B.Tech (Petroleum Engineering) in South India, with technical support from ONGC and Aban Offshore Ltd. [3]

Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi 1991 assassination of the 6th Prime Minister of India

The assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, occurred as a result of a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, India on 21 May 1991. At least 14 others, in addition to Rajiv Gandhi, were killed. It was carried out by Thenmozhi Rajaratnam, a member of the Sri Lankan Tamil separatist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). At the time, India had just ended its involvement, through the Indian Peace Keeping Force, in the Sri Lankan Civil War. Subsequent accusations of conspiracy have been addressed by two commissions of inquiry and have brought down at least one national government.

1991 Indian general election in Tamil Nadu

The 1991 Indian general election polls in Tamil Nadu were held for 39 seats in the state. The result was a repeat landslide victory for Indian National Congress, and its ally All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, winning all 39 seats. The opposition party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which was part of the National Front, lost heavily, not winning a single seat. During this election, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated, when campaigning for Margatham Chandrasekar for the Indian National Congress, in the Sriperumbudur constituency.

Aladi Aruna (alias) V Arunachalam was an Indian politician .He was the Law Minister of Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly as a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam from Alangulam constituency in 1967, 1971 elections and 1996 elections. He was elected to the Lok Sabha the lower house of India's Parliament from Tirunelveli constituency in the 1977 elections. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha the upper house of India's Parliament as a member of the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He came into limelight when he issued dissent note in the JPC report on the Bofors Scandal against a clean chit to Rajiv Gandhi government. He was murdered in 2004.

D. Pandian Indian politician

David Pandian was an Indian politician who served as Member of Parliament elected from Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Lok Sabha as an Indian National Congress–United Communist Party of India (UCPI) candidate from North Chennai constituency in 1989 and 1991 elections. He was the Tamil Nadu State Secretary of the Communist Party of India for nearly six years till 2015 when he was succeeded by R. Mutharasan.

Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development

The Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD), Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, is an Institution of National Importance by the Act of Parliament No. 35/2012 under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. The RGNIYD was set up in 1993 under the Societies Registration Act, XXVII of 1975.

Padmanabha murder case was a sensational case during the earlier part of 1990 in Madras in Tamil Nadu, (India) and Sri Lanka. Padmanabha was the leader of EPRLF and he was murdered with 12 of his party men and two commoners in Madras, the capital of Tamil Nadu on 19 June 1990. The incident marked the first occasion when the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eezham (LTTE), a militant organization, targeted an attack outside Sri Lanka.
