Ramakrishna Mission Shilpavidyala (Ramakrishna Mission Shilpayatana) (RKMS) is a private Industrial Training Institute and (Govt. Aided) HS Vocational. It has four I.T.I. trade courses - electrician, fitter, turner and welder (gas & electric) - under Craftsman Training Scheme (C.T.S.) affiliated to National Council for Vocational Training (N.C.V.T), New Delhi and HS Vocational for the trade Electrical and Computer which is affiliated to W.B. State Council of Technical and Vocational Education and Skill Development (WBSTC & VE & SD). It was established in sector one 1921,sector two 1963 as a Government Sponsored Junior Technical School, during the birth centenary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda. Swamiji is the greatest and most remarkable philosopher sage and karma yogi one comes across in modern India, who sailed to the United States in 1893 to find means for the material development of the masses of India. He represented Hinduism at the Chicago Parliament of Religions. This institution has been nurtured with Swami Vivekananda's ideas to help build a bridge for the masses, especially in rural India, to connect to modern industry. Hundreds of youth who would otherwise have had no scope to go in for higher education have been trained by us in skills and are gainfully employed in various well-known industries. It is located in Belur Math, P.O. Belur Math, D.T. Howrah, Pin- 711202, Belur, West Bengal. [1]

Special note

W.e.f. August 2019 session, as per DGT order, Ramakrishna Mission Shilpayatana is now merged into Ramakrishna Mission Shilpavidyalaya Belurmath. All trades affiliated to Shilpayatana will be conducted under the name Shilpavidyalaya. Location of the campus is also unchanged.

History

In the Second Meeting of Ramakrishna Mission Association at Calcutta on 5 May 1897 presided by Swami Vivekananda, the following two were included while stating the objectives of the Mission: [2] i) to train men so as to make them competent to teach such knowledge and sciences as are conductive to the material and spiritual welfare of the masses. ii) to promote and encourage arts and industries.

A one-hour written test (medium is English/Bengali) is conducted for a total of 50 marks based on Maths, Physics, Chemistry and English of the entry qualification level. Shortlisted candidates are called for interview before the finalizing of the list of selected candidates. Forms will be available after the publication of the West Bengal Class X (Madhyamik) Results around May–June.

Golden Jubilee

Ramakrishna Mission Shilpavidyala (Ramakrishna Mission Shilpayatana) celebrated a Golden Jubilee Ceremony on 23 February 2014. [5]

Thanks to all students and ex-students, Instructors and ex-Instructors, and well-wishers of Shilpayatana who attended the Golden Jubilee Inaugural Function in Vivekananda Sabhagriha at Belur Math campus at 3.30 p.m. We were blessed by the holy presence of Srimat Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, Vice-President of Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission, and also Srimat Swami Sarvadevanandaji and Srimat Swami Girishanandaji, all of whom were intimately connected with Shilpayatana during these five decades!

Ramakrishna Mission (RKM) is a Hindu religious and spiritual organisation which forms the core of a worldwide spiritual movement known as the Ramakrishna Movement or the Vedanta Movement. The mission is named after and inspired by the Indian spiritual Guru Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and founded by Ramakrishna's chief disciple Swami Vivekananda on 1 May 1897. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Shuddhananda</span>

Shuddhananda who was the fifth president of the Ramakrishna Order, was a direct monastic disciple of Vivekananda. He joined the Ramakrishna Math in 1897. He became a trustee of Ramakrishna Math and a member of the governing body of Ramakrishna Mission in May 1903. He also took up the editorship of the Bengali magazine called Udbodhan for sometime. He was appointed as the secretary of the math and the mission in 1927 and as the vice president in 1937. In 1938, he became the president of the order. His tenure was short, as he died in 1938. He is renowned in the literary circles to have translated most of Vivekananda's original works from English to Bengali.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Swami Virajananda</span>

Swami Virajananda, born Kalikrishna Bose, was an initiated disciple of Sarada Devi and the sixth president of the Ramakrishna Order. Born as the son of Trailokyanath Bose and Nishadkalidevi, Virajananda was the first person to join the Ramakrishna Order after the direct disciples of Ramakrishna. In 1897, he was initiated into sannyasa by Vivekananda. From 1899 onward he served in Advaita Ashrama, Mayavati and became its president in 1906. He is recognised as a monastic disciple of Vivekananda.

Belur Math is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, founded by Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. It is located on the west bank of Hooghly River, Belur, West Bengal, India. The temple is the heart of the Ramakrishna movement. It is notable for its architecture that fuses Hindu, Islamic, Buddhist, and Christian art and motifs as a symbol of unity of all religions. In 2003, Belur Math railway station was also inaugurated which is dedicated to Belur Math Temple.

Belur is a neighbourhood in northern part of Howrah city in Howrah district, West Bengal, India. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Ramakrishna Mission Residential College (Autonomous), Narendrapur is an institute for pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is an autonomous college located in Narendrapur, Kolkata. The college was established in 1960 and is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. It is run by the Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Narendrapur. It is a residential boys-only college. Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute, formerly Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University or simply Vivekananda University, is a education institute deemed-to-be-university headquartered at Belur, West Bengal, with campuses spanning multiple states in India. Established with the idea of actualizing Swami Vivekananda's vision of education, the institute is administered by the Ramakrishna Mission. The university provides courses on subjects as varied as rural and tribal development, disability management and special education, fundamental science education and Indian cultural and spiritual heritage.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Baburam Maharaj (Swami Premananda)</span>

Baburam Maharaj was a direct disciple of Ramakrishna, the 19th-century saint and mystic from Bengal, India. He was born in Antpur in the Hoogly district of Bengal in the year 1861. Baburam, as he was called in his pre monastic days, was also related to Balaram Bose, a leading householder disciple of Ramakrishna. He was given the name of Premananda or "joy of divine love" by his brother disciple Vivekananda. He had a notable contribution during the initial days of Ramakrishna Mission as he managed the whole affairs of Belur Math from 1902 to 1916. He also mentored young spiritual aspirants.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Josephine MacLeod</span> American devotee of Swami Vivekananda

Josephine MacLeod was an American friend and devotee of Swami Vivekananda. She had a strong attachment to India and was an active participant in the Ramakrishna Vivekananda movement. She was given the nicknames "Tantine" and "Jo Jo" by Vivekananda. She considered Swami Vivekananda to be her friend and helped him with his finances. MacLeod was not a sanyasin, unlike many others such as Sister Nivedita or Sister Christine. She was instrumental in spreading Vivekananda's message on Vedanta in the West. She made many contributions to the initial and the later phases of the development of the order of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda. She was a contributor to many causes espoused by Sister Nivedita, the most famous disciple of Vivekananda, including that of contributing financially towards the development of the Indian National Movement especially in Bengal and elsewhere in India.

Baranagore Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama High School (H.S.) is a senior secondary boys' school in the district North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, India. The school was founded in 1912, and is located at the northern outskirt of Kolkata, on the banks of the river Ganges (Hoogly). The school is run by the Baranagar Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama Authority under the guidance of Ramakrishna Mission at Belur Math. Sri Ramakrishna Math, Lucknow is a monastic organisation for men created by Ramakrishna (1836–1886), a 19th-century saint of Bengal.
