Ray Tracers [a] is a 1997 vehicular combat video game developed by Taito and released for the PlayStation console. THQ published the title for its North American release in 1998. Ray Tracers has been compared to Taito's own Chase H.Q. from 1988. [3] [4] It was re-released on the PlayStation Network.

Gameplay consists of driving a car along a street. There is a timer on the top-left, which counts down. Enemies, in the form of robots, appear from the front and are damaged by ramming. Killing an enemy extends the player's time.

Ray Tracers received mixed reviews. While multiple critics praised the tight controls, [7] [12] [14] strong sense of speed, [6] [7] [10] [12] high frame rate, [10] [12] [14] and light sourcing effects, [6] [10] they almost unanimously concluded that the game is both excessively easy and excessively short, giving players no reason to buy it since they could easily finish it on a single rental and the replay value is minimal. [6] [7] [10] [14] Computer and Video Games lamented, "Fun though Ray Tracers is, there's just not enough to it. A real shame." [6] Some also commented that the gameplay is too simplistic, to the point where it becomes monotonous even before one finishes the game. [7] [12] [14] GamePro remarked that a multiplayer mode could have greatly increased Ray Tracer's lasting appeal, but without it the game became monotonous quickly. [14] IGN was among the few publications to defend the game; while concurring that the gameplay is extremely simplistic, the reviewer felt that it was fun enough that players would enjoy popping it in now and then for casual gaming sessions despite its lack of concrete replay value. The review team of Electronic Gaming Monthly were particularly negative about the game, with Kelly Rickards calling it "the most simplistic, monotonous and boring racing game I've played in quite some time", Dan Hsu saying he completed it in 20 minutes, and Crispin Boyer lamenting its lack of personality and the easiness of defeating the bosses. [7] Both Boyer and Jeff Gerstmann (in a review for GameSpot ) criticized the absurdity of the fighter jet and helicopter bosses, pointing out that there was no apparent reason for them to hug the road closely enough that the player car would ever have the opportunity to ram them. [7] [10] Game Informer gave it a favourable review. [9] In Germany, MAN!AC praised the anime inspired graphics and called the racing exciting. [4] In Japan, Famitsu gave it a score of 23 out of 40. Robotron 64 is a 1998 multidirectional shooter for the Nintendo 64. It is a port of Robotron X, which itself is an updated version of the 1982 dual-stick shooter Robotron: 2084. The game was originally scheduled to be released by Midway Games in the summer of 1997, but the game was put on hiatus before it would see a new publisher and a release date of January 5, 1998.
Fighters Destiny, known in Japan as Fighting Cup, is a 1998 video game developed by Genki alongside Opus Corp for the Nintendo 64. It closely models the 3D fighting game standard set by Sega's Virtua Fighter, but integrates a unique point scoring system. The game's generic characters and unoriginal presentation have been panned by critics, but reviewers praised its point system and consider it to be one of the best fighting games on the Nintendo 64. It was followed by a 2000 sequel Fighter Destiny 2.
Rage Racer is a racing video game developed and published by Namco for the PlayStation. It is the fifth installment in the Ridge Racer series and the third on the PlayStation following Ridge Racer Revolution (1995). It was released in Japan on December 3, 1996, with releases elsewhere following in 1997. It was the first game in the series to feature a CGI animated introduction, and introduced a new "mascot", Reiko Nagase.
Skullmonkeys is a platform video game developed by The Neverhood, Inc. and published by Electronic Arts for PlayStation. It is the sequel to The Neverhood, and rather than being an adventure game, it is a platformer. Players again take control of Klaymen, who this time must defeat a horde of creatures called Skullmonkeys under the command of his old foe Klogg.
RayStorm is a 1996 vertically scrolling shooter arcade video game developed and published by Taito. It has been ported to several consoles, including the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Xbox 360. Players control a starship, the R-Gray, in its mission to destroy the Secilia Federation before it destroys Earth.
Nagano Winter Olympics '98, known in Japan as Hyper Olympics in Nagano, is a multi-event sports game from Konami. It is based on the 1998 Winter Olympics and features 10 Olympic events including skating, skiing, luge, bobsleigh, slalom, curling, halfpipe and snowboarding. The game is part of the Track & Field/Hyper Sports series and would be the last licensed Olympic video game released on a Nintendo home console until Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games about nine years later.

Mass Destruction is a 1997 third-person action game developed by NMS Software and published by ASC Games and BMG Interactive. Released for MS-DOS, the Sega Saturn, and the PlayStation, the game puts players in control of a tank, and tasks them with destroying enemy forces. It has often been likened to Return Fire.

It was published by Midway Games and GT Interactive. Originally announced under the title "Hardwood Heroes", the game was released with minimal changes as NBA Action 98 on Sega Saturn and Microsoft Windows, published by Sega. Another version was being developed by Z-Axis for the Nintendo 64 under the title "NBA Fast Break 64", with a prospective November 1997 release, but it was cancelled.
Lode Runner is a video game developed by Presage and published by Natsume Inc. for the PlayStation in 1998. It is a compilation game combining ports of Lode Runner: The Legend Returns (1994) and the Japan-exclusive Lode Runner Extra (1997).
Judge Dredd is a 1997 light gun shooter video game developed by Gremlin Interactive. Though it came out just a couple years after the Judge Dredd film, the game is actually based on the comic book of the same name. It was published by Acclaim Entertainment for the arcades, and for the PlayStation by Gremlin Interactive in Europe and Activision in North America, respectively. The PlayStation emulated version was re-released by Urbanscan for the PlayStation Network on 24 January 2008. The game met with overwhelmingly negative reviews, with criticism directly at its unintelligent and unfairly difficult design and its unreliable targeting cursor.
NFL Blitz is an American football video game developed and published by Midway for the arcade in 1997, the first game in the NFL Blitz series. The development team was headed by Mark Turmell and Sal Divita, who were known for being behind NBA Jam, and NFL Blitz was a deliberate attempt to translate the exaggerated arcade-style approach of NBA Jam to the football realm. The game was ported to the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Windows, and Game Boy Color in 1998. The cover athlete for the game was then Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart.

NHL Powerplay 98 is a sports video game developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Virgin Interactive and Sega for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation, and Sega Saturn in 1997. It is the sequel to NHL Powerplay '96; there was no "'97" entry in the NHL Powerplay series. After Virgin opted not to release the game for the Sega Saturn, Sega acquired the rights and published the Saturn version under the title NHL All-Star Hockey 98 so as to make it a continuation of Sega's own NHL All-Star Hockey series.
Fisherman's Bait: A Bass Challenge, also known as simply Fisherman's Bait and in Japan as Exciting Bass, is a fishing video game developed and published by Konami for the arcades in 1998. It was later ported to the PlayStation in 1999.
