The Revolutionary Rivalry is a rivalry between the George Mason Patriots and George Washington Revolutionaries, both of which play in the Atlantic 10 Conference and are located in the Washington metropolitan area. Both schools are named after founding fathers, George Mason and George Washington, who were both natives to Virginia and had their plantations, Gunston Hall and Mount Vernon, respectively, on the southside of modern Fairfax County, Virginia.

The rivalry is balanced in terms of total wins between each school across all sports. George Washington, though, has historically dominated the series in men's and women's basketball, while George Mason has dominated the series in baseball and men's and women's soccer.

History

The formal rivalry, with the title, "Revolutionary Rivalry" is rooted ahead of the 2013–14 academic school year, [1] [2] when George Mason University left the Colonial Athletic Association to join the Atlantic 10 Conference, as part of the 2010–2014 NCAA conference realignment. [3] Before then, both institutions regularly played non-conference matches against each other due to relative proximity of the schools (separated by 20 miles). [4]

Historically, most of the rivalry, even prior to the Patriots joining the A-10 was fixed on basketball, which has historically favored the Revolutionaries. [5] [6] [7] However, with both schools being part of the Atlantic 10, the rivalry was formally given a title, and spanned across all sports. [8]

Series results

The formal rivalry began during the 2013-14 season when Mason joined the Atlantic 10 Conference. [1]

The point system is that there is one point awarded per win, and split half a point if it ends in a tie in head-to-head team sports. This includes soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis and lacrosse. In baseball and softball, a point is awarded to whichever team wins the series, since these sports are played in three-game series over the course of the regular season. In individual, non head-to-head sports, a point is awarded to the team that finishes higher in the Atlantic 10 championship. These sports are cross country, swimming, golf and rowing. [2]

Tajama Abraham Ngongba is a former professional basketball player in the Women's National Basketball Association. Abraham attended George Washington University and was the 31st draft pick in the 1997 WNBA draft. She played for Sacramento Monarchs in 1997 and Detroit Shock in 1998. Abraham took a position as the women's Assistant Coach of basketball at George Mason University in 2013.

The 2017–18 George Washington Colonials women's basketball team will represent George Washington University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Colonials, led by second year head coach Jennifer Rizzotti, play their home games at Charles E. Smith Center and were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. They finished the season 19–14, 10–6 in A-10 play to finish in a tie for fifth place. They won the A-10 tournament by defeating Saint Joseph's and received an automatic bid to the NCAA women's tournament where they lost to Ohio State in the first round.

The 2022–23 George Mason Patriots Men's basketball team represented George Mason University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The season was the 57th for the program, the second under head coach Kim English, and the tenth as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference (A-10). The Patriots played their home games at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. They finished the season 20–13, 11–7 in A-10 play, to finish in fifth place. This was the first season since 2017 that the Patriots finished the season with at least 20 wins. They defeated Richmond in the second round of the A-10 tournament before losing to Saint Louis.

The 2022–23 George Washington Colonials men's basketball team represented George Washington University during the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by first-year head coach Chris Caputo, and played their home games at Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C. as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
