Rhythm Unplugged is a music concert in West Africa. [1] CEO of the Flytime Group, Cecil Hammond, organised the first concert in 2004. [2] The annual concert is organised by Flytime Promotions, a subsidiary of the Flytime Group. [3]

The 2011 Lagos edition of Rhythm Unplugged unveiled artists including Wizkid, Olamide, Davido, Tiwa Savage and Seyi Shay. [4]

Rhythm Unplugged concerts featured dialoguing co-hosts, notably, co-hosts Julius Agwu and Okey Bakassi, who hosted several Flytime Promotions events in the early years. [5] Rhythm Unplugged also pioneered the extensive artist line-up for single concert events in Nigeria. [6]

History

Rhythm Unplugged was first organised by Cecil Hammond in 2004 via his company Flytime Promotions. [2] The entertainment event was designed to promote Nigerian musicians and comedians at a time when the Nigerian music industry was just gaining recognition on the international music scene. [7]

Conception

The first Rhythm Unplugged concert was held in 2004 at Fantasyland in Ikoyi, Lagos and tickets sold out. [4]

Following the success of the first Rhythm Unplugged concert, Flytime Promotions announced that it would host the concert annually at a larger venue in order to accommodate the growing fan base. In years since, Rhythm Unplugged has been hosted at the Federal Palace Hotel, the Ocean View and, most recently, at the Eko Convention Center all in Victoria Island, Lagos. [8]

Locations

The concerts have taken place in multiple cities across Nigeria, including Benin, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Jos, and Ibadan. [2] There have been over 40 editions of Rhythm Unplugged since 2004 in various cities, however, the primary concert is still held in Lagos, at the Eko Convention center. [2]

In 2010, Rhythm Unplugged was hosted in Benin City. It was the first Rhythm Unplugged concert hosted outside of Lagos. [9]

In 2011 a Rhythm Unplugged concert was held in Abuja. [10]

In 2012, two Rhythm Unplugged concerts were held outside Lagos. The first concert was held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and featured the popular singer from Rivers State, Duncan Mighty. [11] The second concert was held in Ibadan, Oyo State and featured performances from Wizkid, Davido, 2Baba and Olamide. [12]

In 2013, Rhythm Unplugged was held in Lagos and featured major international and domestic acts including  Wyclef, P-Square, Burna Boy and Olamide. [13] This edition of the concert was sponsored by Harp Lager and was branded Harp Rhythm Unplugged. [13]

The 2014 edition of Rhythm Unplugged marked its 10th anniversary and featured P-Square, Davido, Mavin All Stars, Olamide, MI, Patoranking, Waje, Yemi Alade, Seyi Shay, Skales, Runtown, Bovi, Julius Agwu, Okey Bakassi, I Go Dye and Akpororo. [14] It was Flytime Promotions' largest and most well-attended Rhythm Unplugged.

Also, in 2014, Pepsi became the major corporate sponsor of Rhythm Unplugged, and the concert was correspondingly named Pepsi Rhythm Unplugged. [15] Pepsi remains the concert's major corporate sponsor, and subsequent editions of Rhythm Unplugged maintain the Pepsi prefix.

The 2015 edition of Rhythm Unplugged was hosted in Lagos and featured the American Musician, Trey Songz, as the headline act. [16]

Seyi Shay, Falz, Olamide, Omawumi, Kiss Daniel, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks, Koker, DJ Obi, DJ Exclusive, and Cobhams performed at the 2016 edition of Rhythm Unplugged held in Lagos. [17]

In 2017 Rhythm Unplugged was held as part of a two-day Music and Comedy festival. [18] The first day of the concert hosted the Rhythm Unplugged Concert, which featured performances by Big Shaq, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Wande Coal, Simi, Runtown, Olamide, Ycee, Niniola, Small Doctor, Mayokun, 9ice, Nonso Amadi. [18]

The second day of the concert hosted Wizkid The Concert. [19] Davido made an appearance during this concert and, for the first time, Davido and Wizkid performed together. By sharing a stage, the two artists signaled an end to a year-long feud. [19]

The 2018 edition of Rhythm Unplugged was held as part of a three-day long music festival names Flytime Festival. Rhythm Unplugged was featured on the first day of the festival, and was headlined by Davido, Tiwa Savage, D'Banj, Burna Boy, Duncan Mighty and DJ Cuppy. [7]

The 2019 edition of Rhythm Unplugged was a toast to the 15th year Anniversary of outstanding and exceptional concert by Flytime. [20] It was a five day concert that kicked off on the 20th of December and featured potential musical artist and DJ. Some of the artist in attendant were; Olamide, MI, Ycee, Patoranking, Mayorkun, Teni, Zlatan, Joeboy, Fireboy, B Red, Tolani, Jeff Akoh, Oluwadamilola, DJ Neptune, DJ Consequence, DJ Obi, DJ Cuppy and many others as Burna Boy starts the show on the 20th. The venue remains Eko-Convention center, Victoria Island. Lagos. [21] [22]

The 2022 edition of Rhythm Unplugged took place on December 21st at Eko Convention Center, and it was a collaboration between Flytime Promotions and Pepsi. An event featuring a slew of artists. Craig David, a 41-year-old British singer-songwriter, joined Wande Coal, Reekado Banks, Fave, Pheelz, BNXN, Zinoleesky, and others on stage. [23]

A prominent figure in the modern-day afrobeats music scene, Wizkid is regarded as one of the biggest and most influential African artists of all time. Olamide Gbenga Adedeji is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record executive. One of the most influential artists in Africa, he has been instrumental to the launching of the careers of several Afrobeats music stars. He records in Yoruba and English. In 2011, he released his debut studio album Rapsodi while signed to Coded Tunes. YBNL, his follow-up album, was released under his label imprint "Yahoo Boy No Laptop," aka YBNL Nation. The album was supported by the singles "First of All," "Voice of the Street," "Stupid Love," and "Ilefo Illuminati." On 7 November 2013, he released his third studio album Baddest Guy Ever Liveth. The album's singles include "Durosoke" and "Yemi My Lover." On 17 July 2013, Olamide became the first Nigerian to sign an endorsement deal with Cîroc.

The Headies is a music awards show established in 2006 by the Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria to recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry. The annual ceremony features performances by established and promising artists. It is broadcast live on HipTV to viewers across Nigeria. The first and second editions of The Headies were held at the Muson Center in Onikan, Lagos State. Between 2010 and 2012, the awards were held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. Several media personalities in Nigeria have hosted the annual ceremony, including Darey Art Alade, D'banj, Dakore Egbuson, Banky W., Rita Dominic, M.I, Tiwa Savage and Dr SID.

Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua, known professionally as Seyi Shay, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress. In 2008, she became the lead singer for the now defunct pop girl group From Above. The group signed a recording deal with Sony's Columbia Records and was managed by Mathew Knowles' Music World Entertainment company. In November 2013, Shay signed an endorsement deal with telecommunications service provider Etisalat. In July 2015, she signed a record deal with Island Records. In 2015, she signed a two-year endorsement deal with Pepsi. Shay released her debut studio album Seyi or Shay in November 2015. It was supported by the promotional singles "Irawo", "Ragga Ragga", "Right Now" and "Murda", featuring Patoranking and Shaydee. In January 2021, she signed a publishing deal with the French division of Universal Music Publishing Group

The 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards took place on 31 August 2014, at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The eligibility period was from March 2013 to March 2014. In April 2014, the NEA reviewing committee began collecting submissions for the 2014 edition. The deadline for submission was April 30, 2014, and the nominations were announced on May 29, 2014. Tiwa Savage and Davido received the most nominations with 5 each. Don Jazzy, Flavour N'abania and Wizkid all got four nominations each, while Olamide, Patoranking, Chidinma and Oritse Femi followed closely with three nominations.

The Headies 2014 was the ninth edition of The Headies. It took place on 14 December 2014, at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. Themed "Feel the Passion", the show was hosted by Toke Makinwa and Basketmouth. It was initially scheduled to hold on 25 October 2014. Bovi was initially announced as one of the hosts, but ended up not hosting due to him being booked for another show. On 30 September 2014, nominations were announced during a press briefing at the HipTV office in Allen, Lagos. Kcee, Olamide and Phyno led the nominations with five each. Tiwa Savage, Oritse Femi and The Mavins followed closely with four apiece. Yemi Alade was nominated for Song of the Year, Best Pop Single and Next Rated. Olamide, Patoranking and Davido each took home two awards apiece. Don Jazzy won the Producer of the Year plaque, while Sir Victor Uwaifo got the Hall of Fame recognition.

The Gidi Culture Festival is an annual one-day music and arts festival that takes place in Lagos, Nigeria. Co-founded by Chinedu Okeke and Oriteme Banigo, it was created in response to a demand from the local youth culture for live, affordable, and accessible entertainment in Africa. The festival provides a venue for live bands, DJs, and musical acts to perform. It also features outdoor activities, local vendors, and artisans. The main show features a line-up of African acts from numerous countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Congo, Kenya, and the United Kingdom. The goal of the festival is to encourage the development of African talent and promote artists both within the continent and into overseas markets.

Oluseye Desmond Sodamola, professionally known as Spinall, is a Nigerian disc jockey, record producer, and songwriter. He was the official DJ to Wande Coal while he was affiliated with Mavin Records. He created a style edge to his outfit known as TheCAP, tracing his roots back to his culture.

The 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards was the 10th edition of the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. Wizkid won the most awards while Olamide received the most nominations with three across 39 award categories. Kiss Daniel won the Best New Act to Watch award while Praiz won the Best R&B Act award after he toppled the likes of Banky W, Chidinma, Seyi Shay, Timi Dakolo and Shaydee. The award was held at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, New York City, U.S.A and was hosted by Osas Ighodaro and Ice Prince.

Folarin Falana, better known by his stage name Falz, is a Nigerian rapper, songwriter and actor who began his career while in secondary school after forming a group called The School Boys with his friend before his professional career as a music artist began in 2009. Falz became more well-known after releasing the song "Marry Me" featuring vocals from Poe and Yemi Alade.

Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf, popularly known by his stage name CDQ, is a Nigerian indigenous hip-hop rapper and songwriter best known for his single "Nowo E Soke" featuring Wizkid and Masterkraft's Indomie where he was featured alongside Olamide. While the former is instrumental for launching his career into the Nigerian music industry, the later won him his first career award at the 2016 Nigerian Music Video Awards. Signed to his label No Struggle No Success Entertainment, CDQ's repertoire of music includes rapping in Yoruba language with addition of ad-libs such as the popular "Woss Wobi" which he invented.

Ayoola Oladapo Agboola also known as KDDO is a Nigerian record producer, songwriter, and artist. He's best known for producing and writing "Under The Influence" by Chris Brown, charting at number 1 on the Billboard Rhythmic Chart & number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition KDDO wrote and produced Afrobeats longest charting Billboard single "Fall" by Davido, renowned for breaking Afrobeat Music globally. The song peaked on US R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart at number 13 and US Hot R&B Songs chart at number 25 on Billboard. KDDO is the first Afrobeats producer in history to be certified by the Recording Industry Association of America, after Fall became a certified gold record in the US. He is currently managed by Christian McCurdy & Rehan Manickam at LEGION Management.

Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, known professionally as Mayorkun, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and pianist. He released a cover of Davido's "The Money" single and was discovered by the singer on Twitter. Mayorkun was signed to Davido's record label DMW from 2016 to 2021; his debut single "Eleko" was released under the label. Mayorkun released his debut studio album The Mayor of Lagos in November 2018. After his exit from DMW in 2021; he released "Let Me Know" and his second studio album Back In Office in October 2021, under Sony Music West Africa division.

The Headies 2018 was the 12th edition of The Headies. It was held on May 5, 2018, at the Eko Convention Centre in Victoria Island, Lagos. Nigerian comedian Bovi and singer Seyi Shay hosted the ceremony. After shortlisting thousands of entries submitted during the eligibility period, the organizers of the ceremony announced the nominees in April 2018. They also announced the addition of three categories: Viewer's Choice, Best Performer, and Industry Brand Supporter. Simi led the nominations with 7, followed by Wizkid and Davido with 6 each. The ceremony featured performances from a number of artists, including Falz, Mr Real, Simi, and the Danfo Drivers. Pulse Nigeria praised the award's sound production and stage design. Davido, Wizkid and Simi won the most awards with 3 each. Mayorkun won the Next Rated award, beating Dice Ailes, Maleek Berry and Johnny Drille.

Ayorinde Kehinde Okiki, known professionally as DJ Kaywise is a Nigerian disc jockey and record producer. Kaywise broke into the mixtape market in Alaba in the year 2010. He has since gained prominence as a DJ in Nigeria and has released chart topping songs with many Nigerian music stars.

Bolaji Odojukan, better known by his stage name BOJ is an English-Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer. He is one-third of the musical group DRB LasGidi with TeeZee and Fresh L, and is known as a pioneer of alté.

The Livespot X Festival is a music concert that launched in 2019 with its maiden edition in Lagos, Nigeria and Accra, Ghana organized by Livespot360.
