Rivne Nuclear Power Plant (also called Rovno [1] ) is a nuclear plant in Ukraine in Rivne Oblast, which operates the first VVER-440 reactors to be constructed in Ukraine.
The Regulatory Committee of Ukraine, during a meeting in Varash, adopted а decision оn extending the lifetime of Rivne power units 1 and 2 bу 20 years. [2]
The power station has four reactors with a nameplate capacity of just over 2500 MWe. In 2018 unit 3, after modernization, received a life-extension license extending its operation by 20 years until 2037. [3]
The plant dates back to 1971, when the design of the West Ukrainian NPP, which was later renamed Rivne NPP, began.[ citation needed ]
Construction of the plant began in 1973. The first two power units with VVER-440 reactors were commissioned in 1980–1981, and the 3rd power unit, the millionth unit, was commissioned in 1986.[ citation needed ]
Since 1991, it has been guarded by the 5th NPP Protection Battalion.
Construction resumed in 1993 after the moratorium was lifted. A survey of Unit 4 was conducted, a program for its modernization was prepared, and a dossier for the construction completion project was prepared. Public hearings on this issue were also held. On October 10, 2004, Rivne NPP Unit 4 was put into operation. The reactor installation of the new Rivne NPP unit belongs to the modern series (VVER-1000).[ citation needed ]
In recent years, RNPP has been generating about 11–12 billion kWh of electricity, which is 16% of the production at nuclear power plants. On July 2, 2018, it was announced that preparations for the construction of power unit No. 5 were underway.[ citation needed ]
In early December 2018, a special train was demonstrated on the territory of the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant to transport waste to the repository. The HI-TRAC 190 transshipment container was tested. After loading, the container will be transported from the Rivne NPP to the storage facility in the Chornobyl zone. The container is 3 meters long and weighs 84 tons. The container will be transported from the station to the storage facility on a special railroad platform built specifically for this purpose. It will be protected from accidental collisions by a "softening" car, and the train itself will be under the control of paramilitary guards.[ citation needed ]
In early February 2019, it became known that the plant's engineers had increased the capacity of Unit 3 by 10 MW. [4]
On December 27, 2019, the radioactive waste treatment plant (RWTP) was launched at the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant. [5]
On the night of December 12, 2020, power unit No. 1 was automatically shut down. According to the announced data, the shutdown occurred as a result of the automatic protection system response due to the shutdown of one of the unit's turbines. [6]
In December 2020, the Technical Center for Automated Remote Metal Inspection was put into operation. [7]
During the massive missile attack on Ukraine on November 15, 2022, the NPP lost connection with one of the 750 kV power lines. The plant's power had to be reduced, and one of the four units was automatically shut down. [8]
On July 1, 2023, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Rivne NPP and held a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. [9]
On October 30, 2023, according to a report by the Ministry of Energy, the IAEA completed an unannounced inspection at the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant. The inspection was conducted by IAEA inspectors with the participation of an inspector from the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine to verify the absence of undeclared nuclear materials. State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, also known as Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation,, or Rosatom State Corporation, is a Russian state corporation headquartered in Moscow that specializes in nuclear energy, nuclear non-energy goods and high-tech products. It was established in 2007 and comprises more than 350 enterprises, including scientific research organizations, a nuclear weapons complex, and the world's only nuclear icebreaker fleet.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in southeastern Ukraine is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and among the 10 largest in the world. It has been under Russian control since 2022. It was built by the Soviet Union near the city of Enerhodar, on the southern shore of the Kakhovka Reservoir on the Dnieper river. From 1996 to 2022, it was operated by Energoatom, which operates Ukraine's other three nuclear power stations.
The Kola Nuclear Power Plant, also known as Kolsk NPP or Kolskaya NPP, is a nuclear power plant located 12 km away from Polyarnye Zori, Murmansk Oblast in north-western Russia. If the floating nuclear power plant Akademik Lomonosov is excluded, it is the northernmost nuclear power plant housed in a fixed location structure.
The water-water energetic reactor (WWER), or VVER is a series of pressurized water reactor designs originally developed in the Soviet Union, and now Russia, by OKB Gidropress. The idea of such a reactor was proposed at the Kurchatov Institute by Savely Moiseevich Feinberg. VVER were originally developed before the 1970s, and have been continually updated. They were one of the initial reactors developed by the USSR, the other being the infamous RBMK. As a result, the name VVER is associated with a wide variety of reactor designs spanning from generation I reactors to modern generation III+ reactor designs. Power output ranges from 70 to 1300 MWe, with designs of up to 1700 MWe in development. The first prototype VVER-210 was built at the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant.

It hosts the administration of Yuzhnoukrainsk urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: 38,560.
The Kursk Nuclear Power Plant is one of the three biggest nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Russia and one of the four biggest electricity producers in the country. It is located on the bank of the Seym River about 40 kilometers west of the city of Kursk, midway between it and the town of Lgov, in western Russia. The nearby city of Kurchatov was founded when construction of the plant began. The plant feeds the grid for Kursk Oblast and 19 other regions. As of 2024, the site houses two active reactors and two decommissioned older units. It also houses the partially built Kursk 5 and Kursk 6 units which had construction halted, and two new VVER designs are under construction.
The South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, also known as the Pivdennoukrainsk Nuclear Power Plant, is a nuclear power plant in Ukraine, near the city of Pivdennoukrainsk in Mykolaiv Oblast, about 350 kilometres (220 mi) south of Kyiv. It is the second largest of the country's five nuclear power stations. It is part of the South Ukrainian Energy Complex, along with the Tashlyk Pumped-Storage Power Plant and Oleksandrivska hydroelectric power station.
The Astravets Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power plant located in the Astravyets District, Grodno Region in north-western Belarus. The power plant is built close to the Belarus-Lithuania border, being 40 kilometres (25 mi) east of the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. The plant is powered by two 1194-MW VVER-1200 units supplied by Atomstroyexport, the nuclear equipment exporter branch of the Russian nuclear corporation Rosatom. The plant is owned by State Enterprise Belarusian NPP, which in turn is owned by the state-owned operator Belenergo.
Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant II is a Russian nuclear power plant with two 1200 MW pressurized water reactors (VVER) located in Voronezh Oblast. The power plant is built on the same site as the present Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant.
The Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant generates nuclear power in Ukraine. The plant is operated by Energoatom. Two VVER-1000 reactors are operational, each generating 1000 MW (net) of electricity, with two AP1000 reactors under construction.
Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power station in Russia. It is located in the Smolensk region, in Desnogorsk province, approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) from Smolensk, 115 kilometres (71 mi) from Bryansk and 320 kilometres (200 mi) from Moscow. Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant is the biggest power generating station in the north-western region of the united energy system of the Russian Federation. Chyhyryn Nuclear Power Station is an unfinished nuclear power plant located to the east of Chyhyryn in Ukraine, on the territory adjacent to the Kremenchuk Reservoir shore, between the villages Stetsivka and Vitove.
This is a list of all the commercial nuclear reactors in the European Union and in Europe, with operational status. On 4 March 2022, a military engagement took place between the Russian Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of Ukraine over the city of Enerhodar in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, on the southern front of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Enerhodar is the location of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which generates nearly half of the country's electricity derived from nuclear power and more than a fifth of total electricity generated in Ukraine, as well as a nearby thermal power station.
During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has become the center of an ongoing nuclear safety crisis, described by Ukraine as an act of nuclear terrorism by Russia.
The 5th Nuclear Power Plant Defense Battalion is a battalion of the National Guard of Ukraine tasked with CBRN defense, specifically of the Rivne Nuclear Power Plant, and has seen action against Russian forces during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In its current form, it was established in 1991 and is headquartered at Varash.
