The Roland Alpha Juno is a series of analog polyphonic synthesizers introduced by Roland Corporation in 1985. The Alpha Juno 1 and Alpha Juno 2 were released at the same time, and feature the same sound engine but with the latter boasting additional performance features. The Alpha Junos were a departure from their predecessor, the Roland Juno-106, as they replaced the dedicated controls with soft touch buttons and a single dial for programming sounds. [1] One of the factory presets, nicknamed a 'hoover sound', became a staple in jungle and rave music. [2]
In contrast to Roland's previous synthesizers, the Alpha Juno-1 and Alpha Juno-2 do not feature dedicated knobs or faders; editing is instead done with an 'Alpha dial', a continuously rotating control that selects and modifies parameters. Some parameters, such as modulation rate and depth, brilliance, and envelope time have dedicated selector buttons for quicker adjustments. To alter any of these settings during performance or programming, one presses the corresponding button and rotates the Alpha dial. [1] The continuously rotating dial is reminiscent of controls previously seen on the Moog Source and Synclavier. [1] [3]
The Juno-1 and Juno-2 synthesizers expand upon the oscillator choices previously seen in the Juno-106, including three pulse waves and five sawtooth waves, along with a sub-oscillator that offers six pulse wave options. [1] One of the pulse waves and one of the sawtooth waves can have their pulse width modulated using LFO or envelope control. [4]
The Alpha Juno synthesizers feature a multi-stage envelope design that includes eight parameters, encompassing four timing settings, three levels, and a key follow function. [4] A Yamaha DX7-style envelope chart is prominently displayed on the right-hand side of its control panel, which helps guide users through the complex envelope stages. [1] [5]
An integrated chorus effect on the Juno-1 and Juno-2 includes a programmable rate parameter, providing more options than the fixed dual-rate chorus found on the Juno-106. The Alpha Junos feature 64 factory presets as well as memory for 64 programmable user sounds. [1]
In 1985, Roland introduced two versions of the Alpha Juno series: the Alpha Juno 1 (JU-1) and the Alpha Juno 2 (JU-2). The JU-2 expanded on the JU-1 by offering an additional octave of keys, incorporating velocity sensitivity, aftertouch, and including a cartridge slot for patch storage. [1] [6] For the home market, Roland released the HS-10 as the equivalent of the Juno 1, and the HS-80 as the home market version of the Juno 2, both featuring a different colour scheme but sharing the same sound engine as their counterparts. [7]
The MKS-50 was released in 1987 and is a rack-mount version of the Alpha Juno. It has the same synth engine and architecture, with some added features like 16 programmable chord memories, and the ability to store velocity, volume, panning, de-tune, portamento and other similar parameters within each patch.
The optional Roland PG-300 programmer made every MIDI parameter editable with a dedicated slider or switch. It retailed for £200 and was compatible with the Alpha Juno 1, the Alpha Juno 2, the MKS-50, and the home market versions. [6] [7]
The Alpha Junos had little impact upon release and were overshadowed by Yamaha's dominance with its FM synthesizer range, with the shifting preference from traditional analog to digital and FM synthesis technologies placed the Alpha Juno at a disadvantage. [6]
A factory preset called "WhatThe" became popular in jungle and rave music, earning the moniker "Hoover sound" due to its distinctive pitch modulation effect. This preset was initially created by Roland sound designer Eric Persing as a joke. Early examples of the Hoover sound include "Dominator" by Human Resource, "Mentasm" by Second Phase and "Charly (Alley Cat Mix)" by The Prodigy, all released in 1991. [8] [9] Later uses of the Hoover sound include "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga and "Birthday Cake" by Rihanna. [10] [11]
In 2014, Audio Realism introduced Redominator, a software emulation of the Alpha Juno 2 that reads sysex presets from the original synths. [12] In 2024, TAL Software launched TAL-Pha, another software plugin emulating the MKS-50 rack version of the Alpha Juno 2, which is capable of reading and converting sysex data from the original Alpha Junos as well as functioning as a software controller for them. The Roland JX-3P is a synthesizer produced by Roland Corporation of Japan from 1983–1985. The "3P" in its name refers to "Programmable Preset Polyphonic". It is notable as one of the company's first synthesizers to incorporate a MIDI interface.
The Roland MC-303 is the first of a series of musical instruments known as a groovebox. It combines a simple sound module with a sequencer to record and store notation, along with controls aimed at encouraging the musician to improvise the music while it is playing. Despite the number in its name and the attention it received at its launch, the MC-303 has more in common with other MC prefixed synthesizers, which contain built-in sequencers, than it does with the famous Roland TB-303. As the first Groovebox, the MC-303 was the first in a line of inexpensive products specifically targeted towards house DJs and amateur home musicians rather than professional producers. It was superseded by the Roland MC-505. It is the predecessor to the Roland JX-305, Roland D2, Roland MC-307, Roland EG-101, Roland MC-09, Roland MC-909, Roland MC-808, and most recently the Roland MC-707 in 2019, along with its more portable sibling, the Roland MC-101.
The Yamaha AN1x is a DSP-based analog modeling synthesizer, produced by Yamaha Corporation from 1997 to 1998, and was marketed as an "analog physical modelling control synthesizer".
The Jupiter-8, or JP-8, is an eight-voice polyphonic analog subtractive synthesizer introduced by Roland Corporation in early 1981.
The Yamaha TX81Z is a rack-mounted (keyboard-less) frequency modulation (FM) music synthesizer, released in 1987. It is also known as a keyboard-less Yamaha DX11. Unlike previous FM synthesizers of the era, the TX81Z was the first to offer a range of oscillator waveforms other than just sine waves, conferring the new timbres of some of its patches when compared to older, sine-only FM synths. The TX81Z has developed a famous reputation, largely based on some of its preset bass sounds. The Yamaha DX11 keyboard synth was released the following year, offering improved editing abilities.

The RolandJuno-60 is an analog synthesizer manufactured by the Roland Corporation between 1982 and 1984. It followed the Juno-6, an almost identical synthesizer released months earlier. The Juno synthesizers introduced Roland's digitally controlled oscillators, allowing for greatly improved tuning stability over its competitors.
The Korg Poly-61(PS-61) is an analog synthesizer manufactured by Korg between 1982 and 1986. It was the first affordable synthesizer to feature two oscillators per voice, and was Korg's first synthesizer to feature digitally-controlled analog oscillators (DCOs). The Poly-61 marked a significant departure in design philosophy from previous Korg synthesizers by replacing the traditional array of dedicated control knobs on the front panel with a digital interface that required users to select parameters individually for adjustment.
The Roland XP-30 is a 61-key, 64-voice expandable synthesizer. Released in 1999, it was produced until 2002. Based on the acclaimed mid-90s JV sound engine built around a 32-bit RISC processor, it is considered to be the best value-for-money of all of the Roland JV and XP series synthesizers.
The Korg Wavestation is a vector synthesis synthesizer first produced in the early 1990s and later re-released as a software synthesizer in 2004. Its primary innovation was Wave Sequencing, a method of multi-timbral sound generation in which different PCM waveform data are played successively, resulting in continuously evolving sounds. The Wavestation's "Advanced Vector Synthesis" sound architecture resembled early vector synths such as the Sequential Circuits Prophet VS.
Hoover sound refers to a particular synthesizer sound in electronic music, commonly used in rave techno, hardcore techno, gabber, breakbeat hardcore, trance, hard house and hard NRG. Originally called the "Mentasm", the name that stuck was the one likening the sound to that of a vacuum cleaner.
The Roland JX-10 Super JX is a 12-voice analog synthesizer keyboard produced by Roland Corporation from 1986 to 1989, along with a rack-mounted version, the MKS-70. For nearly 30 years, it was the last true analog synthesizer made by Roland and has been critically acclaimed as one of their classic analog instruments. In 2015, Roland once again started producing analog synthesizers beginning with their JD-XA and JD-Xi keyboards as analog/digital crossover synthesizers. The design on the JX-10 is essentially two Roland JX-8P synthesizers put together, with a 76-note velocity-sensitive keyboard with aftertouch. It also includes features not found on the JX-8P, including a simple 1-track sketchbook sequencer and a delay effect. However, the JX-10 is not exactly the same as "two JX-8P's" because the chorus is not identical to the JX-8P. The JX-10 also has a slightly different amplifier section as well as different electronic components which further distinguish its sound from its predecessor, the JX-8P.
Roland JX-8P is a 61-key, velocity- and aftertouch-sensitive, six-note polyphonic, almost entirely analog synthesizer released by Roland in 1985. In a time of rising popularity of digital frequency modulation synthesizers, such as Yamaha DX7, JX-8P was marketed as the best of both worlds: while it was possible to create classic analog synth sounds, several new modulation parameters and redesigned hardware enabled it to produce certain types of sounds associated with FM synthesis, such as metallic percussive sounds. Likewise, traditional hands-on controls were replaced with a Yamaha DX7-style interface with membrane buttons and one "edit" slider.
Quasimidi Musikelektronik GmbH was a German synthesizer manufacturer from Hesse. It was founded in 1987 by Friedhelm Haar and Jörg Reichstein. It was originally based in Kirchhain, but moved to Rauschenberg in 1998. The company folded in 2000.
A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that generates audio signals. Synthesizers typically create sounds by generating waveforms through methods including subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis and frequency modulation synthesis. These sounds may be altered by components such as filters, which cut or boost frequencies; envelopes, which control articulation, or how notes begin and end; and low-frequency oscillators, which modulate parameters such as pitch, volume, or filter characteristics affecting timbre. Synthesizers are typically played with keyboards or controlled by sequencers, software or other instruments and may be synchronized to other equipment via MIDI.
Casio's SDSynthesizers were a late-1980s line of analog synthesizers featuring a resonant filter. SD synthesis was traditional DCO-analog synthesis, with the main difference being that some of the SD waveforms' harmonic spectrums changed temporally, or dynamically in relation to the amplitude envelope.
The Roland MKS-80 Super Jupiter is a rack mount sound module version of the Roland Jupiter-6 and the Roland Jupiter-8 synthesizers. It is an 8-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer that was manufactured by Roland between 1984 and 1987. It is the only one of the MKS series of synthesizers to have analogue voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) instead of analogue digitally-controlled oscillators (DCOs). The voice architecture is almost identical to the Jupiter-6 synthesizer. The service manual states that "The module board of MKS-80 features the following in addition to that of JP-6, its brother module. 1) HPF. 2) Low boost circuit in the 2nd VCA. 3) DC supply current boost circuit (IC50)."
The Korg DW-6000 is a polyphonic hybrid digital-analog synthesizer released in 1985. It blends digital waveforms with an analog filter and amplifier, also incorporating a chorus effect to create an enriched analog sound. The DW-6000 features six-note polyphony and was quickly succeeded by the DW-8000, also released in 1985, which introduced a velocity sensitive keyboard with aftertouch, a built-in arpeggiator, increased polyphony and waveforms, and substituted the chorus effect with a digital delay effect.
The AX60 is a polyphonic analogue keyboard synthesizer manufactured by Akai Professional in the mid-1980s. It was Akai's answer to the popular Roland Juno series synthesizers. The AX60 uses voltage-controlled analogue oscillators and filter circuitry based on the Curtis Electronics CEM 3394 integrated circuit.
The Korg Sigma KP-30 is a monophonic analog synthesizer released by Korg in 1979. The Sigma was designed for organ players and live performance, featuring a user-friendly layout for quick sound selection and editing as well as two modulation joysticks and an aftertouch-sensitive keyboard. It features two separate synthesizer engines called Synthe and Instrument which can be mixed and layered together.
