Rootstown High School was established in 1884 and met in a small building adjacent to the town hall a few blocks south of the current campus. This building housed high school students and grade levels, though many students in the township attended smaller schoolhouses spread across 10 rural districts. At the time, Rootstown Township was still divided into several smaller school districts and the high school was not fully accredited. The first class graduated in 1893. During the early 20th century, the smaller districts were gradually consolidated. Following construction of a new building that opened in 1917, the remaining districts in the township consolidated to the new central building and Rootstown High School became a fully accredited four-year high school.[1]
The centralized school, known as the Rootstown Township School, had additions built in 1938, 1950, and 1954. In 1958, population and enrollment growth necessitated construction of a separate elementary school, which was built immediately north of the building, and the existing building continued to house the junior high and high school grades. Following the completion of a new high school building, the original building became Rootstown Middle School.[1]

The current school building opened in 1966 and is located on the north end of the Rootstown Schools campus. The building, which also houses the Rootstown Local School District administrative offices, is named in honor of Ward W. Davis, who served as president of the Rootstown School Board for a number of years, including when the current facility opened. As of 2015, the school houses around 450 students in grades 9–12. Adjacent to the east of the high school is Robert C. Dunn Field, which includes a cinder running track, named for a former RHS principal and football coach. It is used for football, soccer, and track and field. The campus also has athletic fields for baseball and softball.[3]
Academics
Vocational and career education programs are available through Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna, which serves from Rootstown and nine additional school districts in Portage and Summit counties. The school offers 21 programs that are available to students in the 11th and 12th grades.[4][5]
Athletics
Rootstown High School athletic teams are known as the Rovers and the school colors are navy blue and white. Since 2005, the school has competed as a member of the Portage Trail Conference County Division. Prior to 2005, Rootstown was a long-time member of the Portage County League. All Rover athletic teams play their home games on the Rootstown Schools campus with a few exceptions. The bowling and golf teams play their home matches at other nearby locations. Bowling matches are held at Twin Star Lanes in Brady Lake, and the golf team hosts home matches at the Kent State University Golf Course in Franklin Township, both just east of Kent.
The first interpretation of the word Rover at Rootstown was a dog; a collie or German shepherd. In 1960 a new version of the mascot was adopted: the Rover that is defined as "a pirate, a wanderer, or a roamer" in Webster's Dictionary. The Rovers logo is a ship that is meant to symbolize the Norsemen. The current version of the nickname came into existence in the early years of RHS sports. The Rovers did not have a facility in which to engage in competitive sporting activities, thus they would "wander and roam" to other schools for sports, pirating victories.
Rootstown has had three state track champion individuals: Roger Dietz Sr. won the low and high hurdles in 1957; Ron Nipuelio won the 400-meters in 1990; and Josh Morgan won the 3200-meters in 1996.
In 1992 and in 1993 Evan Waligura took second in State for the 400 meters.
Two Rover sports teams have been state semifinalists: the 1981 football team and the 2003 softball team.

Right next to the football field, there is a large brass bell. In the 1950s the bell was on a steam locomotive on the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, and it was donated to Portage County and used as a football championship trophy. From 1957 to 1962, Rootstown won the bell for six straight years, and it was permanently awarded to them. The bell used to be mounted on a rolling platform and would be rolled down to the football field before each game so that the Rootstown Rover football team could ring the bell after each home victory. In 2013 a concrete pad was poured to mount the bell on, and an open-sided structure was built over the bell at the south end zone of Robert C. Dunn Field. The bell continues to be rung after each home victory.
Redmond High School (RHS) is a four-year public high school located in Redmond, Washington, one of four high schools in the Lake Washington School District (LWSD). Opened in 1964, Redmond High School is the second oldest high school in the Lake Washington School District. Redmond Middle School, Timberline Middle School, and Evergreen Middle School feed into Redmond High School.
Theodore Roosevelt High School, often referred to as Kent Roosevelt (KRHS), is a public high school in Kent, Ohio, United States. It is the only high school in Kent and the Kent City School District and serves students in grades 9–12 living in Kent, Franklin Township, Brady Lake, and Sugar Bush Knolls as well as a small portion of southern Streetsboro. As of the 2021–22 academic year, enrollment was 1,267 students with 73 teachers for a student–teacher ratio of 17:1. Recognition for academic performance over the years has come from the United States Department of Education, Ohio Department of Education, and U.S. News & World Report.
Mark Morris High School is a public high school in Longview, Washington, for grades nine through twelve. In 2013, it had an enrollment of 976 students.

The Rootstown Local School District is a secondary school district located in Rootstown, Ohio, United States. The district serves approximately 1,300 students in Rootstown Township in Portage County and has three schools: Rootstown Elementary School serving grades K-5, Rootstown Middle School serving grades 6–8, and Rootstown High School serving grades 9–12. All three schools are located on a central campus along SR 44 between I-76 and Tallmadge Road, just north of the Rootstown town center. Each building is named in honor of a past prominent member of the Rootstown Schools.
Beaver Local High School is a public high school near East Liverpool, Ohio, United States. It is the only secondary school in the Beaver Local School District, and serves the communities of Calcutta, Lake Tomahawk, and Rogers in southeastern Columbiana County, as well as parts of surrounding Elkrun, Madison, Middleton, and St. Clair townships. Falls High School is a public high school located in International Falls, Minnesota, United States. The school's class ring design is the oldest class ring tradition in the United States, dating back to 1929. As of 2014 approximately 600 students attend classes in the school. Every grade level ranges from 70-100 students. In the Fall of 2014 the school changed policies and changed over from a 6 period day to a 7 period day. John F. Kennedy Catholic School, often referred to as Warren JFK, is a private, Catholic school in Warren, Ohio, United States. It is owned and operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown and is divided into two campuses: the Upper Campus for grades 6–12 and the Lower Campus for grades K–5. The school athletic teams are known as the Eagles. The current building opened in 1964 as a replacement for St. Mary High School and was known as John F. Kennedy High School. Initial plans called for the new building to be named Annunciation High School, but after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, area Catholics asked the diocese to name the new school after Kennedy. In 2007, the school expanded to grades K-12 and was renamed John F. Kennedy Catholic School by adding the former Blessed Sacrament School. A junior high school program for 7th and 8th grades was added to the high school building, which was renamed the Upper Campus, while the former Blessed Sacrament School was renamed the Lower Campus for grades K–6. Later, 6th grade was moved to the Upper Campus. As of the 2017–18 school year, the school serves approximately 600 students in grades K–12, with over 300 at the Upper Campus.
