Round Prairie Township is one of eighteen townships in Callaway County, Missouri, USA. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1038. [3]

Geography

Round Prairie Township covers an area of 34.48 square miles (89.3 km2) and contains the unincorporated settlements of Carrington, near the headwaters of the Missouri River tributary Middle River, and Boydsville, near another Missouri River tributary (Cedar Creek) bordering Boone County, although no incorporated settlements. It contains four cemeteries: Boydsville, Hundley, Millers Creek and Paris Fork; as well as the streams of Davis Creek, Millers Creek and Smith Creek also run through this township.

History

Created on May 14, 1821, the township initially covered at least the northern 2/3 of the western border areas of Callaway County, from "the township line (boundary?) of 45 and 46 northward to the Audrain County line and eastward to a line along what is now the western boundary of West Fulton Township".

In 1824, Round Prairie Township was reduced in size by the creation of Cedar Township to its south from what was the remainder of the western sector of Cote Sans Dessein Township, and within a year, in 1825, Round Prairie Township was further reduced substantially in size with the creation of a larger-than-today Bourbon township from its northern sector. This continued for about 60 years.

A Round Prairie Post Office, from May 30, 1827 to June 16, 1841, 'about one-half mile north of New Bloomfield' was clearly inside previous Round Prairie Township boundaries, but near the boundary with the new Cedar Township created from its southern portion in 1824 (and 50 years prior to the creation of Guthrie Township). Between 1883 and 1897, Round Prairie Township was again reduced in size by the creation of Guthrie Township from its southernmost area. [6] These changes are significant for research on historical events and genealogy. Cedar Township is the southernmost of ten townships in Boone County, Missouri, USA. As of the 2012, its population was 4,190. The township's major cities include the river town of Hartsburg and part of the prairie town Ashland.

Cedar Creek is a stream in Boone and Callaway counties of the U.S. state of Missouri. It is a tributary of the Missouri River. The headwaters of Cedar Creek are in northeast Boone County about five miles east of Hallsville and one mile west of the Audrain-Boone county line. The stream flows south and about five miles south of its headwaters the stream becomes the boundary between Boone and Callaway counties. The stream crosses under Interstate 70 about eight miles east of Columbia and enters the Mark Twain National Forest. The stream flows south to southwest through the national forest and upon leaving the forest turns to the east and ceases to be the county line. The stream flows east for about one mile then turns south and flows under U. S. Route 63 and into the Missouri River four miles northwest of Cedar City and across the river from Jefferson City. The Katy Trail crosses Cedar Creek just north of its confluence with the Missouri.

Youngs Creek is a stream in Callaway County in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is a tributary of Stinson Creek. The stream headwaters arise southwest of Fulton at 38°50′20″N91°59′56″W and it flows southeast crossing under U.S. Route 54 and Missouri Route C northwest of Hams Prairie where its course turns north to its confluence with Stinson Creek southeast of Fulton at 38°48′43″N91°54′56″W at an elevation of 614 feet.
