The Royal Pier (previously called Victoria Pier) is a pier in Southampton, United Kingdom, [1] built during the 1830s of Victorian England and was in operation until its closure in late 1979.

The 900-foot (270 m) pier was opened on 8 July 1833 by the then Princess Victoria, [2] as Victoria Pier and was built to provide steamer services with somewhere to dock. [1] [3] Prior to the construction of the pier steamer passengers had to either transit the muddy foreshore or make use of Town Quay which was already crowded with other commercial activities. [3] Prior attempts to fund a pier had been made in 1825 and 1828, and in November 1829 the harbour board agreed to construct one. [3] The Southampton Pier Act 1831 (1 & 2 Will. 4. c. i) authorised the pier, and the construction was funded through a mortgage. [3] The pier was designed by Edward L. Stephens, a royal navy officer. [4]

Soon after its completion, the pier started to suffer from damage caused by gribble worms resulting in the foundations needing to be rebuilt in 1838. [5] In an attempt to prevent further gribble damage the pier's pilings were covered in large headed nails which it was hoped would rust and provide the pier with a protective coating. [5] In 1847 a horse-drawn tramway was constructed to link the pier to Southampton Terminus railway station. [1] In 1871 the tramway was extended to the end of the pier with a single platform station being built there. [1] In 1876 the trams switched from being horse-drawn to using light steam locomotives. [1] The LSWR eventually acquiring five 0-4-0WT condensing locomotives. These were augmented by two railcars in the early 20th century. [6] In 1888 the pier was given a new gatehouse. [1]

Over a two-year period starting in 1891 the pier was rebuilt in iron and the station was expanded to house two platforms and the facilities to allow the pier to be used as a pleasure pier added. [1] These facilities included a pavilion. [1] The money for the pier's expansion came from part of a loan of £100,000 taken out by the harbour board which was also used to pay for dredging. [7] The rebuilt pier was opened in 1902 by Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn. [8] In 1894 the gatehouse was expanded and four years later a new pontoon was added to the pier enabling two steamers to be berthed simultaneously. [1] The addition of the new pontoon coincided with the pier being renamed to Royal Pier. [1]

20th century

The start of World War I resulted in the suspension of public tramway services to the station on the pier on 1 October 1914. [1] During the war the pier was damaged when a ship hit it. [1] This damage prevented the tram line from reopening at the end of the war and the line was officially closed in 1921. [1]

The pavilion was enlarged in 1922 and the gatehouse was again rebuilt in 1930. The enlarged pavilion could seat up to 1000 people and was a popular dance venue. [9] During World War II the pier was closed to the public, re-opening in 1947. [1]

The pier was adapted to support RoRo ferries in the 1950s when Red Funnel introduced MV Carisbrooke Castle. [1] The pavilion underwent work to turn it into a ballroom in 1963. [1]

Closure and disrepair

The pier was closed at the end of 1979. [1] The gatehouse was reopened as a restaurant in 1986 but a fire on 4 May 1987 destroyed many of the structures on the pier. [1] In 1992 another fire damaged the restaurant. [1] The restaurant reopened in 2008 serving Thai cuisine. [1] The gatehouse is a Grade II listed building. [2]

As of 2020, the pier remains in derelict condition; numerous calls have been made to renovate or rebuild it. [10] These calls include a £450m consultation submitted in 2015 [11] for the area to be incorporated into a luxury waterside development consisting of housing, shops, a hotel and a casino, [12] though progress on the development past the planning stage appeared to have stalled and the plan was ultimately terminated by Southampton City Council on 23 August 2019. [13]

Southend Pier is a major landmark in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, United Kingdom. Extending 1.33 miles (2.14 km) into the Thames Estuary, it is the longest pleasure pier in the world. The bill to build the new pier, to replace a previous timber jetty, received royal assent as the Southend Pier Act 1829 in May 1829 with construction starting in July 1829. It is used both by commuters and tourists, and forms an important link in the Solent Way, England Coast Path and E9 European coastal paths. The railway is the oldest continuously operating public pier train in the world. The ferry is now operated by Red Funnel, while the Pier is owned by Blue Funnel and Railways owned and run by the Hythe Pier Heritage Trust.

Birnbeck Pier, also known as the 'Old Pier', is a pier situated on the Bristol Channel in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, England, approximately 18 miles (29 km) south-west of Bristol. It is the only pier in the country which links the mainland to an island, linking to Birnbeck Island, a 1.2-hectare (3-acre) rocky island just to the west of Worlebury Hill. The grade II* listed pier was designed by Eugenius Birch and opened in 1867. Birnbeck Pier is one of only six Grade II* piers surviving in the country. The refreshment and waiting rooms of 1898 were designed by local architect Hans Price and the clocktower and the piermaster's house have been attributed to him.

Herne Bay Pier was the third pier to be built at Herne Bay, Kent for passenger steamers. It was notable for its length of 3,787 feet (1,154 m) and for appearing in the opening sequence of Ken Russell's first feature film French Dressing. It was destroyed in a storm in 1978 and dismantled in 1980, leaving a stub with sports centre at the landward end, and part of the landing stage isolated at sea. It was preceded by two piers: a wooden deep-sea pier designed by Thomas Rhodes, assistant of Thomas Telford, and a second shorter iron version by Wilkinson & Smith.

Penarth Pier is a Victorian era pier in the town of Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales. The pier was opened in 1898 and was a popular attraction to seaside-goers at the time, who also enjoyed trips on pleasure steamers that operated from the pier. It has on several occasions been damaged by vessels colliding with the structure and in 1931, a fire broke out in one of the pavilions. This wooden pavilion was never replaced, but a concrete pavilion has been used over the years as a concert hall, ballroom, cinema and for other purposes. It is currently home to the Penarth Pier Pavilion.

Town Quay is a quay and pier in Southampton, England.

The Melbourne tram network began in 1884 with the construction of the Fairfield Horse Tramway. However, the purpose of the line was to increase land prices in the area, and it soon closed during the depression in 1890. The first genuine attempt to construct a tramway network was the construction of the Richmond cable tram line by the Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Company in 1885. Over the next few years, 16 more cable tram lines were constructed, as well as numerous other horse tramways. The depression of the early 1890s slowed further expansion of the cable network. The first electric tram line was the Box Hill and Doncaster tramway which opened in 1889. This was a pioneering line in what was then the countryside and thus didn't receive much patronage. It closed in 1896. The next attempt at an electric tramway was Victorian Railways' St Kilda to Brighton line, which opened in 1906. Later that year, the North Melbourne Electric Tramway & Lighting Company opened lines to Essendon and Maribyrnong. Many local councils formed their own tramway trusts and built tramways within their own constituency. The most successful of these was the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">St Leonards Pier</span> Public pleasure pier

St Leonards Pier, also known as the Palace Pier, was a public pleasure pier in St Leonards-on-Sea, part of the town and borough of Hastings in East Sussex, England. Opened in 1891 the pier was a direct rival to nearby Hastings Pier, and during its heyday the pier was a leading tourist attraction, and was described in the 1894 Baedeker travel guide as handsome. The pier was damaged during WW2 and left derelict after the war until purchased by Hastings Corporation in 1951 who demolished the structure over the next two years.
