Rukmini Vasanth (born 10 December 1996), is an Indian actress who works predominately in Kannada, Tamil and Telugu films. She made her debut with Birbal (2019). Rukmini got her major breakthrough in 2023 two part romantic drama Sapta Saagaradaache Ello , for which she won Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress – Kannada. [1]
Rukmini Vasanth was born on 10 December 1996 into a Kannada-speaking family in Bengaluru. Her father, Colonel Vasanth Venugopal, is Karnataka's first recipient of India's highest peacetime military decoration, the Ashoka Chakra. [2] [3] He was killed in action in 2007 while preventing heavily armed infiltrators from crossing the India-Pakistan border at Uri, Jammu and Kashmir. [4] Her mother, Subhashini Vasanth, is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer who has set up a foundation to support war widows in Karnataka. [5]
Rukmini was educated at Army School, Air Force School and Centre for Learning. She obtained an acting degree from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in Bloomsbury, London. [6] [7]
Rukmini made her debut with the 2019 Kannada film Birbal Trilogy opposite M. G. Srinivas. [8]
Rukmini played Priya opposite Rakshit Shetty, in the 2023 films, Sapta Saagaradaache Ello – Side A and Sapta Saagaradaache Ello – Side B, [9] which found commercial success. [10] A. Sharadhaa of The New Indian Express noted, "Rukmini effortlessly emerges as the luminary, and she doles out a remarkable performance as Priya," [11] The same year, she appeared opposite Ganesh, in Baanadariyalli . [12]
In 2024, Rukmini appeared in two successful Kannada films: Bagheera opposite Sriimurali, [13] [14] and Bhairathi Ranagal opposite Shiva Rajkumar. [15] She also made her Telugu film debut with Appudo Ippudo Eppudo opposite Nikhil Siddhartha. [16]
In 2025, she ventured into Tamil cinema with Ace, playing the role of Rukku opposite Vijay Sethupathi, [17] and Madharaasi , directed by A. R. Murugadoss, co-starring Sivakarthikeyan. [18] The film received mixed reviews overall, but generated positive word of mouth, with her performance earning particular praise. She will next star in Kantara: Chapter 1, a prequel to the film Kantara (2022 film). She is also a part of Geetu Mohandas's Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups alongside Yash (actor) and an ensemble cast.
