Salmin Kasimu Maengo (born 9 May 1995), popularly known by his producer-artist name S2KIZZY, is a Tanzanian record producer and songwriter. He is best known for producing Bongo Flava songs "Amaboko" by Rayvanny ft Diamond Platnumz, and "Tetema" by Rayvanny ft Diamond platnumz. He has produced albums for and overseen the careers of Diamond Platnumz, Rayvanny, Bill Nass and Vanessa Mdee. He is credited as a 'super-producer' in contemporary Bongo-Flava, Bongo-Trap, Afrobeats and Afro-pop. [1]

Maengo is the founder and current CEO of Pluto Records, but works predominantly with WCB (Wasafi Classic Baby). [2]

Early life and career beginnings

Salmin, named after the late President of Zanzibar Salmin Amour, was born in Mbeya, and raised by his auntie as her own. His mother passed away when he was 3 years old, shortly after which his father left and remarried. He was raised a Muslim.

His interest in music begin early, and during primary school he started to learn how to play the drums. Later, during his secondary years he attended a boarding school kwiro boys high school in Morogoro, Tanzania. He used this opportunity to borrow his teacher's laptop which he used to self-teach music production. He would tell his auntie that he needed to stay in the school during the holidays as punishment, to insure that he had time to focus on improving his craft.

He has described in several interviews the struggles he faced at the start of his career.

Events

In 2020 there was a break-in at his studio in Dar es Salaam which was widely reported. Then President of Tanzania, John Pombe Joseph Magufuli, vouched to find the responsible party and government representatives personally investigated the matter. [4] [5]

In 2021 when the late president of Tanzania, John Pombe Magufuli, passed S2Kizzy together with AYO LIZER, ABBAH PROCESS, DONNY and other producers produced a song to commemorate his legacy featuring several Tanzanian artistes. The collaboration was widely reported and featured artists such as: Zuchu, Ben Pol, Diamond Platnumz, Rayvanny, Jux, Queen Darleen, Lava Lava,darasa, and Marioo, amongst others. [6]

As it is in other countries, the music in Tanzania is constantly undergoing changes, and varies by location, people, settings and occasion. The five music genres in Tanzania, as defined by BASATA are, ngoma, dansi, kwaya, and taarab, with bongo flava being added in 2001. Singeli has since the mid-2000s been an unofficial music of uswahilini, unplanned communities in Dar es Salaam, and is the newest mainstream genre since 2020.

Bongo Flava is a nickname for Tanzanian music. The genre developed in the 1990s, mainly as a derivative of American hip hop and traditional Tanzanian styles such as taarab and dansi, with additional influences from reggae, R&B, and afrobeats, to form a unique style of music. Lyrics are usually in Swahili or English, although increasingly from mid 2000s there has been limited use of words from Sub-Saharan African music traditions due to the influence of Afrobeats and Kwaito with their dynamics usage of West African Pidgin English, Nigerian Pidgin or other Creole language.

The 13th edition of the Tanzania Music Awards took place at the Mlimani City Conference Center in Dar es Salaam, on Saturday 14 April 2012. The event was anchored by Vanessa Mdee and Millard Ayo. The nominees were announced on 8 February 2012 with Bongo Flava artist Diamond Platnumz topping the list with seven nominations. Two days after the list was released, four-time nominee Dully Sykes announced his withdrawal from the event. He stated 'it does not contribute to my growth whatsoever, and this contest is full of lies'. After leaving the 2011 Tanzania Music Awards empty-handed, Diamond Platnumz made a return by winning three awards, including Best Male Artist and Best Video.

He was born and raised in Nzovwe ward of Mbeya city, located in Mbeya Region. He is the most successful bongo flava musician in Tanzania from Mbeya region. His songs are mainly in Swahili. He is the founder and CEO of Next Level Music. Rayvanny is best known by his song "Kwetu", which introduced him to the world. Rayvanny was mentioned by MTV Base among "Acts To Look Out For" in 2017.

Wasafi Classic Baby (WCB) is a Tanzania-based record label founded by musician Diamond Platnumz. WCB's commercial roster includes Diamond Platnumz, Mbosso, Zuchu, Lava Lava, Queen Darleen, and D Voice. The label is headquartered at Mbezi Beach, Dar Es Salaam. The label's Vice President is RJ The DJ, who is also Diamond Platnumz's official DJ, while the official producer of the label is Lizer Classic. In 2017, the WCB Wasafi artists released a joint project titled Zilipendwa, and in 2020, they released their second single titled Quarantine. In 2021, WCB Wasafi signed a publishing and distribution deal with Ziiki and Warner Music Group.

A Boy from Tandale is the third studio album by Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz - following Kamwambie (2010) and Lala Salama (2012). It was released on March 14, 2018, by Universal Music Group. After joining Universal Music Group in 2017, Diamond began working on the songs which would be used on the album. Musically, A Boy from Tandale is an afro-pop, Bongo Flava album that displays influences of music from West of Africa - especially Nigeria.

Abdulazizi Abubakari Chende (Dogo Janja), (born September 15 1994), is a Tanzanian singer-songwriter and rapper. He was born in Arusha and raised in Ngarenaro ward in the city of Arusha located in the Arusha Region. He is currently based in Dar es Salaam.

Zuhura Othman Soud better known by her stage name Zuchu, born is a Tanzanian singer and songwriter born in Zanzibar. She is based in Dar es Salaam and signed to WCB Wasafi record label. She was awarded the Silver Plaque Button by YouTube for hitting 100,000 subscribers within a week. She became the first East African female artist to reach that milestone within a week.
