The SMU Mustangs women's soccer program represents Southern Methodist University in National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I. The Mustangs compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and play their home games on SMU's campus in Dallas, Texas at Westcott Field. [2]

History

The SMU women's soccer program played their first season in 1986 under the direction of head coach Alan Kirkup. The Mustangs made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1990. [3]

The Southwest Conference sponsored women's soccer in 1995, and in that season the Mustangs advanced to the NCAA Final Four after winning both the SWC regular season and tournament championships. [3]

SMU joined the Western Athletic Conference in 1996, and Greg Ryan took over the program. The Mustangs returned to the NCAA Tournament in 1997, and won the regular season conference title in all three of Ryan's seasons at SMU. [3]

George Van Linder was named head coach in 1999, and SMU continued their success with three NCAA Tournament appearances and three regular season conference championships in Van Linder's four seasons. [3]

John Cossaboon took control as head coach in 2003, and SMU returned to the NCAA Tournament again in both 2003 and 2004. The Mustangs also won both the WAC regular season and tournament championships in their final two seasons in the WAC. [3]

In the nine seasons SMU competed in the WAC, the Mustangs advanced to the NCAA Tournament six times. The Mustangs also won the conference regular season championship eight times and the conference postseason tournament championship six times. [3]

SMU joined Conference USA in 2005, and the Mustangs continued their success with two more appearances in the NCAA Tournament as well as two more regular season conference championships under the direction of Cossaboon. [3]

Two-time National Coach Of The Year Chris Petrucelli was named head coach of SMU in 2012. [4] The Mustangs joined The American Athletic Conference in 2013. [2]

The Mustangs play their home games at Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium (previously, "Westcott Field") on the campus of SMU. The soccer field is natural grass and measures 115 yards (105 m) x 75 yards (69 m). [6]

In 2022, the stadium was extensively renovated to include locker rooms, training facilities and new grandstands. [7]

The SMU Mustangs men's soccer team represents Southern Methodist University in men's college soccer. The team currently competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Mustangs made their most recent appearance in the NCAA National Tournament in 2019, their third consecutive tournament appearance and fourth in five seasons. In 2019 the Mustangs reached their thirteenth Elite Eight before falling to No.1 Seed Virginia 3–2 in overtime. The Mustangs also claimed their third consecutive American Athletic Conference Tournament Title defeating Central Florida 1–0 in Orlando. This was the third consecutive year UCF and SMU meet in the AAC Tournament final as the Mustangs claimed their fifth conference title over the last three seasons. In 2017, the Mustangs reached the round of sixteen for the 18th time in program history. In 2017, they also became the first program in American Athletic Conference history to claim both the regular season and conference tournament championship, a feat they repeated in 2018 defeating Temple 2–1 in the final game of the regular season and defeating UCF in a shootout in Orlando in the AAC Tournament Final. The Mustangs have been one of the top men's collegiate sides in the NCAA since being founded in 1975, and are regularly featured in Top 25 polls. The Mustangs used to be coached by former FC Dallas and current Grand Canyon University coach Schellas Hyndman. Current FC Dallas coach Luchi Gonzalez played for the Mustangs from 1998 to 2001.

The 1997 Western Athletic Conference Mustangs football team represented Southern Methodist University (SMU) as a member of the Mountain Division of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) during 1997 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led by first-year head coach Mike Cavan, the Mustangs compiled an overall record of 6–5 with a mark of 5–3 in conference play, tying for second place in the WAC's Mountain Division. Ten years after the NCAA's 1987 "death penalty" on SMU football, SMU's 1997 campaign was the program's first winning season since the football program resumed operations in 1989. The Mustangs played their home games at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

The 1998 Western Athletic Conference Mustangs football team represented Southern Methodist University (SMU) as a member of the Mountain Division of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) during the 1998 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led by second-year head coach Mike Cavan, the Mustangs finished the season with an overall record of 5–7 and a mark of 4–4 in conference play, tying for fifth place in the WAC's Mountain Division. However, SMU vacated 10 games after Steve Malin was found to have been ineligible due to academic fraud. The Mustangs played their home games at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.

The SMU Mustangs women's volleyball team is the NCAA Division I women's volleyball team at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. The program began its first season in 1996. Its current head coach is Samantha Erger. Their first head coach was Lisa Seifert, who led the program from 1996–2021. She finished her career with 415 wins, the second-most of any coach at SMU.

The 2017–18 SMU Mustangs men's basketball team represents Southern Methodist University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Mustangs were led by second-year head coach Tim Jankovich and play their home games at Moody Coliseum on their campus in University Park, Texas as members of the American Athletic Conference. They finished the season 17–16, 6–12 in AAC play to finish in ninth place. In the AAC tournament, they defeated UConn before losing to Cincinnati in the quarterfinals.

The 2017 American Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament was the postseason women's soccer tournament for the American Athletic Conference held from November 1 to 5, 2017. The five-match tournament took place at UCF Soccer and Track Stadium, home field of the regular season champion UCF Knights in Orlando, Florida. The six-team single-elimination tournament consisted of three rounds based on seeding from regular season conference play. The Connecticut Huskies were the defending tournament champions, but they were eliminated from the 2017 tournament with a 3–1 first round loss to the Memphis Tigers. South Florida won the tournament by virtue of winning the penalty shoot-out tiebreaking procedure following a tie with UCF in the final. The conference tournament title was the first for the South Florida women's soccer program and for their head coach, Denise Schilte-Brown.
