Empire Eland was a 5,613 GRT Design 1019 cargo ship that was built in 1920 as West Kedron by Long Beach Shipbuilding Co, Long Beach, California, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB). She was transferred to the United States Maritime Commission (USMC) in 1937. In 1940, she was transferred to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was torpedoed and sunk by U-94 on the night of 15–16 September 1941.
The ship was built in 1920 by Long Beach Shipbuilding Co, Long Beach, California. [1] She was yard number 137, [2]
As built, the ship was 410 feet 5 inches (125.10 m) long, with a beam of 54 feet 2 inches (16.51 m). She had a depth of 27 feet 2 inches (8.28 m), [3] and a draught of 24 feet 0+1⁄2 inch (7.328 m). [4] She was assessed at 5,620 GRT, 3,516 NRT, [3] 8,538 DWT. [2]
The ship was propelled by a 359 nhp triple expansion steam engine, which had cylinders of 24+1⁄2 inches (62 cm), 41+1⁄2 inches (105 cm)) and 72 inches (180 cm) diameter by 48 inches (120 cm) stroke. The engine was built by Llewellyn Iron Works, Los Angeles, California. [3] It drove a single screw propeller and could propel the ship at 10.5 knots (19.4 km/h). [5]
West Kedron was built in 1920 for the USSB. [1] The United States Official Number 220317 and Code Letters LWVR were allocated. Her port of registry was Los Angeles, California. [3] She was delivered in August 1920. [2] In 1928, she was transferred to the American West African Line, and placed under the management of the Barber Steamship Co. West Kedron was returned to the USSB in 1933. [6] With the change of Code Letters in 1934, West Kedron was allocated KDAP. [7] The USSB became the USMC in 1937, [5] and her port of registry was changed to New York. [7] West Kedron was then laid up as part of the reserved fleet. [6]
In 1940, West Kedron was transferred to the Ministry of Shipping, which later became part of the MoWT. [1] She was due to join Convoy HX 69, which departed from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on 28 August and arrived at Liverpool, Lancashire on 12 September. She did not sail with this convoy, but joined the next convoy. [8] This was Convoy HX 70, which sailed on 1 September and arrived at Liverpool on 16 September. West Kedron was carrying a cargo of pig iron bound for Swansea, Glamorgan. [9] West Kedron was a member of Convoy WN 25, which departed from the Clyde on 23 October and arrived at Methil, Fife on 27 October. [10] She then joined Convoy FS 322, which departed on 29 October and arrived at Southend, Essex on 1 November. [11]
West Kedron was renamed Empire Eland becoming one of the Empire ships. [1] The United Kingdom Official Number 168041 and Code Letters GLXD were allocated. She was placed under the management of Douglas & Ramsey. Her port of registry was London. She was assessed as 5,613 GRT, 3,520 NRT. [4] Empire Eland was a member of Convoy FN 346, which departed from Southend on 29 November and arrived at Methil on 1 December. [12] She then joined Convoy EN 35, which departed on 2 December and arrived at Oban, Argyllshire on 6 December. [13] She continued on to the Clyde, arriving on 7 December. Empire Eland was a member of Convoy OB 262, which departed from Liverpool on 20 December and dispersed at sea on 23 December. She was in ballast, bound for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. [14] She arrived on 10 January 1941, sailing on 27 January for Halifax, where she arrived on 22 January. [12] Laden with a cargo of steel, Empire Eland was a member of Convoy HX 108, which departed from Halifax on 9 February and arrived at Liverpool on 27 February. [15] She then sailed to Newport, Monmouthshire, from where she departed on 18 March for Swansea, arriving the next day. [12]
Empire Eland departed from Swansea on 19 March for the Clyde, arriving on 21 March. [12] She was a member of Convoy OB 303, which departed from Liverpool on 28 March and dispersed at sea on 3 April. She was bound for Baltimore, Ohio. [16] Empire Eland is recorded as leaving Halifax on 15 April, and returning on 25 April. She then joined Convoy SC 30, [12] which departed on 29 April and arrived at Liverpool on 20 May. She was carrying a cargo of steel, [17] and left the convoy at Loch Ewe, arriving on 16 May. Empire Eland then sailed to the Belfast Lough, arriving on 19 May. [12] She then joined Convoy BB 23, which departed on 20 May and arrived at Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire on 22 May. [18] She sailed on to Newport, arriving later that day. [12]
Empire Eland sailed from Newport to Swansea on 1 June, departing on 7 June for Milford Haven, where she arrived later that day, sailing two days later to join Convoy OB 333, [12] which departed from Liverpool on 10 June and dispersed at 40°20′N34°40′W / 40.333°N 34.667°W on 21 June. She was bound for Boston, Massachusetts, [19] where she arrived on 1 July. She sailed on 27 July for Halifax, arriving on 29 July. [12] Empire Eland was a member of Convoy HX 142, which departed on 1 August and arrived at Liverpool on 18 August. She was carrying a cargo of scrap steel. [20]
Empire Eland was a member of Convoy ON 14, which departed from Liverpool on 7 September and dispersed at 56°25′N24°50′W / 56.417°N 24.833°W on 14 September. She straggled behind the convoy. [21] At 23:48 German time on 15 September, Empire Eland was struck by a torpedo fired by U-94, under the command of Kapitänleutnant Otto Ites. A coup de grâce fired at 23:57 missed, but a second fired at 00:30 sank the ship at 54°00′N28°00′W / 54.000°N 28.000°W . All 32 crew and five DEMS gunners were killed. [6] Those killed serving on Empire Eland are commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. [22]
Derwentfield was an 8,602 GRT tanker that was built as Empire Coral in 1941 by Sir J Laing & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, United Kingdom. She was built for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1946, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Derwent River. Another sale in 1947 saw her renamed Derwentfield. She served until 1952 when she was severely damaged by an explosion and subsequent fire. In 1953, she was declared a constructive total loss and scrapped.
West Saginaw was a 5,758 GRT Design 1013 cargo ship that was built in 1919 by Northwest Steel Company, Portland, Oregon, United States. She was built for the United States Shipping Board, passing to the United States Maritime Commission in 1936. In 1941, she was transferred to the British Ministry of War Transport and renamed Empire Cougar.
Empire Crossbill was a 5,463 GRT Design 1013 cargo ship that was completed in 1919 by Los Angeles Shipbuilding & Drydock Company, San Pedro, California, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB). She was transferred to the United States Maritime Commission (USMC) in 1937 and the Ministry of Transport (MoT) in 1941, serving until she was torpedoed and sunk on 11 September 1941 by U-82 in the Atlantic Ocean while a member of Convoy SC 42.
Empire Dabchick was a 5,995 GRT Design 1019 cargo ship that was built in 1919 as Kisnop by Atlantic Corporation, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB). She was transferred to the United States Maritime Commission (USMC) in 1937. In 1940 she was transferred to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Dabchick. She served until December 1942, when she was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U-183.
MV Empire Day was a 7,241 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1941 as a CAM ship by William Doxford & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, Co Durham, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1943, she was converted to a standard cargo ship. She served until August 1944 when she was torpedoed and sunk by U-198.
Kollbjørg was a 8,236 GRT tanker that was built in 1941 as Empire Diamond by Harland & Wolff, Belfast, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was transferred to the Norwegian Government in 1942 and renamed Norsol. In 1946 she was sold into merchant service and renamed Kollbjørg. A sale to Sweden in 1956 saw her renamed Storo, she served until 1959 when she was scrapped.
Esso Appalachee was a 9,819 GRT tanker that was built in 1942 as Empire Dickens by Furness Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Haverton Hill-on-Tees, County Durham, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1946, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Esso Appalachee, serving until 1960, when she was scrapped.
Empire Dorado was a 5,595 GRT design 1019 cargo ship that was built in 1920 as Tolosa by Atlantic Corporation, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB), passing to the United States Maritime Commission (USMC) in 1937. She was sold to the United Kingdom in 1940, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Dominica. She served until November 1941, when she was in collision with another ship. Although taken in tow, she subsequently sank.
Norholm was a 9,813 GRT tanker that was built in 1942 as Empire Druid by Sir J Laing & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, Co Durham, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1942, she was transferred to the Norwegian Government and renamed Norholm. She was sold into merchant service in 1946, and renamed Haukefjell. Fitted with a new engine in 1949, she was sold to Panama in 1952 and renamed Bluewater. She served until 1959, when she was scrapped in Japan.
Norlom was a 6,326 GRT Design 1105 cargo ship that was built in 1919 as Editor by Skinner & Eddy Corporation, Seattle, Washington, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB), which became the United States Maritime Commission (USMC) in 1937. In 1941, she was transferred to the British Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Dunlin. She was transferred to Norway in 1942 and renamed Norlom. She served until 2 December 1943 when she was bombed and sunk at Bari, Italy.
Norjerv was a 5,583 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1919 as West Islip by Ames Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co, Seattle, Washington, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB). In 1928, she was sold and renamed Golden Rod. A further sale in 1935 saw her renamed Willhilo. She was renamed Indianan after a sale in 1937. In 1940, she was transferred to the Ministry of Supply (MoS) and renamed Empire Eagle, passing later that year to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). In 1942, she was transferred to the Norwegian Government and renamed Norjerv, serving until June 1944 when she was transferred to the British Government. In July 1944, she was sunk as a blockship at Juno Beach, Calvados, France to reinforce Gooseberry 4.
Norvarg was a 4,748 GRT Design 1014 refrigerated cargo ship that was built in 1920 as Rotarian by the Todd Dry Dock and Construction Company, Tacoma, Washington, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB). She was sold to the Grace Steamship Co Inc, New York in 1923 and renamed Condor. In 1940, she was sold to the British Ministry of Shipping (MoS), which became the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) in 1941, and was renamed Empire Elk. In 1942, she was transferred to the Norwegian Government and renamed Norvarg.
Empire Emerald was a 8,032 GRT tanker that was built in 1941 by Furness Shipbuilding Co Ltd, Haverton Hill-on-Tees, Co Durham, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She was sold into merchant service in 1946 and renamed El Gallo, serving until 1959 when she was scrapped.
Empire Energy was a 6,548 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1923 as Grete by Neptun AG, Rostock, Germany. She was sold to an Italian firm in 1932 and renamed Gabbiano. She was seized by the United Kingdom in 1940, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Energy. She served until 5 November 1941, when she ran aground off Cape Norman, Newfoundland, and was wrecked.
Empire Eve was a 5,979 GRT CAM ship that was built in 1941 by William Pickersgill & Sons Ltd, Sunderland, Co Durham, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). She served until 1943, when she was torpedoed and sunk by U-414 off Algeria.
Talthybius was a 10,224 GRT Cargo liner that was built in 1911 by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering Co Ltd, Greenock, Renfrewshire, United Kingdom for a British shipping line. She was sunk at Singapore in an air raid in 1942. Salvaged by the Japanese, she was renamed Taruyasu Maru, serving with the Imperial Japanese Navy until 1945 when she either struck a mine off Sado Island and sank or was sunk in an attack by aircraft of Task Force 38. She was salvaged by the British, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Evenlode. She served until 1949, when she was scrapped.
Empire Explorer was a 5,985 GRT cargo ship that was built as the cargo liner Inanda in 1925 by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson Ltd, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, United Kingdom for a British shipping line. She was hired by the Royal Navy in 1940 for use as an ocean boarding vessel but was sunk in an air raid London in September 1940. She was salvaged, rebuilt as a cargo ship, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Explorer. She served until 9 July 1942, when she was torpedoed and sunk by U-575 in the West Indies.
Empire Faith was a 7,061 GRT CAM ship that was built in 1941 by Barclay Curle & Co, Glasgow, Renfrewshire, United Kingdom for the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). Converted to a cargo ship in 1943, she was sold to a British company in 1946 and renamed Jessmore. In 1958, she was sold to a Panamanian company and renamed Antiope. A further sale in 1964 saw her renamed Global Venture. She served until 1971, when she was scrapped.
Quistconck was a 5,144 GRT Design 1022 Hog Islander that was laid down as Red Jacket in 1918 by the Stone & Webster subsidiary American International Shipbuilding Corp., Hog Island, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB). Launched as Quistconck, she was sold to Lykes Brothers - Ripley Steamship Co Inc in 1933. In 1941, she was passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Falcon. She was sold into merchant service in 1946 and renamed Barnby. A sale to a Panamanian company saw her renamed Mariandrea. She served until 1953, when she was scrapped.
Jolee was a 5,500-gross register ton (GRT) Design 1022 cargo ship that was built in 1920 by American International Shipbuilding, Hog Island, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States for the United States Shipping Board (USSB). Launched as Cardington, She was completed as Jolee. She was sold in 1933 to Lykes Brothers - Ripley Steamship Co Inc. She was purchased by the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) in 1941 and renamed Empire Flamingo. She served until June 1944 when she was sunk as a blockship at Juno Beach.
