Saidus Salehin Khaled Sumon (born 8 January 1973), popularly known by his nickname Bassbaba Sumon, is a Bangladeshi rock singer-songwriter, bass player, composer, music producer and founder of the Bangladeshi rock band Aurthohin. He is the band leader and spokesperson of Aurthohin since the beginning. [1] [2] [3]
Sumon was born and raised in Dhaka. He started learning bass by himself at the age of 14. He first auditioned for rock band Feelings in 1990 at the age of 16 and joined the band that year. He had played in 11 bands by the age of 19. In 1996, he joined Warfaze and later appeared in the band's 1998 hit album "অসামাজিক (Antisocial)" and left the band. In 1997, his first solo album "সুমন ও অর্থহীন (Sumon and Aurthohin)" was released while he was in Warfaze. Later, after leaving Warfaze, he formed Aurthohin.
He is mostly known for his slapping and tapping style in bass playing and is considered to be the most influential and greatest bassist in the country. His style of playing bass and success in music has earned him the title "Bassbaba" (Father of Bass). According to the website labella, Sumon has single handedly changed the role of bass guitar in Bangladeshi Music. [4]
Sumon was born in 1973 in Dhaka, Bangladesh to Nazmul Ahsan Khaled and Shamsun Nahar Khaled. [ citation needed ] He attended Government Laboratory High School. After that, he completed his graduation from Dhaka City College. He started playing Hawaiian guitar at the age of 7. In an interview,[ citation needed ] Sumon stated that he was unable to buy a Spanish guitar, so he took his Hawaiian guitar to a shop and converted it into a Spanish guitar. He picked up his first Spanish guitar and formed his first band when he was 12. One day he was seeing an Iron Maiden show on TV. He was heavily inspired by Steve Harris. Since then he started playing the bass guitar. He was 14. He joined one of the most popular bands in Bangladesh 'Feelings' as a bassist when he was 16 where he played with Faruq Mahfuz Anam, commonly known as James. He did the first ever unaccompanied bass solo in Bangladesh when he was 17. [5]
He played with 11 bands by the age of 19. He also wrote, sang, and produced his first solo album when by that time. He is known for his nice grooves, excellent use of different bass playing techniques, and, mostly, for his frequent bass solos in his band Aurthohin's songs. [6] [5]
Bangladesh is a country where rock music, especially metal and alternative rock, is getting popular and Bassbaba Sumon is credited as one of the few most influential artists in this sector. He has single-handedly changed the role of bass guitar in Bangladeshi Music. It is said that bass playing has become a hugely attractive thing to the young music lovers of this country only because of the influence of Bassbaba Sumon. He is also a key figure in promoting Rock music in this country. [5]
In 2016 he released his first solo bass album named "Soul Food Part 1".In the album, Sumon collaborated and featured world-renowned musicians, the likes of Felix Pastorius, Robert ‘Bubby’ Lewis, Josh Cohen, Bob Franceschini, J.D. Blair and Erfan Nazem Zadeh. Talented Bangladeshi drummer Mark Don is also featured in one of the tracks. [7]
Sumon has cited Steve Harris as his primary influence for switching to bass from guitar. He was also inspired by various funk bassists such as Victor Wooten, Billy Sheehan and Stuart Ham. He mostly plays with slapping and tapping. His slapping technique helped Aurthohin bring funky sound. His notable solos are - Shaat Din, Guti (The Finale), Surjo 2, Nirbodh, Nikkrishto 3, Punorjonmo (Guti-5), Cancer Casserole, Better Call Salt & The Walking Bread, Tapping Tempura, etc. [5]
After the release of Aurthohin's fourth album, ' Dhrubok', Sumon's health deteriorated. In 2011, it was announced that he had a spine and stomach cancer. After surgery and chemotherapy, Sumon was pronounced cancer-free in 2013. He also suffered from skin cancer and a brain tumour. [5] He wrote a song about his illness, "Cancer", which appeared on ' Aushomapto 2'. Later cancer came back several times but he recovered. He also had a road accident and broke several bones including some discs. He also had a stroke and the left side of his body was paralysed for almost 2 months but eventually, he recovered. In his life, he had to go through a total of 36 surgeries, but he never gave up. After four years of break, he came back with his band Aurthohin with a bang on 17 December 2021 in front of 35,000 people. Fans went crazy. People literally cried after seeing him performing again. Aurthohin became one of the most respected and popular bands in Bangladesh in 2022. He also released a single called 'Boyosh holo Amar'.
Sumon is an entrepreneur. He is the director of the Khaled Group of Companies. He is the director of over 20 well-known companies in Bangladesh. [8] He has a wife named Nazia Salehin Khaled (1996-present), who sang with him on his tribute album for John Denver. (Methopoth,shopner daar and bohudure). He has two children named Ahnaf Salehin Khaled and Aurora Salehin Khaled. Both of his children sang with him on his album Boka Manushta' when they were only 9 and 3 years old.[ citation needed ].He also has three siblings. Shamsul Arefin Khaled(elder brother, has been mentioned in some interviews), Saiful Arefin Khaled(younger brother) (wrote half of the hit "odbhut shei chheleti while thinking of Bassbaba, as per Kishor alo magazine, also wrote some other songs of Aurthohin, Shahina Khaled (sister). Black is the fourth studio album by Bangladeshi rock band Black. In 2009 Black announced on their official Facebook page that they had started to work on their fourth studio album and it would be a self-titled album. Work on the album properly started after Rafiqul Ahsan Titu (ex-Aashor) joined the band as the permanent bass player after Shahriar Shagor left the band. Black stated, they had plans to release the album on the Eid-ul-Azha of 2010, but due to other commitments of the band members and tight scheduling they were unable to succeed. After a few more changes of speculated release dates the band finally announced the official release date, August 21, 2011. According to the band, the album contains the heaviest possible music they have yet made. The first single off the album was "Aajo...", its music video premiered at YouTube in September 2011.
Warfaze is a Bangladeshi heavy metal band formed on 6 June 1984 in Dhaka by Ibrahim Ahmed Kamal, Meer, Helal, Naimul, and Bapi. They are one of the earliest heavy metal bands in Bangladesh. The band had numerous line-up changes since 1984 and since its inception, the band has released seven studio albums, one compilation album, and several singles. They have experimented with numerous sub-genres of rock and heavy metal over the years.
Ibrahim Ahmed Kamal is a Bangladeshi guitarist, songwriter and producer. He is the lead guitarist and the founder of the heavy metal band Warfaze. He has been the band's guitarist and composer for three decades.
Bangladeshi heavy metal or Bangla heavy metal was originated from the evolution of British and American heavy metal bands of the 1980s. Bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica and Megadeth have had the greatest influences on Bangladeshi heavy metal musicians. Other 1970s bands to influence are bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Motörhead. The first bands to play heavy metal in Bangladesh were bands like Warfaze and Rockstrata. The most prominent era for heavy metal movement was between the early 1990s to early 2000s. Warfaze, Rockstrata, Aces and in Dhaka are often considered as the "big four founders of heavy metal". Other 2000s metal bands are bands like Artcell, Aurthohin, Cryptic Fate, Powersurge, Mechanix, Metal Maze, Vibe and Stentorian. Alternative bands like Nemesis, Arbovirus and Black also played some alternative metal songs over the years. Warfaze, Artcell and Aurthohin together are the most popular rock/metal trio of Bangladesh.
Nagar Baul is a Bangladeshi rock band that was founded in Chittagong in 1977 by Kumar Bishwajit. The band is considered to be one of the pioneers of rock and blues music in the country. The frontman of the band, James, is referred to as the "Guru of Rock" as a mark of respect.
"Oniket Prantor" is the second album released by the Bangladeshi metal band Artcell. It was released on 1 April 2006, 4 years after the release of their first album, Onno Shomoy. The album has continued to soar in popularity with songs that became cult classics such as ‘Smriti Sharok’, ‘Shohid Sharoni’, ‘Dhushor Shomoy’. Sheikh Monirul Alam Tipu is a Bangladeshi musician, known as a rhythm composer, drummer, lyricist, and music producer. He is best known as the co-founder and Band Leader of Warfaze, a popular heavy metal and rock band from Bangladesh. Tipu has been with Warfaze for a year since its formation in 1986, providing drums play, percussion play, and rhythm composition for all eight of the band's music albums. He is also known for playing in the band “Pentagon” and “Winning” which garnered huge success. He served as the General Secretary of Bangladesh Musical Bands' Association (BAMBA) until November 2020 and has since held the position of Vice President which he still holds currently. He is also a Business Entrepreneur who is running an Advertising Agency named Carnival in Bangladesh. He was also the Partner & Production Director of Ektaar Music from 2001–2005. Later, he received an invitation from the National Skill Development Authority (NSDA) which is a Bangladesh government agency under the Prime Minister's Office responsible for developing policies to build a skilled force for different sectors of labor. In 2020 he started a record label called Loy Records which was launched officially in December 2021 with the prime intention to promote and cultivate young talents of the country whilst encouraging them to find their own path through music so they can represent their country internationally. On 10 December 2021, he started his new journey with his own record label called "Loyy Records"
