Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad. With the exception of 1904 and possibly the canceled 1916 Summer Olympics, sailing has always been included on the Olympic schedule. The Sailing program of 1996 consisted of a total of ten sailing classes (disciplines). For each class, with the exception of the Soling, eleven races were scheduled from July 22 to August 2, 1996 off the coast of Savannah at the Wassaw Sound. For the Soling ten fleetraces were scheduled followed by a series of matchraces for the top 6 boats of the fleetrace result.

Antonella Mularoni is a Sammarinese politician who was Captain Regent of San Marino from April 2013 until October 2013 and Secretary for Foreign Affairs. She was the Sammarinese judge for the European Court of Human Rights. She graduated in law from Bologna University.

The country's participation at London marked its thirteenth appearance in the Summer Olympics since its début at the 1960 Summer Olympics. The delegation sent by the Sammarinese National Olympic Committee consisted of four athletes: sprinter Martina Pretelli, archer Emanuele Guidi, trap shooter Alessandra Perilli and short-distance swimmer Clelia Tini.

Diego Mularoni is a Sammarinese former swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. He is a three-time Olympian, and a current Sammarinese record holder in the 100, 200, 400, and 1500 m freestyle since 2001. He has won a total of 13 medals at the Games of the Small States of Europe.

San Marino sent a delegation to compete at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia from 7 to 23 February 2014. This was the country's ninth appearance and the first time a woman was representing the nation at the Winter Olympics. The delegation consisted of three officials and two competitors, alpine skiers Vincenzo Michelotti and Federica Selva. Both of them took part in giant slalom races and were unranked in the competition. Michelotti was disqualified and Selva could not finish her race.
