Arun Gulab Gawli also known as Arun Gulab Ahir,is an Indian politician,underworld don and retired gangster. Gawli and his brother Kishor (Pappa) entered the Mumbai underworld in the 1970s,when they joined the "Byculla Company",a criminal gang led by Rama Naik and Babu Reshim,operating in the central Mumbai areas of Byculla,Parel and Saat Rasta. In 1988,after Rama Naik was killed in a police encounter,Gawli took over the gang and began operating it from his residence,Dagdi Chawl. Under his control,the gang controlled most criminal activities in the central Mumbai areas. Throughout the late eighties and nineties,Gawli's gang was involved in a power struggle with Dawood Ibrahim's D-Company gang. Gawli is also the founder of the Akhil Bharatiya Sena political party based in Maharashtra.

As of March 2023,the Uttar Pradesh Police had seized properties worth ₹11,684 crore (US$1.5 billion) belonging to Ahmed and his family. In 2019,he was convicted of kidnapping a witness who testified against him regarding the 2005 murder of his political rival Raju Pal. Ahmed remained in jail until his assassination by three gunmen on his way to a court-mandated medical checkup on 15 April 2023.

The Naroda Patiya massacre took place on 28 February 2002 at Naroda,in Ahmedabad,India,during the 2002 Gujarat riots. 97 Muslims were killed by a mob of approximately 5,000 people,organised by the Bajrang Dal,a wing of the Vishva Hindu Parishad,and allegedly supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party which was in power in the Gujarat State Government. The massacre at Naroda occurred during the bandh (strike) called by Vishwa Hindu Parishad a day after the Godhra train burning. The riot lasted over 10 hours,during which the mob plundered,stabbed,sexually assaulted,gang-raped and burnt people individually and in groups. After the conflict,a curfew was imposed in the state and Indian Army troops were called in to contain further violence.
Mer,Maher or Mehar is a caste from the Saurashtra region of Gujarat in India. They are largely based in the Porbandar district,comprising the low-lying,wetland Ghēḍ and highland Barḍā areas,and they speak a dialect of the Gujarati language. The Mers of the Ghēḍand Barḍā form two groups of the jāti and together they are the main cultivators in the Porbandar District. Historically,the men served the Porbandar State as a feudal militia,led by Mer leaders. In the 1881 Gazette of the Bombay Presidency,the Mers were recorded numbering at 23,850. The 1951 Indian Census recorded 50,000 Mers. As of 1980 there were estimated to be around 250,000 Mers.

Ritlal Yadav or Ritlal Ray is a leader of RJD who won the Bihar Legislative Council election in July 2015 as an independent candidate. Ritlal was in jail in connection with multiple criminal cases,including murder charges. Ritlal is accused in over 33 cases. He was a former Member of Legislative Council (MLC),the post,to which he was elected in 2016. He was incarcerated in Beur Jail until August 2020. However he was then released from the jail on bail. Ritlal Yadav defeated BJP's Asha Devi Sinha in the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections.

The criminal Ashok Mahto gang,which was active in the Indian state Bihar,was led by Ashok Mahto and included Pintu Mahto. Ashok Mahto and his gang were responsible for the 2005 killing of Rajo Singh,a sitting Member of Parliament. Ashok Mahto was imprisoned but escaped from Nawada jail in 2002. Pintu Mahto killed three police officers during the prison breakout. The gang's leaders are said to belong to either the Kurmi or Koeri caste,and were supported by the backward castes in the Nawada and Sheikhpura regions. The Mahto gang was waging a war of retribution against the exploitative upper-caste Bhumihars. Mahto and his gang were responsible for the killings of a large number of Forward Caste people in the late 1990s.
