The stone loach is a European species of fresh water ray-finned fish in the family Nemacheilidae. It is one of nineteen species in the genus Barbatula. Stone loaches live amongst the gravel and stones of fast flowing water where they can search for food. The most distinctive feature of this small fish is the presence of barbels around the bottom jaw, which they use to detect their invertebrate prey. The body is a mixture of brown, green and yellow.

Schistura mahnerti is a species of tropical freshwater fish of the stone loach family Nemacheilidae. It inhabits fast-flowing streams of Thailand and Myanmar (Burma). S. mahnerti is one of the more recent species to be introduced to the aquarium trade.
Schistura athos is a species of ray-finned fish in the stone loach genus Schistura, its specific name athos is from, Athos, one of the Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, as do that of two other Schistura species endemic to the Nam Ou basin, S. aramis and S.porthos. It has only been recorded from the Nam Ou basin in Laos, as well as from a stretch of the Nam Noua, a tributary of the Nam Ou, in Vietnam. S. athos has been collected from rapids and stretches of the main river with stone substrates.
Schistura geisleri is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus Schistura, the most speciose of the genera within the stone loach family, Nemacheilidae. Its known range is in the upper parts of the Chao Praya in Thailand but it has also been reported from the Tapi River in Peninsular Thailand, as it has not been recorded from the darainages between these two systems the taxonomic status of the Tapi population may need to be reassessed. Its habitat is slow flowing streams with depths no greater than 30 cm during the dry season and in shallow riffles with a substrate consisting of pebbles which are up to 5 cm in diameter, with a moderate current and clear water. The specific name honours the German aquarist Rolf Geisler (1925-2012), in thanks for his "valuable help".
Schistura huongensis is a species of ray-finned fish in the most speciose genus of the stone loach family Nemacheilidae, Schistura. It has been recorded from the drainage basins of the Perfume River and Cam Lo in central Vietnam. It can be found in the slack water upstream of riffles in medium-sized mountain rivers and streams with a fast current.
Schistura notostigma, the spotback loach, is a species of ray-finned fish in the genus Schistura, distributed in peninsula of India and Sri Lanka. Until 2017, it was thought to be the only species of Schistura stone loach found in Sri Lanka before a new species Schistura madhavai, was described.
Schistura prashadi is a species of ray-finned fish, a stone loach, in the genus Schistura. Some authorities place it in the genus Physoschistura It is known from just three localities in the Chindwin River drainage in Manipur, India. It is a benthic species of hill streams, preferring well oxygenated, clear, flowing water. The specific name honours Baini Prashad (1894-1969) who was an Assistant Superintendent at the Zoological Survey of India, who gave "every possible encouragement” to the describer of this species, Sunder Lal Hora.
Rhyacoschistura suber is a species of ray-finned fish, a stone loach, in the genus Rhyacoschistura. This species was originally described from three specimens collected among leaf litter in very shallow water in a small forest creek in the Nam Leuk drainage basin in Laos in 1997. These specimens were revealed to be juveniles and the species was re-described in 2019 on the basis of adult specimens. Based on the re-description, the species was moved from Schistura to the newly described genus, Rhyacoschistura.
Schistura vinciguerrae is a species of ray-finned fish, a stone loach, in the genus Schistura which is found in the Irrawaddy and Salween River basins in Myanmar, and the Chindwin drainage in Myanmar and Manipur, India. The specific name honours the Italian ichthyologist Decio Vinciguerra, who classified Burmese fishes and described the species, Schistura multifasciata, which S. vinciguerrae was separated from.
