Sea of Mirrors is the eleventh studio album by English rock band the Coral. It was released on 8 September 2023 through Run On and Modern Sky. The album was produced by Sean O'Hagan and features guest appearances by former member Bill Ryder-Jones, Cilian Murphy, John Simm and Love guitarist Johnny Echols.
Following the critical success of their 2021 double album Coral Island , the band was invited to record at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool for a final time before it was sold. By the time it was being closed, they realised that they had created material worth of two different albums, thematically. While one of them was "telling a story", the other felt more "dream-like", akin to a "stream-of-consciousness" type of writing. [1] As a result, Sea of Mirrors is set to be released alongside another studio album titled Holy Joe's Coral Island Medicine, which will only be released physically, not digitally. [2] The band announced both releases on 24 May 2023. [3] The Coral thought of Sea of Mirrors as a "kind of imaginary soundtrack to a 'lost' Spaghetti Western", citing the late composer Ennio Morricone as a main influence. The sound was described as Country rock through a "psychedelic lens". [1] In addition, the vibe of the record gives off "a sun-baked Morricone-esque flair" combined with the band's "signature merseyside sound". [4] Sea of Mirrors is seen as an attempt at crafting their own "surreal gun-slinging soundtrack". [5]
The lead single "Wild Bird" was released on 24 May, a song with "cinematic aspects" and a "thirst for melody". Lead singer James Skelly commented that once the album concept had been figured out, the song was written in about "five minutes", an imagining of a theme song for an Italian western "directed by Fellini with a Richard Yates-written script". [6] The second single and closing track of the album, "Oceans Apart", was released on 29 June, featuring a vocal cameo by actor Cilian Murphy, who is also fan of the band. The collaboration was suggested by producer Sean O'Hagan. Skelly revealed that the idea behind the song came from internal questions like "Where is my life?" or "How did I get here?". [7] A third single, "That's Where She Belongs", came out on 26 July. The song blends "subtle psych-pop aspects" with a familiar "folksy" sound. Skelly uncovered that he tried to capture the "beauty of the summer" with the song, using "some old tricks" in the process of the creating it. [8]

Sea of Mirrors received a score of 81 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on five critics' reviews, indicating "generally favorable" reception. [9] Uncut wrote that it "confirm[s] the band's Merseyside-'67 LA space-time portal, retracing familiar if melodically firm ground". [10]

Sessions were produced by the Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie, with co-production from the Coral; recording continued in-between tours of the United States and Europe, finishing in April 2003. Described as a pop rock and psychedelic pop release, Magic and Medicine was compared to the work of the Animals, with frontman James Skelly's vocals recalling that band's frontman Eric Burdon.
Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker is a mini album and third studio album by English rock band the Coral, released on 26 January 2004 by Deltasonic. The Coral began writing the record less than a month after releasing their second studio album, Magic and Medicine (2003). Recording for the album took place over 12 days at Bryn Derwen Studios in Wales with producer Ian Broudie, frontman for the Lightning Seeds; the Coral served as co-producers. Described as a lo-fi neo-psychedelia release, Nightfreak is a concept album about German tennis player Boris Becker.
William Edward Ryder-Jones is an English singer-songwriter, musician, music producer and composer from West Kirby, Merseyside. He co-founded the band The Coral, together with James Skelly, Lee Southall, Paul Duffy, and Ian Skelly, playing as their lead guitarist from 1996 until 2008. He has since pursued a solo career, writing both his own albums and film scores, as well as producing records for other artists and appearing as a session musician.

During the promotional cycle for their third studio album The Invisible Invasion (2005), guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones left and subsequently re-joined the band. Recording for their next album occurred between August 2006 and February 2007 at three different studios, Wheeler End, Konk, and RAK. Craig Silvey and the band co-produced the majority of the material, aside from two songs that were produced by Ian Broudie. Described as a psychedelic rock and pop album, Roots & Echoes took influences from doo wop and R&B.

The album was produced by John Leckie, whose previous collaborators include The Stone Roses and Radiohead. and was recorded at RAK studios in London as well as Rockfield in South Wales. It was released on 12 July 2010 to great critical acclaim. The album was recorded through a two-year span where the band road-tested the material. This is The Coral's first album without Bill Ryder-Jones, who departed in 2008. It peaked at #16 in the UK Album Charts but has since been a consistent seller for Deltasonic Records. The single, "1000 Years", reached #188 on the UK Singles Chart.

Coral Island is the tenth studio album by English rock band the Coral. Run On Records and Modern Sky UK released it on 30 April 2021. During the cycle for their ninth studio album Move Through the Dawn (2018), the band began stockpiling song ideas; on the way home from Blackpool, the band had the idea of making a concept album about a fictional town. With the assistance of Edwin Burdis, the band began mapping out the album. The recording sessions were held at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, with the narration recorded at Ian Murrary's house in Merseyside; the band and Chris Taylor acted as producers. Described as a psychedelic album, it drew comparison to the Kinks' Village Green Preservation Society (1968), while the narration was reminiscent of that heard on the Small Faces' Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake (1968).
The Lathums are an English indie rock band from Wigan, Greater Manchester. They are formed of singer/songwriter and guitarist Alex Moore, lead guitarist Scott Concepcion, bassist Matty Murphy and drummer Ryan Durrans, and are managed by Alfie Skelly. They were created by The Music Project, a stage school specialising in music, art, games and media, in April 2018 after their tutor placed them in the same project group, and within a year they signed with Island Records. They released their debut album, How Beautiful Life Can Be, on 24 September 2021. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart on 1 October 2021.
One Man Band is the fifth studio album by English musician Miles Kane, released on 4 August 2023 by Modern Sky. It was written by Kane in late 2022 on guitar mainly in Northern England. It was produced between December 2022 and January in Liverpool by Kane's cousin and The Coral's frontman, James Skelly, alongside guest musicians including Tom Ogden. The album artwork, is a black and white picture that depicts Kane looking outside a window.
