Magic and Medicine is the second studio album by English rock band the Coral. It was released on 28 July 2003, through Deltasonic. Within three months of releasing their self-titled debut studio album, the band began recording material for their next album in October 2002. Sessions were produced by the Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie, with co-production from the Coral; recording continued in-between tours of the United States and Europe, finishing in April 2003. Described as a pop rock and psychedelic pop release, Magic and Medicine was compared to the work of the Animals, with frontman James Skelly's vocals recalling that band's frontman Eric Burdon.
"Don't Think You're the First" served as the lead single from Magic and Medicine, released on 3 March 2003. The Coral toured the following month, and then performed at the Midsummer Night's Scream and Glastonbury Festivals. "Pass It On" was released as the second single on 14 July 2003, which was followed by further festivals appearances, at International de Benicassim and V Festival, and a supporting slot for Blur on their European tour. The album's third and fourth singles, "Secret Kiss" and "Bill McCai", were released on 6 October 2003 and 24 November 2003, respectively; the latter coincided with a UK tour in the same month.
Magic and Medicine received generally favourable reviews from music critics, with some finding it an improvement over the Coral's debut album. It topped the charts in both Scotland and the UK, while also charting in Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden. The album was later certified gold in the UK, while "Pass It On" was certified silver. All four of the album's singles reached the top 30 in both Scotland and the UK, with "Pass It On" reaching the highest at number five in both territories.
The Coral released their self-titled debut studio album in July 2002, through Deltasonic; it charted at number five in the United Kingdom, where it was subsequently certified gold. [1] [2] [3] Its two singles – "Goodbye" and "Dreaming of You" – became top 30 hits in both the UK and Scotland, with the latter reaching number 13 in the UK. [3] The album was promoted with three tours of the UK, including a co-headlining one with the Music, as well as performances at the Isle of Wight and V Festivals. [4] Following a period at home, the band opted to make an album relating to "where we lived; the dark side of small town life. Street parties, silver tea-sets, secret suicides". [5] By October 2002, they were recording material for it; Ian Broudie of the Lightning Seeds as the main producer, with co-production from the band, and Jon Gray acting as engineer. Seven backing tracks were made over the course of five days at Elevator Studios in Liverpool. [6] [7]
After this, the Coral went on a tour of the UK, before returning to the studio later in the month. [7] In early 2003, the band supported Supergrass on their tour of the United States, which featured appearances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Last Call with Carson Daly , and then went to Europe. [7] [8] Following the conclusion of tour, the band held further recording sessions, having recorded up to 35 songs by this point. [7] [9] The Coral were due to embark on a tour of the UK in February 2003; however, guitarist Lee Southall suffered from tendonitis. [10] [11] As a result of this, Broudie played rhythm guitar on "Pass It On". [12] Deltasonic co-founder Alan Wills remarked that the band did not record any single-sounding songs, prompting them to record two songs from earlier in their career, "Bill McCai" and "Pass It On". [13] The album was finished by April 2003; it was mastered by Gary Butler at RST Onestop in Prescot, Merseyside. [6] [14]
Musically, the sound of Magic and Medicine has been described as pop rock, [15] and psychedelic pop, [16] [17] compared to the work of the Animals, with frontman James Skelly's vocals recalling the Animals frontman Eric Burdon. [18] Keyboardist Nick Power said they wanted the album to be more "organic [... with] a strong acoustic vibe", in contrast to the "really spontaneous" self-titled album. [19] Skelly wrote over half of the album, with the reminder co-written with Power or guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones; "Eskimo Lament" was written solely by Power. Additional musicians appeared on the recordings: Louis Baccino with a flute on "Don't Think You're the First"; Megan Childs of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci with a violin on "Milkwood Blues"; Martin Smith, Simon James and Andy Frizell with brass on "Eskimo Lament" and "Confessions of A.D.D.D."; Ollie Brindley with double bass on "All of Our Love"; and Andy Brindley with a harmonica on "All of Our Love". The opening track, "In the Forest", begins with Power's organ, setting a darker mood for the rest of the album. [18] Skelly said the chorus lyrics were adapted from a Woody Guthrie track; bassist Paul Duffy said his part was influenced by the work of the Beach Boys. [20] [21] "Don't Think You're the First" begins similar to songs by the Doors, with a key change during the middle section, accompanied by a melodica, before leading into dub reggae. [22] [23] The title was inspired from an occasion where Skelly played what he thought was a new chord shape. [24] While Duffy said it influenced by a song by Nat King Cole, the rest of the band said the music was a homage to the sound of Joe Meek, with guitarist Lee Southall using part of his instrument to make Meek-like percussion. [25] [26] [27] "Liezah" is an acoustic song, with a melody evoking Belle and Sebastian, that talks about a character that was influenced by The Sun Also Rises (1926) by Ernest Hemingway. [18] [22] [28] Power and Skelly wrote it while they were travelling to Birmingham. shortly after Ryder-Jones showed Skelly how to play a Simon & Garfunkel track on guitar. [28] [29] The band compared the Moby Grape-indebted "Talkin' Gypsy Market Blues" to work of Cheech & Chong and "Motorpsycho Nitemare" (1964) by Bob Dylan. [30] [31] Skelly wrote it after he bought a pair of boots from a gypsy market while holidaying with his girlfriend in Portugal. [32] "Secret Kiss" is a slower song with an organ part in the vein of the Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and a clipping guitar riff styled after Pink Floyd. [22] [23] It came about after listening to the Chordettes, Love and ballroom music, with one of the lyrics being directly take from "Soft Sands" (1957) by the Chordettes. [33] [34]
"Milkwood Blues", which includes jazz breakdowns and ends with a violin, discusses being in a small town while tripping on acid. [15] [22] [35] It features Wills reading from Under Milk Wood (1954) by Thomas. [36] "Bill McCai" is an upbeat folk rock song about a sad middle-aged man who dies by its conclusion. [18] The track, which pre-dated their debut album, was initially passed on when Ian Skelly thought it sounded closer to Travis. [13] "Eskimo Lament" features gentle piano, plucked guitarwork and a trumpet; Power said he wanted it to have a "funeral procession feel", attempting to emulate "I'm Only Sleeping" (1966) by the Beatles and "Rockin' Chair" (1969) by the Band. [22] [37] With the ballad "Careless Hands", which sees James Skelly's voice recall Lee Mavers of the La's, Skelly wanted to compose a track that "Jonny Mathis could sing". [22] [38] "Pass It On" is an acoustic song that sees Skelly discussing his mortality, with a melody reminiscent of Paul McCartney. [18] He had written the song when he was 17 year-old while on a train visiting Power. [39] Power said "All of Our Love" recalled "I Won't Hurt You" (1966) by the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. [40] The closing track, "Confessions of A.D.D.D.", is a love song, akin to the works of the Super Furry Animals. [18] [22] It is a homage to Arthur Lee of Love, and ends with a three minute extended jam section. [15] [41] The "A.D.D.D." part of the title, which stands for A Damp Dog Day, was spoken by Deltasonic co-founder Joe Fearon; Power theorised that it related to the film Dog Day Afternoon (1975). [42] [43] Skelly said the lyrics were inspired from a book he owned about pirates. [44]
"Don't Think You're the First" was released as the lead single from Magic and Medicine on 3 March 2003. [45] Two versions were released on CD in the UK: the first with "Witchcraft", "See-Through Bergerac", and the music video for "Don't Think You're the First", while the second featured "Tiger Lily" and "Teenage Machine Age". [46] [47] The "Don't Think You're the First" video was filmed in a forest close to where the members lived. [48] The Coral's February 2003 UK trek was rescheduled for April and May 2003, with support from the Basement. [49] In June 2003, the band headlined A Midsummer Night's Scream festival in their hometown, and then performed at that year's Glastonbury Festival. [50] [51] "Pass It On" was released as a single on 14 July 2003. [52] The CD version included "Run Run" and an acoustic version of "Shadows Falls"; the DVD version featured the videos for "Pass It On", an acoustic version of "Calendars and Clocks", "Heartaches and Pancakes", and The Curry File Documentary. [53] [54] For the "Pass It On" music video, the band were in the middle of touring with Supergrass when they stopped off at a ghost town near Randsburg, California. [55] They contacted Wills, who promptly booked director James Slater, flying him out the following day. [56] Part of the video was filmed inside a shack owned by Jenny Olsen, who can be seen in it dancing around ram skulls. [57] [58]
Originally scheduled for release on 21 July 2003 under the name Matrix Farm, Magic and Medicine was eventually released a week later on 28 July 2003. [14] [59] The Japanese edition included "When Good Times Go Bad" and "Boys at the Window" as extra tracks. [60] In August 2003, the band appeared at the International de Benicassim and V Festivals. [61] Following this, they toured across Europe supporting Blur. [62] "Secret Kiss" was released as a single on 6 October 2003. [63] Two versions were released on CD in the UK: the first with "Who's That Knockin'", "See My Love", and the music video for "Secret Kiss", while the second included "God Knows" and "Not the Girl". [64] [65] The "Secret Kiss" video was filmed in alleyways and local social clubs; the band said it starred "belly dancers, ballroom dancers, monks gowns and an Alsatian", which they considered it to be akin to the Rolling Thunder Revue, "but in a retirement town". [66] "Bill McCai" was released as a single on 24 November 2003. [67] Two versions were released on CD in the UK: the first with "Boy at the Window", "Nosferatu", and the music video for "Bill McCai", while the second featured "When the Good Times Go Bad" and "From a Leaf to a Tree". [68] [69] The "Bill McCai" music video was filmed in Amsterdam the previous month. Magic and Medicine was met with generally favourable from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 76, based on 18 reviews. [73]
In a review for Entertainment Weekly , Greg Kot wrote that it lacked "the self-titled debut's exhilarating peaks," though found Magic and Medicine to be "more consistent." [76] NME 's Ted Kessler said it was "[n]ot quite" a landmark album, "[i]t is still, nevertheless, a quite dazzling album." [79] AllMusic reviewer Tim DiGravina wrote that the Coral "rein in their influences and just stick with the program of creating rocking tunes." He added that the "songwriting, playing, and production are so subtle," Magic and Medicine comes across as a "mature, solid throwback." [74] Blender writer Dorian Lynskey said it was "more mature, more focused and a little less fun" than their debut. [75]
In a review for Rolling Stone , Jenny Eliscu wrote that with a number of the "flower-power rockers" the Coral imitate, they "seem to have run out of material after they recorded their debut." She added that Magic and Medicine "is little more than mimicry and affectation", taking from "the playbooks of true Sixties weirdos", such as Love and the Seeds. [82] Pitchfork contributor Neil Robertson noted the "frenetic freakout leanings" of their debut had been removed "in favor of a more humble approach", with more emphasis on the song writing, "[i]t all sounds far less interesting." [80] David Peschek of The Guardian referred to the album as "an ultimately frustrating piece of work", while "more often than not this music feels like a tasteful collection of lovely sounds rather than songs." [77]
Magic and Medicine topped the chart in the UK and Scotland. [3] [84] It also reached number four in Ireland, [85] number 20 in Norway, [86] number 39 in the Wallonia region of Belgium, [87] number 43 in New Zealand, [88] number 60 in Sweden, [89] number 64 in France, [90] number 69 in Japan, [91] and number 99 in Germany. [92] "Don't Think You're the First" reached number ten in the UK, and number 11 in Scotland. [3] [93] "Pass It On" reached number five in the UK and Scotland, [3] [94] and was certified silver by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) in 2024. The Coral are an English rock band, formed in 1996 in Hoylake on the Wirral Peninsula, Merseyside. The band emerged during the early 2000s. Their 2002 debut album The Coral, from which came the single "Dreaming of You", was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and listed as the fourth best album of the year by NME. Their second album, Magic and Medicine (2003), produced four UK Top 20 singles, including "Pass It On". In 2008, after guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones left the band, they continued as a five-piece.
Up at the Lake is the eighth album by the British alternative rock band The Charlatans, released on 17 May 2004 through Universal and Island Records Group. As promotion wrapped up for their seventh album Wonderland (2001), Universal wanted them to follow it up with another one quickly. However, frontman Tim Burgess began working on his debut solo album in late 2002. At the end of the year, the band reconvened to write songs; by March 2003, they relocated to their own studio, Big Mushroom in Cheshire, Greater Manchester with them and James Spencer serving as producers. Recording halted in May 2003 to allow for Burgess to finish on his album, I Believe (2003); sessions would resume by the end of the year, and finish in February 2004. Up at the Lake is a pop rock album that pursues the country rock direction that they had first explored on their sixth album Tellin' Stories (1997).

The Coral began writing the record less than a month after releasing their second studio album, Magic and Medicine (2003). Recording for the album took place over 12 days at Bryn Derwen Studios in Wales with producer Ian Broudie, frontman for the Lightning Seeds; the Coral served as co-producers. Described as a lo-fi neo-psychedelia release, Nightfreak is a concept album about German tennis player Boris Becker.
The Invisible Invasion is the fourth studio album by English rock band the Coral. It was released on 23 May 2005, through Deltasonic. Following on from the stop-gap release of the mini album Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker (2004), the band began recording their next album with Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley of Portishead as producers. Sessions were mainly held at Monnow Valley Studio, with additional recording being done at Elevator Studios. Described as a psychedelia album, it had more of a stripped-down sound compared to their past releases.
Out of Nothing is the fourth studio album by English rock band Embrace. It was released on 13 September 2004 through the label Independiente. Following the release of their third studio album If You've Never Been (2001), the band were dropped by Hut Records; around this time, the general public had lost interest in them. After signing to Independiente, they took time working on new material, until early 2004, when they recorded their next album at Olympic Studios in London with producer Martin "Youth" Glover. Out of Nothing is an indie rock album that drew comparison to the works of Coldplay and Keane.

Faded Seaside Glamour is the debut studio album by English rock band Delays, released on 5 April 2004 through Rough Trade Records. After the end of their previous band Corky, the members formed Delays; lead singer Greg Gilbert recruited his brother Aaron, a keyboardist, into the band after hearing him play a loop. The band signed to Rough Trade Records after its founder Geoff Travis saw them perform live. Delays recorded the album in three months with producers Duncan Lewis and Graham Sutton at Rockfield Studios in Rockfield, Monmouthshire, Dustsucker Sound in Hackney, London, and Moles Studio in Bath, Somerset. Faded Seaside Glamour is an indie pop and dream pop album that has been compared to the works of Cocteau Twins, Geneva and The La's, and Greg Gilbert's vocals have been compared to those of Stevie Nicks and Elizabeth Fraser.
You See Colours is the second studio album by British rock band Delays, released on 6 March 2006 through Rough Trade Records. The band released their debut studio album Faded Seaside Glamour in early 2004; by the year's end, they had composed 40 songs for its follow-up. Because the band's keyboardist Aaron Gilbert lost the only copies of their demos, lead singer Greg Gilbert decided to let the other members contribute to the writing. You See Colours was recorded at studios Real World, Rockfield, and Dustsucker Sound with producer Graham Sutton. Focusing on indie rock and pop songs, You See Colours spotlights Gilbert's vocals.
Roots & Echoes is the fifth studio album by English rock band the Coral. It was released on 6 August 2007, through Deltasonic. During the promotional cycle for their third studio album The Invisible Invasion (2005), guitarist Bill Ryder-Jones left and subsequently re-joined the band. Recording for their next album occurred between August 2006 and February 2007 at three different studios, Wheeler End, Konk, and RAK. Craig Silvey and the band co-produced the majority of the material, aside from two songs that were produced by Ian Broudie. Described as a psychedelic rock and pop album, Roots & Echoes took influences from doo wop and R&B.
St. Jude is the debut studio album by English rock band the Courteeners, released on 7 April 2008 by Polydor Records. There is also a special edition album which includes a second disc of acoustic versions of songs which feature on the actual album. Although the album was released to mixed reviews from critics, it has become a somewhat cult success though many fans are more favorable to the versions of songs seen on Here Come the Young Men EP and various other demos. In support of the album the band embarked on a European tour.
Miles Peter Kane is an English singer and musician, best known as a solo artist and the co-frontman of the Last Shadow Puppets. He was also the former frontman of the Rascals, before the band announced their break-up in August 2009.
Butterfly House is the sixth full-length studio album by English indie rock band The Coral. The album was produced by John Leckie, whose previous collaborators include The Stone Roses and Radiohead. and was recorded at RAK studios in London as well as Rockfield in South Wales. It was released on 12 July 2010 to great critical acclaim. The album was recorded through a two-year span where the band road-tested the material. This is The Coral's first album without Bill Ryder-Jones, who departed in 2008. It peaked at #16 in the UK Album Charts but has since been a consistent seller for Deltasonic Records. The single, "1000 Years", reached #188 on the UK Singles Chart.
Love Undercover is the debut studio album by English rock group James Skelly & The Intenders. It was released on 3 June 2013, on Skeleton Key Records and Cooking Vinyl and reached No. 85 on the UK Albums Chart.
Catfish and the Bottlemen is a British indie rock band formed in Llandudno, Conwy, Wales, in 2007. The band's debut album, The Balcony, reached number 10 in the UK Albums Chart and achieved Platinum status on 30 December 2016. The band have toured in South America, Japan, UK, Europe, North America, and Australia performing a wide selection of festivals including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Latitude, Falls Festival, Community Festival, Reading and Leeds, T in the Park, Governors Ball, All Points East, Bonnaroo, Splendour in the Grass, and TRNSMT. They won a Brit Award for British Breakthrough Act on 24 February 2016. On 27 May 2016, they released their second album, The Ride, which reached number 1 in the UK Albums Chart and has sold 300,000 units in the UK since its release. On 26 April 2019, they released their third album, The Balance, which reached number 2 in the UK Albums Chart. The band will be headlining the Reading and Leeds festivals in the UK in 2024.
Distance Inbetween is the eighth studio album by the English indie rock band The Coral. It's their first album after a five-year hiatus, their first without guitarist Lee Southall and also the first with Southall's replacement, Paul Molloy. The album was released on 4 March 2016. The first single, "Chasing the Tail of a Dream", was released on 26 December 2015.
Move Through the Dawn is the ninth studio album by English rock band the Coral. It was released on 10 August 2018, under Ignition Records.
Coral Island is the tenth studio album by English rock band the Coral. Run On Records and Modern Sky UK released it on 30 April 2021. During the cycle for their ninth studio album Move Through the Dawn (2018), the band began stockpiling song ideas; on the way home from Blackpool, the band had the idea of making a concept album about a fictional town. With the assistance of Edwin Burdis, the band began mapping out the album. The recording sessions were held at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool, with the narration recorded at Ian Murrary's house in Merseyside; the band and Chris Taylor acted as producers. Described as a psychedelic album, it drew comparison to the Kinks' Village Green Preservation Society (1968), while the narration was reminiscent of that heard on the Small Faces' Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake (1968).
