Shai Kakon (also Shay Kakon; Hebrew: שי קקון; born 5 November 2002) is an Israeli Olympic sailor. [1] [2] She was the 2017 European Laser 4.7 Youth U16 Girl Champion, and World silver medalist. She was then the 2019 Youth Sailing World Championship Laser Radial Girls silver medalist. She competed for Israel at the 2020 Summer Olympics. She won the 2022 European U21 Championship. Kakon represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in sailing in Sailing/Laser Radial in Marseille, France, in which she came in 24th.
Her club is the Sdot Yam Sailing Club in Israel. [5] As a child, Kakon began sailing with the Optimist model. [6] Her coach is Erez Eliyahu. [7]
At the 2017 Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships, Kakon won the U16 silver medal, in Nieuwpoort, Belgium. [8] She won the gold medal in the 2017 European Laser 4.7 Youth Championships, becoming the new U16 European Girl champion, in Los Alcázares, Spain. [9]
At the 2018 Laser Radial (ILCA 6) Youth European Championships Women's U17, Kakon won the silver medal, in Balatonfoldvar, Hungary. [10] [11]
In the 2019 Youth Sailing World Championship – Laser Radial Girls, she won a bronze medal in Gdynia, Poland. [12] [3]
Kakon represented Israel at the 2020 Summer Olympics in August 2021, at 19 years of age, competing in Laser Radial. [4] She placed 30th overall, and therefore missed the final round. She placed second in the 9th race, and fifth in the 10th race. [2] [13] [14] [4]
In 2022 she became the European U21 Champion, winning the 2022 ILCA U21 European Championships in Lac d'Hourtin-Carcans, France, ahead of Marilena Makri of Cyprus in a race with 61 competitors. [15] [16] At the 2022 Youth World Championships in Gdynia, Poland, Kakon won the bronze medal. [17]
In February 2024 at the 2024 ILCA 6 Women European Championships & Open European Trophy/PARIS2024 Olympic qualification in Athens, Greece, Kakon came in 16th. [18] She won the fifth race. [18]
Kakon represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in sailing in Sailing/Laser Radial, in Marseille, France, in which she came in 24th. [19]
The Laser is a class of single-handed, one-design sailing dinghies using a common hull design with three interchangeable rigs of different sail areas, appropriate to a given combination of wind strength and crew weight. Ian Bruce and Bruce Kirby designed the Laser in 1970 with an emphasis on simplicity and performance.
The Laser Radial or ILCA 6 is a popular one-design class of small sailing dinghy, originally built by Laser Performance. It is a singlehanded boat, meaning that it is sailed by one person. The Laser Radial is a variant of the Laser Standard, with shorter mast and reduced sail area, allowing light sailors to sail in heavy winds. It raced by women, U18 men and by male masters. The International Class is recognised by World Sailing.

The ILCA 4 World Championships, until 2020 the Laser 4.7 World Championships, have been held every year since 2002, organized by the International Sailing Federation. The event is open to sailors under the age of 18.
Philipine van Aanholt is a female sailor from Curaçao, competing mainly in the Laser Radial class. She is a two-time Women World Champion in non-Olympic classes. In 2008 and 2009 she was chosen Curaçao's Youth Sports Women of the year. After the National Olympic Committee of the Netherlands Antilles lost its recognition by the International Olympic Committee following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010, van Aanholt was allowed to participate in the 2012 Summer Olympics as an Independent Olympic Athlete. In 2016, she represented neighboring island Aruba at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She was Aruba's flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the 2015 Pan American Games. In 2023, she won silver in the Sunfish class at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
The Women's ILCA 6 World Championship, until 2020 the Women's Laser Radial World Championship, has been held every year since 1980, organised by the International Sailing Federation. Laser Radial is an Olympic sailing class. The event was held together with the Men's Laser Radial World Championships between 1989 and 2010.
