Shamsul Ulama Islamic Academy is an Islamic educational institution in Kerala, India, established by the SKSSF Wayanad District Committee under the presidency of late District Qasi Panakkad Sayed Umerali Shihab Thangal in the year 2002 to promote Islamic educational activities. SUIA is managed by president Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal Panakkad.

Panakkad Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal was a sayyid (thangal) community leader and religious scholar from Kerala, southern India who was the Kerala State President and Chairman, National Political Advisory Committee, Indian Union Muslim League from 2009 to 2022. He was also the Vice President of the Samastha Kerala Jam'iyyat al-'Ulama', the principal Sunni-Shafi'i scholarly body in Kerala.

The Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama, 1926–1989, was the principal Sunni-Shafi'i scholarly body in northern Kerala. Most of the ordinary Sunnis of Kerala, adhering to Shafi'i Law, largely followed the Ulama. A forty-member 'mushawara' was the high command body of the Sunni council. The council administered thousands of Shafi'ite mosques, madrasas and Arabic Colleges.

Until his death in the early 1970s, Bafaqi Thangal remained the most prominent Muslim political leader in Kerala. He is generally credited with transforming the perception of Indian Union Muslim League inside Kerala.

Shaikh Basheer Ahmed Muhyiddin

Sheikh Basheer Ahmed Muhuyiddin, Arabic: الشيخ بشير احمد محي الدين) is an Islamic scholar, preacher, and author. He was born in 1937 at his hometown of Paravanna in Malapuram district. He was the third son of the famous scholar and Muslim personality, Paravanna Muhyaddeen Musliyar. He pursued his primary education from Darul Uloom Vazhakkad and at Baqiyath Swalihath,vellur. He pursued his higher education by studying abroad and finished his post graduation at Al-Azhar University, Cairo and then at Elorin University, Nigeria. While working at Darul Ifta of Saudi Arabia, he was appointed as first official of its propagation center to African countries in Nigeria. A significant portion of his life and work was spent translating the Qur'an into three Nigerian languages, Hausa, Yoruba and Ibo, and the English translation “Quran: the Living Truth". Apart from these major contributions, Sheikh Basheer has written numerous Islamic books, notable among which is the Islamic Religious Knowledge series including Quran, Hadeeth, Fiqh and Islamic History. He died on 25 June 2005.

S. M. Muhammad Sheriff was an Indian politician and former Member of Parliament elected from Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Periyakulam constituency as an Indian Union Muslim League candidate in the 1971 election. S.M Muhammed Sheriff, a.k.a. 'Madurai Sheriff Sahib'. A charismatic and prominent Indian Union Muslim League leader groomed by Quaid-e-Millath Muhammad Ismail Sahib. He was a zealous social worker, professor, lawyer and a politician. The first elected Muslim League MP from Tamil Nadu in independent India. He produced clear documentary evidences that Kachchatheevu belonged to India and spoke vehemently in Parliament that it should not be ceded to Sri Lanka and the consequences in such a turn of event. During Emergency rule in Smt. Indira Gandhi's period, he was the advisor to the Governor on the legislation of Tamil Nadu. He gave moral lectures to prisoners in jails and arranged for Jumma prayers to be conducted regularly in Madurai Central Prison. He was a close associate of Sayyid Abdur Rahman Bafaqi Thangal, C. H. Mohammed Koya, Panakkad Shihab Thangal, Ebrahim Sulaiman Sait, G.M.Banatwalla, A.K.Rifayee & Siraj-ul-Millath Abdul Sammad, and the bosom friend of Nagore E.M.Hanifa, Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed and B. S. Abdur Rahman. He was a powerful speaker in many Indian languages. As Propaganda Secretary of the IUML, he strengthened, expanded and ignited the spirit of the league from grass-root level. The most fondly remembered personality for his honesty, simplicity, philanthropy and secularism.
