Shane Patrick Ryan [1] (born 27 January 1994) is an American-born swimmer who competes internationally for Ireland.

Career

Ryan was a 16-time All-American and 11-time All-State honoree as a swimmer for Haverford Senior High School. [2] He was a member of the US National Junior Team in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

Ryan initially competed at the US Olympics trials in 2012, finishing in 28th, which did not qualify him for the US team. He subsequently switched his allegiance to Ireland. Ryan qualified to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics by swimming under the Olympic Qualifying time in the 100m backstroke at the Swim Ulster Dave McCullagh Meet in March 2016. [3]

College

Ryan competed collegiately for Penn State where he set school records in the 50 meter freestyle, 100 meter freestyle and 100 meter backstroke. He won Big Ten Conference championships in the 100 meter backstroke in 2014 and 2015 and the 100 meter freestyle in 2014. [1]

International Swimming League

In spring 2020, Ryan signed to the Toronto Titans, for their inaugural season; the first Canadian-based professional swim team.

World Championships

In December 2018, Ryan won the bronze medal in the 50m backstroke at the 2018 World Short Course Swimming Championships. [4]

At the 2016 Olympics, he made it out of the heats of the 100m backstroke to qualify for the semi-finals with a personal-best time of 53.85. [5] He finished in last place in the semifinal.

Other

In September 2017 at the 2017 University Games, Ryan won the Gold Medal in the 50m backstroke. [6]

In August 2018 at the 2018 European Championships, Ryan took bronze in the 50 m backstroke. [7]

Personal life

Ryan's father, Thomas, emigrated from Portarlington, County Laois, in the 1980s; Ryan has Irish citizenship through him and can therefore swim under the Irish flag. [8] His mother, Mary Beth Bonner, is also of Irish descent and won the Miss Mayo pageant in 1986. [9] Ryan was raised in Havertown, Pennsylvania, and graduated with a degree in sports management at Penn State University.

Hannah Russell, is a British Paralympic swimmer competing in S12 classification events. In 2012, she became British S12 champion in the 100m backstroke and qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games where she won a silver in the 400m freestyle and a bronze in the 100m butterfly. In the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games, she won the gold medal in the 100m backstroke with the time of 1:06:06 earning her the World Record.

Apostolos Christou is a Greek swimmer specializing in backstroke. He is the Greek National Record holder in the 100 metre freestyle and 50, 100, and 200 metre backstroke events, as well as contributing to national record efforts in the 4x100 metre freestyle and medley relays. He is a three-time olympian, qualifying in 2016, 2021, and most recently 2024, where he became Greece's first olympic medalist in swimming since the inaugural 1896 games through his 2nd place finish in the 200 metre backstroke.

He holds the U.S. Open record in the long course 100 meter freestyle and three world records in short course relay events. At the 2016 Summer Olympics he won a gold medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay, swimming in both the prelims and the final of the event. In 2021, he won silver medals in the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter freestyle at the 2021 World Short Course Championships. Tucker Dupree is an American swimmer. He won three medals at the 2012 Paralympic Games and one at the 2016 Paralympic Games. He has also set multiple world and American records in swimming. He competes in the Paralympic classes S12/SB12/SM12.

Nicole Turner, of Portarlington, Laois, is an Irish para-swimmer, competing mainly in the S6, short stature category.

Claire Curzan is an American competitive swimmer and Olympian. Specialising in multiple events, she earned an Olympic silver medal in the 4×100 meter medley relay in the 2020 Summer Olympics by swimming the preliminary butterfly leg. She holds junior world records in the long course 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter butterfly and the short course 50 meter butterfly and 100 meter butterfly. Shaine Casas is an American professional swimmer. He is an Americas record holder in the short course 4×50 meter medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg of the relay. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, he won the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke, a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke, and placed seventh in the 50-meter backstroke. In 2022, at the year's World Aquatics Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke. Later in the year, at the 2022 World Short Course Championships, he won the silver medal in the 200-metre backstroke and placed fourth in the finals of the 100-meter individual medley and 200-meter individual medley.

Coleman Stewart is a retired American swimmer. He is the current world record holder in the short course 100 meter backstroke. At the 2019 World University Games, he won a gold medal as part of the 4×100 metre medley relay, swimming backstroke in the prelims heats, and a bronze medal in the 100 meter butterfly. He competed in the International Swimming League as part of the Cali Condors.
