Sharon Denise Dixon (born December 11,1962) is an American politician who represented the 24th Ward on the Chicago City Council from 2007 to 2011. In 2010 Dixon was a candidate in the Democratic Party primary for the United States House of Representatives in Illinois's 7th congressional district.
Dixon grew up in the Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago and graduated from Manley High School in 1980. She earned a BA in Criminal Justice from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1985. [1]
Prior to entering politics,Dixon worked in various capacities for Cook County Hospital,American Airlines,General Electric,Northwestern Memorial Hospital,and Ada S. McKinley Community Services. She left working to campaign for alderman. In the February 27,2007 municipal election,Dixon finished second in a field of seven candidates;she won by 192 votes in a run-off on April 17. Alderman Dixon was sworn into office on May 21,2007. In 2008,she ran for 24th Ward Committeeman and won with 78 percent of the vote. [2]
In 2010,three years into her first (four-year) term as alderman,Dixon challenged incumbent congressman Danny K. Davis in the Democratic primary. [3]
In 2011,she was defeated in a run-off election against Michael D. Chandler.
Carol Elizabeth Moseley Braun,also sometimes Moseley-Braun,is an American diplomat,politician,and lawyer who represented Illinois in the United States Senate from 1993 to 1999. Prior to her Senate tenure,Moseley Braun was a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1979 to 1988 and served as Cook County Recorder of Deeds from 1988 to 1992. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992 after defeating Senator Alan J. Dixon in a Democratic primary. Moseley Braun served one term in the Senate and was defeated by Republican Peter Fitzgerald in 1998.
Daniel K. Davis is an American politician who is the U.S. representative from Illinois's 7th congressional district,elected in 1996. The district serves much of western Chicago,as well as the Loop. It also includes several of Chicago's inner western suburbs,such as Bellwood,Oak Park,and River Forest. Davis is a Democrat,a member of the Congressional Black Caucus,and a former member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
David Duvall Orr is an American Democratic politician who served as the Cook County Clerk from 1990 to 2018. Orr previously served as alderman for the 49th ward in Chicago City Council from 1979 to 1990. He briefly served as acting Mayor of Chicago from November 25 to December 2,1987,following the death of Mayor Harold Washington. Orr retired from the office of Cook County Clerk in 2018,opting not to run for an eighth term.
Helen Shiller is a former Alderman of the 46th ward in Chicago,Illinois. Shiller is also a published author,having written a 500-page book on her politics and activism in Chicago from 1971 to 2011. Shiller served in the Chicago City Council for six four-year terms,from 1987 to 2011. Shiller was elected to the City Council on her third attempt,as Harold Washington,Chicago's first black Mayor,was re-elected to his second term,and her election as alderman helped close the Council Wars era in Chicago government. Shiller has been described as "a reformer unafraid to take on the boys in power." A less flattering description is that she is "committed to liberal causes and destroying all within her path". Among her most significant impacts on Chicago were her advocacy for diverse,inclusive,affordable housing and helping craft Chicago's response to the HIV/AIDS crisis. Her commitment to fostering community development without displacement often brought Shiller into contention with some constituencies,real estate developers,and editorial boards. Shiller's oral history was collected by Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Uptown resident Studs Terkel in his 2003 book,Hope Dies Last. As she details in her own book,among her policy victories as a City Council member was:getting human rights legislation passed,having Chicago implement anti-apartheid legislation,creating a City Council Subcommittee on Domestic Violence,and building a unique mix-used development.
