"Shook" is a song by English girl group Sugababes. Written by the group, Anya Jones and Jon Shave, with production by the latter and Big Softy, it was self-released on 9 July 2025.

Contents

Described by the group as their "summer party banger", the song is an electropop and synth-pop track and was accompanied by a music video directed by Dora Paphides. Upon its release, "Shook" was well received by music critics, who praised the production value of the song, as well as the group for their harmonies and for "tapping into their core values" by "blending their trademark sound".

Background and release

Following the release of "Jungle" in March 2025, the group announced during an interview with Clash magazine that more music would follow, with Mutya Buena suggesting there were "other singles that [they] were about to release". [1] The following month, they released "Weeds", [2] and embarked on their '25 Tour, which concluded in May. [3] Leading up to the release of "Shook" on 9 July 2025, the group teased the song via social media posts. [4] Upon release, the group said: "From the moment we started writing and then putting the harmonies together, we knew it had to be a single." [5] [6] The song was released independently, with distribution for the single being handled by the Orchard. [7] [8]

Music video

An accompanying music video for "Shook", directed by Dora Paphides, was released on the same day as the single's release. The video was filmed in an area of London, England, with The O2 Arena seen in the background. [9] It begins with brief individual shots of each member of the group before a shot of them together, followed by a compilation consisting of various London landmarks including buses, cable cars and flowing traffic, which appears consistently throughout the video. A lorry with the Sugababes logo is seen amongst the traffic and a road sign baring the word "Shook" is also featured. Buena, who is wearing a sparkly denim jacket, a red top, black sequinned shorts and black boots, emerges from behind the lorry to perform her verse and continues walking, Keisha Buchanan, who is wearing a yellow cut-out dress and black boots, subsequently performs the latter half of the verse in front of the lorry, before the chorus begins featuring a shot of each member performing choreography inside the back of the lorry and a further shot of them walking together, whilst a van revving its engine is inserted mid-chorus. Siobhán Donaghy, wearing a silver dress and snakeskin boots, then performs her verse on the back of a moving trailer with various shots of different choreography before the chorus repeats. As the video concludes, it changes to night time and features several shots of the group stood inside the lorry, the final of which sees a red light shining upon them. [10]

Commercial performance

After just two days worth of sales and streams, "Shook" debuted at number 13 on the UK Singles Sales Chart. [11]

Reception

In response to the release, DIY reviewed the song as electropop and heralded it a "surefire summer banger". [12] In a review for Clash, Robin Murray referred to "Shook" as a "refreshing summer banger", while also referencing "femme pop energy". [7] Dork noted the use of the group's harmonies, as well as the use of synths in its production. [13] Philip Logan of CelebMix described the song as retro, fresh, and fierce. [14]
