Shwegyin [2] is a town in Bago District, Pegu region in Burma (Myanmar). It is the administrative seat of Shwegyin Township. Parts of the town and township are under the control of the Karen National Union. [3]

Ayeyarwady Region is a region of Myanmar, occupying the delta region of the Ayeyarwady River. It is bordered by the Rakhine State to the northwest, the Bago Region to the north, Bago Region and Yangon Region to the east, and the Bay of Bengal to the south and west.

Shwegyin Nikāya is the second largest monastic order of monks in Burma. It is one of nine legally sanctioned monastic orders (nikāya) in the country, under the 1990 Law Concerning Sangha Organizations. Shwegyin Nikaya is a more orthodox order than Sudhammā Nikāya, with respect to adherence to the Vinaya, and its leadership is more centralized and hierarchical. The head of the Shwegyin Nikaya is called the Sangha Sammuti (သံဃာသမ္မုတိ), whose authority on doctrine and religious practice is considered absolute.

The Shwegyin Dam is a rock-fill dam on the Shwegyin River in Shwegyin Township of the Bago Region located in the southern central part of Burma. The primary purpose of the dam is hydroelectric power generation and it has a 75 megawatts (101,000 hp) power station just below its base. Construction on the dam began in 2002, the first generator was operational in December 2010 and it was formally opened on 22 October 2011. It is owned by the Ministry of Electric Power and cost US$161 million to construct.

The exiled National Unity Government and major ethnic armed organisations repudiated the 2008 Constitution and called instead for a democratic federal state. Besides engaging this alliance, the SAC also contends with other anti-SAC forces in areas under its control. Hannah Beech of The New York Times observed the insurgents are apportioned into hundreds of armed groups scattered across the country.
