Silchar railway station

Silchar railway station [2] is a railway station situated at Tarapur, Silchar in Assam. The railway station falls under the jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway zone of the Indian Railways. The railway gauge functioned here is broad gauge. [3] The station consists of single diesel line [1] ". It is one of the oldest railway station in India built under Assam Bengal Railway. [4] The station has three platforms with a total of 14 originating trains. [5] It serves Silchar, as well as the whole Barak Valley. Trains operate to different cities of India from Silchar including Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Kanpur, Patna, Prayagraj, Hyderabad , Coimbatore, Vijayawada, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Thiruvananthapuram, Agartala & Dibrugarh. As of now, 170 stations across India are directly connected to Silchar railway station.

History

The Station was first inaugurated in 1898 under Assam Bengal Railway. Assam Bengal Railway was incorporated in 1892 to serve British-owned tea plantations in Assam. Assam Bengal Railway had III sections & Silchar railway station come under Section I named as Comilla–Akhaura–Kulaura–Badarpur section opened in 1896–1898 and finally extended to Lumding in 1903. [6]

Silchar railway station was the location of one of the uprisings in support of the Bengali language. When the Assam government, under Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha, passed a circular to make Assamese mandatory, Bengalis of Barak Valley protested. On 19 May 1961, Assam police opened fire on unarmed demonstrators at Silchar railway station. Eleven protesters were killed.

After the popular revolt, the Assam government had to withdraw the circular and Bengali was ultimately given official status in the three districts of Barak Valley. [7] [8]

Every year, 19 May is celebrated as Bhasha Shahid Divas to commemorate the incident.

Amenities

The station contains three platforms serving several passengers. It contains retiring rooms or passenger waiting rooms with proper sanitation facilities. [9] The Station is upgraded with reservation facilities through ticket counters in the year 1995. [10] It is also upgraded with RailTel free WiFi facilities. [11] The station is also upgraded with a Digital Museum Video Wall on the entrance of the station that will showcase the rich heritage of Indian Railways and other information related to rail travellers [12] [13]

Incidents

On 19 May 1961, during the Bengali Language Movement of Barak Valley, [14] Assam Police opened fire on unarmed demonstrators at Silchar railway station in which 11 protesters were killed. [15] After which Bengali language was ultimately given official status in Barak Valley [16]

On 9 June 2019, three coaches of Silchar–Trivandram Express caught fire in the early hours of Sunday, while it was stationed at Silchar railway station. No casualties recorded later [17]

Security

In 2020, High definition CCTV cameras were installed at platforms, circulating and waiting areas of Silchar railway station by Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) under ISS (integrated security system) to ensure round-the-clock security to passengers, especially women [18]

The Barak Valley is the southernmost region and administrative division of the Indian state of Assam. It is named after the Barak river. The Barak valley consists of three administrative districts of Assam namely - Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. The main and largest city is Silchar, which seats the headquarter of Cachar district and also serves as administrative divisional office of Barak valley division. The valley is bordered by Mizoram and Tripura to the south, Bangladesh and Meghalaya to the west and Manipur to the east respectively. Once North Cachar Hills was a part of Cachar district which became a subdivision in 1951 and eventually a separate district. On 1 July 1983, Karimganj district was curved out from the eponymous subdivision of Cachar district. In 1989 the subdivision of Hailakandi was upgraded into Hailakandi district.

The Bengali Language Movement of Barak Valley was a protest against the decision of the Government of Assam to make Assamese the state's sole official language, even though most Barak Valley residents speak Bengali. About 80% of the valley's residents are ethnic Bengalis, and the Bengali population in the Barak Valley region consists of both Hindus and Muslims in about equal number, constituting the overwhelming majority of the population. There is also a substantial minority of native tribes and immigrants from other parts of India.

The Cachar Express was a daily Indian Railways metre-gauge overnight express train from Lumding Junction to Silchar and vice versa, both stations are situated in the Indian state of Assam. The train was numbered as 15691 and 15692 respectively. The train service is suspended now as the route in which it used to run is now converted from metre gauge to broad gauge.

Fakiragram is a railway station on the New Jalpaiguri–New Bongaigaon section of Barauni–Guwahati line and is located in Kokrajhar district in the Indian state of Assam. A branch line from Fakiragram connects to Dhubri.

The Silchar–Secunderabad Express is a Superfast Express train operated by Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways that runs between Silchar, Assam and Secunderabad, Telangana via Guwahati. The train is currently being operated with 12513/12514 numbers on a weekly basis. Earlier this train was run between Guwahati and Secunderabad. From 21 October 2023, the train is being extended up to Silchar.

Kalain is situated in a strategic location of the Cachar district of Assam, India. It is about 28.5 kilometres (17.7 mi) from the district headquarters, Silchar, and is called the Gateway to Barak Valley. It serves as the main halt for all passenger trains from Silchar, Agartala, Dharmanagar, Dullabcherra, Badarpur, and Mahisasan. The station consists of a single Electric-Line.

Dullabcherra Railway Station is a railway station in Karimganj district, Assam. Its code is DLCR. It serves Dullabcherra town. The station consists of a single platform. It is the terminal station in Baraigram Jn - Dullabchera spur line of Lumding–Sabroom section and is the last railway line under Northeast Frontier Railway zone to complete gauge conversion.
