Sinking Ship Entertainment is a Canadian-based production, distribution and interactive company specializing in kids' live-action CGI blended series. [2] The company's headquarters are located in Toronto, Ontario. Since its founding in 2004, Sinking Ship has produced over 500 hours of content and their distribution division has sold to over 200 countries internationally. [3] The company was named #1 in production on Kidscreen's Hot 50 for 2020. [4]

History

Sinking Ship Entertainment was founded by Ryerson University graduates J. J. Johnson, Blair Powers, and Matt Bishop in 2004. [5] The name "Sinking Ship" was chosen when Johnson and Powers were pitching a project in their final year at Ryerson and trying to convince their peers to pick up the remaining crew roles. A classmate warned a fellow classmate who was interested to not join the team as it'd be like joining a sinking ship. [6]

In September 2004, Sinking Ship Entertainment debuted their first series This is Daniel Cook. . [7] Cook's passion for dinosaurs inspired the creation of Dino Dan , their first live-action CGI blended series. [8] [9] The series was released in 2010 on the Nick Jr. Channel and led to the opening of the company's visual effects division. [10]

In 2016, Sinking Ship Entertainment entered the feature film market with the release of Odd Squad: The Movie. [11] Since then, SSE has also released Odd Squad: World Turned Odd and Dino Dana The Movie. [12] [13]

In February 2016, Sinking Ship Entertainment launched a distribution division after acquiring Picture Box Distribution. [14]

On May 2, 2019, Sinking Ship launched an animation series division. [15]

During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Sinking Ship Entertainment produced Lockdown , a tween web series in partnership with YouTube Originals for Kids and Family. The series was filmed remotely through web cameras and smart phones. [16]

In 2021, Sinking Ship partnered with Apple TV+ and the Jane Goodall Institute to produce a children's series called Jane about a girl who, with her friends, have imaginary play to save endangered animals. [17]

<i>Dino Dan</i> Canadian TV series

Dino Dan is a Canadian television series that was created and is directed by J. J. Johnson. The series premiered on TVOKids in Canada on January 4, 2010, and on the Nick Jr. Channel in the United States on October 17 of the same year. The show is produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment, in association with TVOKids, Access, Knowledge Network, and SCN. A sequel of the series, Dino Dana, premiered on Amazon Prime on May 26, 2017. The show premiered on Universal Kids on October 6, 2018, three years after Nick Jr.'s rights to the series expired. It was reported in February 2013 that CITV had acquired and secured rights to air the programme and eventually re-air it on the channel.

<i>Dino Dana</i> Canadian childrens television series

Dino Dana is a Canadian television series created and directed by J. J. Johnson. The series was developed as a follow-up to Dino Dan: Trek's Adventures and premiered on Amazon Prime Video on May 27, 2017. Dino Dana: The Movie was released on Prime Video in September 2020. It was originally going to be a theatrical release on March 21, 2020, but was delayed and later canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. A new spin-off of Dino Dana, titled Dino Dex, debuted in October 2024.

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle is an American animated sitcom produced by DreamWorks Animation Television which is a reboot of the 1959–64 animated television series of the same name. It debuted on May 11, 2018, on Amazon Prime Video, being DreamWorks Animation Television's first series to air on a streaming service other than Netflix. Like its preceding spin-off The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show, animation was outsourced by DHX Media's 2D animation studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Michela Luci is a Canadian actress from Ancaster, Ontario, most noted as the leading role of Dino Dana. She won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in a Children's, Family Viewing or Special Class Program at the 45th Daytime Emmy Awards, and is a two-time Canadian Screen Award nominee for Best Performance in a Children's or Youth Program or Series at the 6th Canadian Screen Awards in 2018 and the 7th Canadian Screen Awards in 2019. She also portrayed Tabby in the science fiction series Endlings, which premiered on January 5, 2020 on CBC Television in Canada and Hulu in the U.S.

James Anthony Johnson, known professionally as J. J. Johnson, is a Canadian-born writer, director, executive producer, and founding member of Sinking Ship Entertainment. He is the creator of children's television programmes, including This is Daniel Cook, Dino Dana and Endlings. He also serves on the Youth Media Alliance board as a co-chair.
