SkyAirWorld was a scheduled and charter airline based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It provided a range of services including charter work for the Australian military, and also provided wet-leases for other carriers, particularly airlines in the South Pacific.

History

SkyAirWorld first came to the attention of the aviation industry in Australia when it issued a Press Release on 2 October 2006 announcing its intentions. [2] The company registered its first aircraft, a second-hand ERJ-170 on lease, on 8 March 2007; [3] it arrived at Brisbane from Hong Kong the following week. The aircraft was promptly repainted in Solomon Airlines colours after an agreement was reached between the two airlines that SkyAirWorld would operate on behalf of Solomon's. [4] Among its members was former Ozjet Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Mr Peter Schott an MBA graduate from Swinburne University in Melbourne.

The relationship proved to be short-lived, being suspended in August 2007 with each party blaming the other; SkyAirWorld claimed that it was not being paid, [5] while from the other camp came claims that the ERJ-170 was inadequate to the task [6] as it lacked adequate load-carrying capacity. The two parties attempted to resolve the dispute but on 3 October 2007 it was announced by the Solomon Islands Government that the agreement had been terminated. [7] The aircraft was subsequently partially repainted to remove the Solomon's titles.

On 13 November 2007 it was reported in Solomon Islands media that a new airline would commence services between Brisbane and Honiara by the end of the month, [8] using an ERJ-170 until an ERJ-190 became available early in 2008. [8] The airline, to be called Coral Sea Express, [8] was reported to have secured a partnership with a Solomons Islands-based company. [8] The Managing director of Coral Sea Express was reported to be David Charlton, [8] who was also the CEO of SkyAirWorld. [2] However this did not eventuate, and on 10 January 2008 SkyAirWorld announced that it would enter a joint venture with Indonesian airline Lion Air (to be called Lion Air Australia), to enable Lion Air to enter the Australian domestic airline market, and to serve routes between Australia and Indonesia. [9] Australian media outlets reported that Lion Air was taking a 49% interest in SkyAirWorld under the joint venture. [10] [11]

On 28 November 2008 SkyAirWorld was reported as signing an agreement to establish the flag carrier airline of Timor-Leste. The airline, to be called Timor Air, would use a SkyAirWorld Embraer 190 for services from Dili to Darwin and Bali; operations were planned to commence in February 2009. SkyAirWorld intended to operate on the route in its own right, commencing on 16 February 2009. [12] [13] At the same time the partnership with Timor Air was announced, SkyAirWorld's CEO David Charlton announced plans for the airline to fly twice-weekly domestic services from Brisbane to Darwin via Cloncurry. [14]

In February 2009, SkyAirWorld grounded three of its Embraer aircraft and sacked 40 people out of its 140 workforce but the airline temporarily suspended its operations on 22 February 2009 after the airline cited that it would be restructuring its business. However, in March 2009 the airline had all of its Embraer aircraft repossessed by their lessor; with the airline, which owed more than A$40 million to creditors, placed under voluntary administration. The former SkyAirWorld Chief Executive Officer (CEO) David Charlton and his father in-law, Kenneth Allan, claimed that SkyAirWorld owed them A$32 million with the airline's 140 former employees being owed A$1.8 million. [1]

After the termination of the agreement with Solomon Airlines, SkyAirWorld had initially limited itself to charter services. Following the delivery of the first ERJ-190, the airline re-entered the field of scheduled services, operating on behalf of Air Niugini on services to and from Sydney. It then commenced operating on its own behalf between Brisbane and Honiara, and following regulatory approval in late July, [18] launched services between Brisbane and Cairns via Cloncurry in August 2008, flying three times a week. [19]

The Lion Air Australia joint venture was to have six Boeing 737-900ER aircraft, but this never came to fruition. [10]

Alliance Airlines owns and operates a fleet of Fokker and Embraer jet aircraft: Fokker 70, Fokker 100 and Embraer 190. Alliance runs fly-in fly-out (FIFO) air charter services for the Australian mining and resources industry, as well as private aircraft charters throughout Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and South East Asia. Alliance also provides aircraft component sales and leasing worldwide.

Capiteq Pty Limited, trading as Airnorth, is a regional airline based at Darwin International Airport in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. It operates scheduled and charter services in the Northern Territory, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, and East Timor.

Hainan Airlines Co., Ltd. is an airline headquartered in Haikou, Hainan, China. It is the largest civilian-run and majority state-owned air transport company, making it the fourth-largest airline in terms of fleet size in the People's Republic of China, and the tenth-largest airline in Asia in terms of passengers carried. It operates scheduled domestic and international services on 500 routes from Hainan and nine locations on the mainland, as well as charter services. InterCaribbean Airways, Ltd. is a regional airline based in the Turks and Caicos Islands, a British Overseas Territory. The airline offers scheduled passenger flights and charter flight services from its hub in Providenciales International Airport. Since its launch in 1991, its travel destinations have expanded to multiple Caribbean islands including Antigua, The Bahamas, Barbados, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and St. Maarten.

ExpressJet Airlines was a regional airline in the United States that operated from 1987 until 2022. It was headquartered in College Park, Georgia. The company began as Britt Airways and flew exclusively as Continental Express, the contracted codeshare partner for Continental Airlines. The name was changed to ExpressJet at the beginning of 1995 as the company began acquiring regional jets, replacing its fleet of turboprop aircraft. Along with flying as Continental Express, ExpressJet expanded flying under the Delta Connection brand from 2007 through 2008 and again from 2012 through 2018. Service as American Eagle was flown between 2012 and 2019 and service under the United Express brand began in 2009. ExpressJet also flew an independent operation under their own brand in 2007 through 2008. When Continental Airlines merged into United Airlines in 2012, the Continental Express operations were added to the United Express service. In September 2020, it exited the fee-for-departure airline market and temporarily ceased flights after the conclusion of its contract with its sole remaining mainline partner, United Airlines. In September 2021, ExpressJet resumed operations as both an air charter provider and a regional airline under its own brand aha!—short for "Air-Hotel-Adventure." The brand's route structure focused on the West Coast of the United States with a hub at Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and scheduled flights began on October 24, 2021. The airline, including its brand aha!, filed for bankruptcy on August 23, 2022, having ceased all operations the previous day. In July 2023, the airline announced plans to relaunch as an air charter service using a single leased Boeing 777.

A regional jet (RJ) is a jet-powered regional airliner with fewer than 100 seats. The first one was the Sud-Aviation Caravelle in 1959, followed by the widespread Yakovlev Yak-40, Fokker F-28, and BAe 146. The 1990s saw the emergence of the most widespread Canadair Regional Jet and its Embraer Regional Jet counterpart, then the larger Embraer E-Jet and multiple competing projects. In the US, they are limited in size by scope clauses.

Pacific Air Express was an airline based in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It operated cargo services to Honiara, Nauru, Noumea, Port Moresby and Port Vila; and charter flights in the South Pacific area. Its main bases were Brisbane Airport and Honiara International Airport.

Timor Air was an airline launched in partnership with Vincent Aviation in July 2011. It was the proposed flag carrier airline of East Timor (Timor-Leste).

Chautauqua Airlines, Inc. was an American regional airline and a subsidiary of Republic Airways Holdings based in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. Prior to the shut down of operations, it operated scheduled passenger services to 52 airports in the United States and Canada via code sharing agreements as the Delta Connection for Delta Air Lines, AmericanConnection for American Airlines, and United Express for United Airlines. Chautauqua previously flew feeder services for other airlines via code sharing agreements including Allegheny, USAir, TWA, Continental, Frontier, and America West. Its last day in operation was December 31, 2014, at which time all flying was absorbed by the Shuttle America certificate.
