Dominique McLean (born March 2, 1998), known professionally as SonicFox, is an American professional esports player of several fighting games. They have topped many tournaments, including seven Evolution Championship Series (EVO) events for five different game franchises. They are the highest paid fighting game esports player in the world as of August 4, 2019, with over $719,204.94 in earnings. [2] McLean was named Esports Player of the Year at The Game Awards 2018 and included in Forbes 's 2020 "30 Under 30" for Games.
A furry, McLean is known to compete in the fursuit of their fursona, a blue-and-white anthropomorphic fox.
McLean's older brother, Christian, got McLean interested in fighting video games when McLean was three years old. [3] Over the next several years, while McLean continued to play games, they came into the furry fandom around the age of ten or eleven, and developed the "SonicFox" character. [4] They are known to participate in tournaments in the fursuit of their fursona, a blue-and-white anthropomorphic fox. [4]
Around 2011, McLean was playing in non-competitive online Mortal Kombat games, and their online friends encouraged them to try their skills at an offline Mortal Kombat tournament in 2012. [5] While McLean only came in ninth at the event, they were enthralled with the competitive atmosphere, and they have continued to participate in various fighting game championships. [4]
McLean achieved a 6–0 victory at the Injustice: Gods Among Us tournament at Evo 2014. [6] News.com.au reported in December 2015 that McLean had not lost a single tournament in the previous 18 months, and that they earned $150,000 USD within the span of two weeks by winning Mortal Kombat tournaments. McLean was named the "Esports Player of the Year" at The Game Awards 2018 ceremony, earning media attention for their acceptance speech. [8] Forbes included McLean on their 2020 "30 Under 30" in the Games category. [9]
In early 2020, SonicFox signed with the fighting games division of the esports team Evil Geniuses. [10] SonicFox was added as a background character in Skullgirls later that year. [11] They announced their departure from Evil Geniuses in late 2023. [12]
McLean was raised in Townsend, Delaware. [13] As of 2018, McLean was a student at the New York Institute of Technology. [4] McLean chose to focus on academics while still maintaining a balance between their professional gaming and school life. [14] McLean is openly gay. [15] In September 2019, McLean came out on Twitter as non-binary. [16] [17] [18] McLean publicly uses singular they pronouns, reserving use of masculine pronouns only for those to whom they are close, in order to help normalize the use of singular they. [19]
Fursuits are custom-made anthropomorphic animal costumes owned and worn by cosplayers and members of the furry fandom, commonly known as "furries"; a furry who wears a fursuit is called a fursuiter. The term is believed to have been coined in 1993 by Robert King. Unlike mascot suits, which are usually affiliated with a team or organization, fursuits represent an original character created by their wearer, and are often better-fitting and more intricately crafted, with features such as a moving jaw. Fursuits are made in a wide range of styles, from cartoonish to highly realistic.

The Evolution Championship Series, commonly known as Evo, is an American annual esports event that focuses exclusively on fighting games. The tournaments are completely open and use the double elimination format. As with Super Battle Opera, contestants travel from all over the world to participate, most notably from Japan. The first Evolution was originally held as a Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Street Fighter Alpha 2 tournament called the Battle by the Bay. It changed its name to Evo in 2002. Every successive tournament has seen an increase of attendees. It has been held at various venues across the Las Vegas Valley since 2005. As of 2021, the event is jointly owned by Sony Interactive Entertainment and the Endeavor esports venture RTS.

Echo Fox was an American esports organization. It was founded on December 18, 2015, by retired basketball player Rick Fox, who created Echo Fox after he purchased the NA LCS spot of Gravity Gaming. The organization had expanded into various games with teams competing in titles such as Gears of War, Call of Duty, CS:GO, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Injustice 2,Madden NFL 19, Mortal Kombat, Super Smash Bros., and Street Fighter V. Echo Fox had several fighting game players with championship titles and are a well known organization in the professional scene.

The event featured a major tournament for six fighting games, including Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, as well as various smaller-scale competitions.

The event offered tournaments for various video games, including Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, and Dragon Ball FighterZ, as well as the newly released Soulcalibur VI, Mortal Kombat 11, Samurai Shodown, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate; the latter received the most entrants with over 3,500 players participating, making it the largest in person Super Smash Bros. tournament of all time.

While a physical event was to have been in Las Vegas from July 31 to August 2, 2020, as part of the long-running Evolution Championship Series, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizations cancelled the physical event, and instead planned a series of online events running from July 4 to August 2, 2020. The online event was later cancelled due to sexual misconduct allegations against organizer and co-founder Joey Cuellar.

A fursona is a personally claimed persona resembling an anthropomorphic animal adopted by a member of the furry fandom. Fursonas can provide numerous roles for the creator. According to The New Science of Narcissism, 95% of those in the furry fandom have at least one fursona; with the Anthropomorphic Research Project estimating that the average furry has between two and three fursonas over the course of their life.

Considered a prominent figure in the fighting game community, Christiansen primarily makes video content on various fighting games, such as Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. He is particularly a fan of the Marvel vs. Capcom series. He is also known for his grassroots efforts to organize fighting game tournaments along with his campaigns to revive various fighting game series.
