Study of a Nude, or Suzanne sewing is an 1880 painting made by Paul Gauguin in Paris. It is currently in the collection of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen. [1] [2] The painting depicts a young woman who is arranging a garment in undisguised nakedness. [3]
The painting depicts a young, nude woman who is arranging a garment. The scene is set in a bedroom with the woman sitting on an unmade bed against a mauve wall that is decorated with a mandolin and a tapestry. The body of the model is a three-quarter perspective with the head in profile. He depicts her body realistically, without idealisation. We see a bigger stomach with rolls, and her hands are disproportionately larger.
Despite the impact the painting had on the Impressionist exhibition, Gauguin was unable to sell it. His wife, Mette, refused to hang the painting in their home. However, when Gauguin left his family in Copenhagen, the picture was held by her until it was sold in 1892 to the Danish artist, Theodor Philipsen. [4]
In 1920, Philipsen donated the work to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, and since 1922, it has been in the collection of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.
Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin was a French Post-Impressionist artist. Unappreciated until after his death, Gauguin is now recognized for his experimental use of color and Synthetist style that were distinct from Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he spent ten years in French Polynesia. The paintings from this time depict people or landscapes from that region.
The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, commonly known simply as Glyptoteket, is an art museum in Copenhagen, Denmark. The collection represents the private art collection of Carl Jacobsen (1842–1914), the son of the founder of the Carlsberg Breweries.
Stephan Abel Sinding was a Norwegian-Danish sculptor. He moved to Copenhagen in 1883 and had his breakthrough the same year. In 1890 he obtained Danish citizenship. In 1910 he settled in Paris where he lived and worked until his death in 1922.

Emil Jens Baumann Adolf Jerichau was a Danish sculptor. He belonged to the generation immediately after Bertel Thorvaldsen, for whom he worked briefly in Rome, but gradually moved away from the static Neoclassicism he inherited from him and towards a more dynamic and realistic style. He was a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and its director from 1857 to 1863.
Oviri is an 1894 ceramic sculpture by the French artist Paul Gauguin. In Tahitian mythology, Oviri was the goddess of mourning and is shown with long pale hair and wild eyes, smothering a wolf with her feet while clutching a cub in her arms. Art historians have presented multiple interpretations—usually that Gauguin intended it as an epithet to reinforce his self-image as a "civilised savage". Tahitian goddesses of her era had passed from folk memory by 1894, yet Gauguin romanticises the island's past as he reaches towards more ancient sources, including an Assyrian relief of a "master of animals" type, and Majapahit mummies. Other possible influences include preserved skulls from the Marquesas Islands, figures found at Borobudur, and a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple in central Java.

Wilhelm Peter Henning Hansen was a Danish businessman and art collector, founder of the Ordrupgaard Art Museum north of Copenhagen. He made a fortune in the insurance industry as founder of the Danish insurance companies Dansk Folkeforsikringsanstalt and Mundus, and as managing director of Hafnia, another Danish insurance company, from 1905 until his death in 1936.
Hanne Finsen is a Danish art historian and museum director who has shown special interest in French art. While at the National Gallery of Denmark, in 1970 she arranged the internationally acclaimed Henri Matisse retrospective. In 1978, she was appointed director of both the Hirschsprung Collection and the Ordrupgaard Collection. At Ordrupgaard, she presented a number of exhibitions, including those on Vilhelm Hammershoi and Édouard Manet. In 2005, in collaboration with the Musée du Luxembourg, Finsen presented "Matisse – A Second Life" at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, an exhibition focusing on the painter's later works.
