Sudhakaran Ramanthali is a Malayalam language writer and translator from Kerala, India. He has translated 27 works from Kannada to Malayalam. He received many awards including Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award for Translation and Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize.

Biography

Born in the village of Ramanthali near Payyanur in Kannur district, Sudhakaran completed his primary education in a government Malayalam medium school in his native place. [1] After his higher education in Mysore, he joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Bangalore. [1]

He was the main person behind the early Bangalore-based newspaper called Bangalore Nadam. [1] A good speaker, and an organiser of many literary events in Bangalore, Sudhakaran is also a regular contributor to the socio-cultural societies of Bangalore and is a regular guest at important literary events in Kerala. [1]

Personal life

Sudhakaran and his wife Rugmini have three children. [2] They currently lives in Bangalore, Karnataka.

Career

Sudhakaran was not only a writer but also a social activist from a young age. At the age of 20, he joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited as a technician and joined the Hindustan Aeronautics Employees Association. [3] He later served as a leader of the association for many years. During his tenure at HAL, the company has a Workers' Education class. When the opportunity arose to study English or Kannada, Sudhakaran chose to study Kannada. [4] He started learning Kannada after deciding for himself that Kannada, the state language, should be used to address the workers. [3] His first teacher of Kannada was RN Chandrasekhar, a colleague at HAL, who later became a well-known writer and a prominent leader of the Kannada movement. [3] After work, Chandrasekhar spent hours in the factory colony teaching him literature and discussing literature, sociology, and politics.

Sudhakaran has worked as the coordinator and editor at Kanaka Dasa Study research center at Bangalore and was member of several projects of the English Regional Institute. [5] He also served as the President of the Bengaluru Kairali Arts Committee and Kairali Nilayam Schools. [6]

Literary career

Before starting translations, Sudhakaran Ramanthali has authored three novels, one screenplay and a collection of short stories. His first published work was Ramapurathinte Katha published in 1983.

At the end of an interview with Chandrasekhara Kampara, Sudhakaran was given five books by him and asked if he could translate them into Malayalam. [3] Until then he had not translated any books into Malayalam and that is how he came to translate literature. He first translated Kambara's short novel called GK Mastarude Pranayakalam. [3] But it was published later only. Jokumaraswamy, the first published work, was published in 2013. [3] After that he has translated 27 works by eminent Kannada writers into Malayalam. [2]

Subhash Chandran is a Malayalam novelist, short story writer and journalist from Kerala, India. His work includes the 2010 novel Manushyanu Oru Aamukham and the stories "Vadhakramam", "Sanmargam", "Parudeesa Nashtam" and "Gotham", which have been adapted into films. Chandran is the only writer to receive Kerala Sahitya Akademi Awards for both his debut story collection (2001) and debut novel (2011).

The eldest of the five children born to N Kunhambu and A Kalliani, Prabhakaran was born at Parassinikkadavu in Kannur district of Kerala on 30 December 1952. He spent his childhood days at Madayi. Prabhakaran studied at Madayi L P School, Govt. High School, Madayi, Payyannur College and Government Brennen College, Thalassery. He served as a lecturer at the Dept. of Malayalam of Lekshmipuram college of Arts and Science, Neyyoor, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, University College, Thiruvananthapuram, CKG Memorial Govt College, Perambra, and Govt Brennen College, Thalassery, and retired while serving as the Head of the Malayalam Department of Brennen College. S. Hareesh is an Indian writer, translator and screenwriter of Malayalam literature and cinema. He is best known for his short stories and his acclaimed but controversial debut novel, Meesa, which explores caste in Kerala in the mid-20th century. The novel, initially serialized in the Mathrubhumi weekly, was withdrawn after protests by right-wing Hindutva groups and caste-community organizations for "maligning Hindu women and temple priests". It was later published as a full novel by DC Books. Hareesh is the recipient of several honours including the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Novel and the Geetha Hiranyan Endowment of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi. In November 2020, the English translation of Meesa, titled Moustache, was selected for the JCB Prize for Literature, the Indian literary award with the highest prize money.

Mobin Mohan is an Indian novelist who writes in the Malayalam language. He is a recipient of the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Yuva award of 2021. He was born in 1988 at Kanchiyar, Idukki district. His grandfather migrated to Idukki from Kottayam in 1944. He was born as the son of NG Mohanan and Sobhana. C. G. Rajagopal is a polyglot, poet and translator from Kerala, India. He received many awards including the Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize 2019, a literary honour in India, presented by Sahitya Akademi, India's National Academy of Letters.
