Sullivan's Island Historic District is a national historic district located at Sullivan's Island, Charleston County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 36 contributing buildings on Sullivan's Island. They predominantly include the core residential and administrative areas of Fort Moultrie built between about 1870 to 1950. Also included are representative "Island Houses" and the Post Chapel. Notable buildings include the Base Commander's Quarters, nine Senior Officers' Quarters, ten Junior Officers' Quarters, the Bachelor Officers' Quarters, the Administration Building, the Post Exchange and Gymnasium, and the Electrical Shop. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. [1]

The first fort, formerly named Fort Sullivan, built of palmetto logs, inspired the flag and nickname of South Carolina, as "The Palmetto State". The fort was renamed for the U.S. patriot commander in the Battle of Sullivan's Island, General William Moultrie. During British occupation, in 1780–1782, the fort was known as Fort Arbuthnot.

The lighthouse was erected to replace the defunct Morris Island Light on Morris Island, which was at risk of being destroyed by erosion, but remains standing and was stabilized in 2010. Construction was started in 1960, and it was first lit on June 15, 1962.

His Charleston Post Office and Courthouse has been designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

Pawleys Island Historic District is a national historic district located at Pawleys Island, Georgetown County, South Carolina. The district encompasses 12 contributing buildings and contains buildings ranging from ca. 1780 to post World War I, and includes shoreline which the owners of these homes think they own, and marshland. The building style is a variation of West Indian architecture which has been adapted to Pawleys climatic conditions. The original houses on Pawleys are not mansions but summer retreats, sturdily built and large enough to accommodate big families. Designed for the greatest degree of ventilation, with porches on multiple sides and with high brick foundations providing protection against gale tides, many of the 20th-century buildings have adhered to the traditional design that has proven well suited to this environment. The houses are equipped with large chimneys and fireplaces. Breezeways attached at the rear of the houses led to the kitchens. Servant's quarters were usually one or two room cabins equipped with fireplaces.

Battery Thomson is a historic artillery battery located at Sullivan's Island, Charleston County, South Carolina. It was built in 1906–1909, and is one of a series of batteries stretching from Fort Moultrie to the eastern end of Sullivan's Island. Until decommissioned in 1947, the concrete battery housed two, ten inch guns. It measures approximately 326 feet long and 84 feet wide, with the front or ocean side of the battery at approximately 10 feet high. Battery Thomson and its neighbor Battery Gadsden provided fortification at the mouth of Charleston Harbor.

The district encompasses 45 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 1 contributing structure in Atlanticville. They predominantly include frame residences built between about 1880 to 1950 which are known as “island houses.” Also located in the district are the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the Sullivan's Island Graded School.

U.S. Coast Guard Historic District is a national historic district located at Sullivan's Island, Charleston County, South Carolina. The district encompasses three contributing buildings and one contributing structure on Sullivan's Island. The property was established as a life saving station in 1891. The district contains the station house/administration building, boathouse, garage, and signal tower, which are laid out in an "L"-shaped court loosely organized around the bunker/sighting station. Also on the property is the non-contributing Charleston Light.

The district includes the summer homes of several leading James Island planters, the site of the American Civil War Battle of Secessionville, the unmarked grave of over 300 Union soldiers, and the remains of Fort Lamar, constructed about 1862.
