The Suminoe oyster (Magallana ariakensis), is a species of true oyster which inhabits intertidal hard grounds and substrate, as well as muddy creeks of warm estuaries throughout the western Pacific. [1] It is large and flat in appearance and almost identical in gross morphology to Crassostrea virginica .
Similar to other oysters, Crassostrea ariakensis is a bivalve mollusk with a hard calcium-carbonaceous shell. The hard shell provides protection from predation.
The Suminoe oyster can reach shell heights of 76 mm within 2 years post-settlement. [2] Growth and setting of Suminoe oyster larva were most successful at salinities of 15 to 20 ppt, with no successful settlement occurring at salinities of 35 ppt or above. [3] Growth of oyster spat was optimal at 25 °C.
Spawning occurs from July until September at a bottom water temperature of 22–26 °C. Spawning is related to water temperature and salinity. [4]
Due to the Suminoe oysters' disease resistance and rapid growth, there were numerous discussions regarding the introduction of the oyster to the Chesapeake Bay. The native species to the Chesapeake Bay, Crassostrea virginica has declined in population over the past three centuries, prompting this consideration. The states of Maryland and Virginia considered this introduction in hopes to revitalize the oyster industry and improve the water quality in the Bay.
A proposal was made by Maryland and Virginia, which in turn led to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, NOAA, the Environmental Protection Agency, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service preparing a programmatic Environmental Impact Statement. [5] After extensive deliberation and directed research it was determined that the potential risks of the introduction could cause "unacceptable ecological risks." [6] Officials of Maryland, Virginia, the U.S. Army of Engineers and the Potomac River Fisheries Commission decided against introducing the Suminoe oyster in 2009 and decided to focus their efforts on native oyster restoration. [7]
The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the United States. The Bay is located in the Mid-Atlantic region and is primarily separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the Delmarva Peninsula with its mouth of the Bay at the south end located between Cape Henry and Cape Charles. With its northern portion in Maryland and the southern part in Virginia, the Chesapeake Bay is a very important feature for the ecology and economy of those two states, as well as others surrounding within its watershed. More than 150 major rivers and streams flow into the Bay's 64,299-square-mile (166,534 km2) drainage basin, which covers parts of six states and all of Washington, D.C.
Oyster is the common name for a number of different families of salt-water bivalve molluscs that live in marine or brackish habitats. In some species, the valves are highly calcified, and many are somewhat irregular in shape. Many, but not all oysters are in the superfamily Ostreoidea.
Selective breeding is the process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular phenotypic traits (characteristics) by choosing which typically animal or plant males and females will sexually reproduce and have offspring together. The eastern oyster —also called the Atlantic oyster, American oyster, or East Coast oyster—is a species of true oyster native to eastern North and South America. Other names in local or culinary use include the Wellfleet oyster, Virginia oyster, Malpeque oyster, Blue Pointoyster, Chesapeake Bay oyster, and Apalachicola oyster. C. virginica ranges from northern New Brunswick through parts of the West Indies and south to Brazil. It is farmed in all of the Maritime provinces of Canada and all Eastern Seaboard and Gulf states of the United States, as well as Puget Sound, Washington, where it is known as the Totten Inlet Virginica. It was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in the nineteenth century and is common in Pearl Harbor.
The Ostreidae, the true oysters, include most species of molluscs commonly consumed as oysters. Pearl oysters are not true oysters, and belong to the order Pteriida.
Perkinsus marinus is a species of alveolates belonging to the phylum Perkinsozoa. It is similar to a dinoflagellate. It is known as a prevalent pathogen of oysters, causing massive mortality in oyster populations. The disease it causes is known as dermo or perkinsosis, and is characterized by the degradation of oyster tissues. The genome of this species has been sequenced.

Haplosporidium nelsoni is a pathogen of oysters that originally caused oyster populations to experience high mortality rates in the 1950s, and still is quite prevalent today. The disease caused by H. nelsoni is also known as MSX. MSX is thought to have been introduced by experimental transfers of the Pacific oyster, which is resistant to this disease.
Oyster reef restoration refers to the process of rebuilding or restoring of oyster reefs all over the globe. Over time, oysters have been negatively affected by environmental change, such as harmful fishing techniques, over harvesting, water pollution, and other factors. The results of these factors have been disease and ultimately, a large decline in the global population of oysters and the prevalence and sustainability of oyster reefs. Apart from the ecological importance of oyster reefs, oyster farming is an important industry, particularly in coastal areas. Both artificial materials and natural components have been used to rebuild the reefs in an attempt to regenerate the oyster population thus fostering the reformation of reefs.
Bonamia ostreae is a parasitic Rhizaria in the phylum Haplosporidia that can cause lethal infections in shellfish, particularly the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis. Infection in oysters rarely results in clinical signs of disease and often the only indication of the infection is increased mortality. The Australian flat oyster, Ostrea angasi, has been infected with two similar Bonamia parasites, Bonamia exitiosa and B. roughleyi.

Thousands of years prior to European settlement of the Pacific Northwest of the United States the native oyster species Ostrea lurida had been established as a valuable dietary resource for indigenous people living on the coastal waters. European settlers who began to colonize the Pacific Northwest developed an acquired taste for shellfish, especially oysters, a delicacy that were considered to be a symbol of wealth. In the early history of the Pacific Northwest, people satisfied their hunger for shellfish by harvesting naturally occurring oyster beds. It was initially believed that the populations of indigenous oysters were sufficient to supply both tribal and commercial harvest. A marketable industry was created on the export of oysters and soon exploitation of harvesting had depleted the natural oyster beds in California and Oregon. As a result Washington state became the main supplier to areas along the coast which had failed to establish any conservation practices. Noticing the economic value and decline of natural availability, farmers began efforts to cultivate oysters to try to satisfy demand. Over the years the oyster industry of the Pacific Northwest has gone from extremely lucrative to completely nonexistent, but still the industry has been able to adapt and survive.
Magallana is a genus of true oysters containing some of the most important oysters used for food. Species in this genus have been moved from Crassostrea after it was found to be paraphyletic.
