The Sutter Avenue station is a station on the BMT Canarsie Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Van Sinderen and Sutter Avenues at the border of Brownsville and East New York, Brooklyn, [3] it is served by the L train at all times. [4]
This station opened on July 28, 1906.
This station was renovated in 2006, which included new windscreens (beige with green frames) and canopies (red with green frames) that run along the entire length of the platforms except for a small section at the north end and installation of yellow tactile warning strips on the edges. Artwork called The Habitat for the Yellow Bird by Takayo Noda was also installed and features stained glass windows of flowers on the windscreens. [5] [6] The renovation cost $12.56 million. [7]

This elevated station has two tracks and two side platforms. [8] The station is a microcosm of early-20th century BRT construction. Ornate period ironwork adorns the quaint wooden crosswalk beneath the south end of the station.
The only entrance is via a ground level station house underneath the tracks on the northwest corner of Sutter and Van Sinderen Avenues. [3] Inside is a token booth, turnstile bank, and a single canopied staircase to each platform at their extreme south ends. [9]
The station once had a second entrance north of the open entrance. [10] The entrance was accessed through a now-demolished pedestrian bridge over the Bay Ridge Branch right of way, [11] which led to both eastern corners of Belmont Avenue and Van Sinderen Avenue to the east of the right of way, as well as both western corners of Belmont Avenue and Junius Street to the west of the right of way. The pedestrian bridge was demolished between 1980 and 1988, [12] and the remnants of the entrance were repurposed into equipment rooms and emergency exits. [13] [14]
North of this station, the Canarsie Line formerly split into two separate elevated structures, one above Van Sinderen Avenue and another a block east above Snediker Avenue via an "S" curve. This curve into was one of the sharpest in the subway at around 75 degrees. As the curve swung eastward, it passed under the last remnant of the Fulton Street Elevated. The tracks on this line curved east on their way to City Line, Brooklyn before ending at Pitkin Avenue. The two Canarsie elevated structures ran north into separate platforms at Atlantic Avenue.[ citation needed ]
After the Fulton Street Elevated was closed in 1956, [15] the Canarsie Line continued using the tracks it always had and the rest of the structure fell into disuse. In 2002–2004, the portion above Snediker Avenue was abandoned and the northbound Canarsie Line track was re-routed to share the westernmost island platform with southbound Canarsie Line service there. Demolition of the unused elevated structure began in 2003 and was completed in 2005. Now, northbound L trains have a much gentler curve to the west, speeding service.[ citation needed ]
The Junius Street station is a station on the IRT New Lots Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Junius Street and Livonia Avenue in Brownsville, Brooklyn, it is served by the 3 train at all times except late nights, when the 4 train takes over service. During rush hours, occasional 2, 4 and 5 trains also stop here.
The Bedford Avenue station is a station on the BMT Canarsie Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Bedford Avenue and North Seventh Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, it is served by the L train at all times. With an annual total of 9,388,289 passengers for 2015, Bedford Avenue is the busiest subway station in Brooklyn outside of Downtown Brooklyn, as well as the busiest station in Brooklyn served by one subway service.
The New Lots Avenue station is an elevated station on the BMT Canarsie Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of New Lots and Van Sinderen Avenues at the border of Brownsville and East New York, Brooklyn, it is served by the L train at all times.
The 111th Street station is a station on the IND Fulton Street Line of the New York City Subway, located on Liberty Avenue at 111th Street in Richmond Hill, Queens. The station is served by the A train at all times.
The Bushwick Avenue–Aberdeen Street station is a station on the BMT Canarsie Line of the New York City Subway. Located in Bushwick, Brooklyn, it is served by the L train at all times.
The Wilson Avenue station is a station on the BMT Canarsie Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Moffat Street in Brooklyn, it is served by the L train at all times.
The Myrtle–Wyckoff Avenues station is a New York City Subway station complex formed by the intersecting stations of the BMT Canarsie Line and the BMT Myrtle Avenue Line, served by the L and M trains at all times. It is located at Myrtle Avenue and Wyckoff Avenue in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn and the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens. The complex is connected by a set of stairs and several elevators and escalators between the elevated and underground levels. The station was renovated completely from 2004 to 2008.
The Atlantic Avenue station is a rapid transit station on the BMT Canarsie Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Atlantic and Snediker Avenues at East New York, Brooklyn, it is served by the L train at all times.
The Livonia Avenue station is an elevated station on the BMT Canarsie Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Livonia and Van Sinderen Avenues at the border of Brownsville and East New York, Brooklyn, it is served by the L train at all times. It opened on June 27, 1906, and is planned to be connected with the IRT New Lots Line's Junius Street station in the 2020s.
The Gates Avenue station is a local station on the elevated BMT Jamaica Line of the New York City Subway, located at the intersection of Gates Avenue and Broadway at the border of Bedford–Stuyvesant and Bushwick, Brooklyn. It is served by the Z train during rush hours in the peak direction and by the J train at all other times.

The Flushing Avenue station is a local station on the BMT Jamaica Line of the New York City Subway. The Broadway Junction station is a New York City Subway station complex shared by the elevated BMT Canarsie Line and BMT Jamaica Line, and the underground IND Fulton Street Line. It was also served by trains of the Fulton Street Elevated until that line closed in 1956. It is located roughly at the intersection of Broadway, Fulton Street and Van Sinderen Avenue at the border of Bedford–Stuyvesant and East New York, Brooklyn. The complex is served by the A, J, and L trains at all times; the C train at all times except late nights; and the Z train during rush hours in the peak direction only.
The Cypress Hills station is a skip-stop station on the BMT Jamaica Line of the New York City Subway, located on Jamaica Avenue in the Cypress Hills neighborhood of northeastern Brooklyn. It is served by the J train at all times. The Z train skips this station when it operates.
The Metropolitan Avenue/Lorimer Street station is an underground New York City Subway station complex shared by the BMT Canarsie Line and the IND Crosstown Line. Located in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, the complex is served by the G and L trains at all times.
The Hinsdale Street station was a station on the demolished BMT Fulton Street Line in Brooklyn, New York City, at Pitkin Avenue and Hinsdale Street. It had 3 tracks and 2 side platforms. It opened on November 17, 1918, as a replacement for Eastern Parkway station one block to the west on Snediker Avenue, as part of the Dual Contracts, and had a connecting spur to the BMT Lexington Avenue Line via Manhattan Beach Crossing. It was served by BMT 13 trains until 1940, when they were replaced with BMT 12 trains. It also had a connection to the Bergen Street Line trolleys. It closed on April 26, 1956, along with the rest of the remaining segment of the Fulton Elevated Line west of Hudson Street. The station was not replaced with an underground IND Fulton Street Line station, which runs north along Pennsylvania Avenue towards Broadway Junction; the nearest existing station is Sutter Avenue on the BMT Canarsie Line.
