Taking Back Sunday is the fifth studio album by American rock band Taking Back Sunday. After returning home from touring the Soundwave festival in February and March 2010, guitarist Matthew Fazzi and bassist Matthew Rubano were dismissed from the group. They were replaced by guitarist John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper, both of whom were former members of the band. Later in March, the band began writing material for their next album in El Paso, Texas. The following month, demos were recorded with the aim to release a new album later in the year. Recording began in October with producer Eric Valentine at Barefoot Recording in Hollywood, California and finished in January 2011.
In March 2011, Taking Back Sunday was announced for release, and a month later, a music video of "El Paso" was released. In May, "Faith (When I Let You Down)" was released as a single, along with its music video. In June, "This Is All Now" was released as a single, and on June 28, Taking Back Sunday was released through Warner Bros. and Sire Records. The band embarked on a tour of the US with Thursday in June and July. In July, a music video was released for "Faith (When I Let You Down)" featuring footage of the band recording and performing at The Bamboozle festival, followed by the release of the single "You Got Me" in August. A US fall tour was undertaken in October and November, followed by a music video for "You Got Me" in the latter month. In March 2012, a music video was released for "This Is All Now". The band then had a headline spot on the 2012 edition of Warped Tour between June and August.
Taking Back Sunday sold 27,000 copies in its first week of release, charting at number 17 on the Billboard 200 chart. In addition, the album reached the top 20 on several other Billboard charts. The album also charted in the lower regions of the Australian, Canadian and UK album charts. The album received generally favorable reviews, with several reviewers making favorable comparisons to the band's debut album, Tell All Your Friends (2002).
In February and March 2010, Taking Back Sunday participated in the Australian festival Soundwave. [1] Soon after returning home, bassist Matthew Rubano sent the rest of the band song ideas, which were ignored. [2] After two weeks with no communication, three members of the band and their manager held a conference call with Rubano. During the call, the band stated their intention of continuing without him. [2] Guitarist Matthew Fazzi also received a call from the group, saying that they were "letting [him] go." [3] On March 29, statements by Fazzi and Rubano announcing their departure from the group were posted on the band's website. [4] Two days later, it was announced that former members guitarist John Nolan, and bassist Shaun Cooper had re-joined the band. Nolan and Cooper had left the band in 2003, going on to form Straylight Run. [5]
The idea of reuniting with Nolan and Cooper was first proposed in January 2010, when Mark O'Connell suggested Lazzara talk with Nolan on the phone. [6] Lazzara said: "One day he [O'Connell] called me and was like, 'Hey, man, what do you think about us going back to our original lineup?' And I was like, 'Are you crazy? I haven't talked to John [Nolan] in, like, seven years. I don't know if he'd want to do it.'" [6] O'Connell continued to insist on the idea, "and then I got a call from John [Nolan] ... it felt like no time had passed ... like we had just talked a few days ago". [6] The pair did not discuss creating music initially, instead "[we got] reacquainted with what had been going on in our lives. Because for me, I genuinely missed his friendship, and same with Shaun [Cooper]." [6]
As the discussions between Lazzara and Nolan continued, they began sending each other music. At first, the pair thought it would not work out. Eventually, it got to the point where "we were like, 'Oh, man, I think this could work'", according to Lazzara. [6] In March, the group relocated to a farm close to the Texas–Mexico border. [7] The group spent a few weeks [8] writing material at Sonic Ranch studio in El Paso, Texas. [9] The song writing process started off with a guitar part, Nolan and Lazzara would work on lyrics and melodies, and then bounce ideas off the other members. Lazzara would suggest bass parts, and drummer Mark O'Connell would contribute guitar parts. [10] The first song the group wrote was "Best Places to Be a Mom", which was written in 20 minutes. [11] The group wrote seven songs, [7] which would've "typically take[n] Taking Back Sunday six months to do[, instead] we did [it] in a week". [6] Cooper noted that all the members had "gotten better at playing and writing songs". [12]
Cooper said the band members relied "on each other instead of forcing each other to play something". [12] Guitarist Eddie Reyes insisted on playing his own part, as opposed to a chord progression, on several occasions. Cooper said "So instead of trying to force him to play one thing, he’ll go and do his own thing that’s way more cool and unique that any of us could imagine." [12] Lazzara mentioned there was "an urgency and an energy and an excitement" embedded into the material, which "you can't create or fake". [7] Nolan stated that Straylight Run helped Cooper and himself as musicians: "We learned, we grew and were much more mature coming back to TBS." [13] Cooper mentioned that towards the end of the writing process the group's "creative juices ... were just so depleted". [12]
In April, the band began demoing material, [14] and said they were aiming to release a new album later in the year. [6] In August, the band announced they would be recording in a few weeks' time, and were aiming for a spring 2011 release. [15] After some shows in the summer, the band began recording in October. [11] [16] Eric Valentine produced the sessions at Barefoot Recording in Hollywood, California. Valentine also engineered the sessions with assistance from Cian Riordan. The band used Undertone Audio Consoles during recording. [17] At the start of recording, the group had 18 songs. They whittled this number down little by little, and wrote additional songs [18] at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, Washington. [9] Nolan said recording the album was a "learning process" since "the way that the band had been making records was very different than what Shaun and I were used to coming back into it". [19] Nolan said their label was "pretty nervous and unsure about what was going to happen". [19] In addition to this, the label would hear their progress throughout the recording process and would infrequently provide feedback. [19] Towards the end of their relationship with the label, said "it was a whole new staff and I don’t think anyone cared anymore". [20] Looking back in 2015, Nolan said the group "ended up not feeling very good" about having their label check on the proceedings. [19]
The drums tracks were completed in early October 2010. [21] Valentine helped the group arrange their parts, according to Nolan: "He has this way of weaving those parts together in a way that we wouldn't have been able to do on our own." [18] Nolan said Valentine took control of "the amp stuff," which made sense to him "because he knows so much more about that stuff". [22] The group spent some time "messing around" with guitar pedals, according to Nolan. [22] On December 8, the band posted a behind-the-scenes video of themselves in the studio. [23] On January 10, 2011, the band announced that recording was officially completed. [24] A week later, the band said the album's artwork was being produced and Valentine was mixing the tracks. [25] [17] While 11 tracks ended up on the final version of the album, a further seven or eight songs were recorded. The new album is a return to the enthusiasm, creative openness and honesty that spawned our first one. We didn't set out to recreate the sound of Tell All Your Friends , but we did set out to reconnect with the excitement and energy we felt making it. [29]

Choosing to self-title the album, Lazzara said: "We haven’t had [a self-titled album], and going back to the original lineup, it seems appropriate." [11] Nolan mentioned a recurring theme throughout the album: "The issue of being an adult with a real life and a long-term relationship or marriage, and trying to make that work." [30] The album's sound has been described as rock [31] [32] [33] and post-hardcore. [34] Band members made up their own sequences for the track listing, then noted the similarities. Lazzara said "...with El Paso ... Why not come out swinging?" [22] The track was one of the first songs written for the album, and Lazzara said it encapsulates "both the mood of the environment we were in down there and the mood we were in about being back together again and writing new music". [8] Lazzara called it "probably the heaviest rock song we've ever written", [11] incorporating influences from Fugazi and Glassjaw, [35] and a Nirvana-like bass part. [36]
Lazzara said "Faith (When I Let You Down)" matches a "huge, punishing" chorus with a soft verse, which comes across as a "roller coaster" to him. [11] Lazzara mentioned that the track took longer to work on compared to the other songs on the album, going through 4 or 5 sets of lyrics. [37] One day, Lazzara was checking his emails and saw the phrase "Best Places to Be a Mom" roll across the news ticker. He thought it was "funny and in context it is". [38] The track started out as a slow song before being sped up by Reyes. [30] Lazzara said the track was "strikingly similar" to "You Know How I Do", the opening track on Tell All Your Friends; [39] the vocal melody is taken from "Rosanna" by Toto. [40] "Sad Savior" feature Nolan playing a 1950s Buddy Holly-esque guitar riff reminding Lazzara that he had missed John Nolan's guitar playing:"...I missed ... John's guitar playing, especially coupled with Eddie [Reyes]'s." [11]
Lazzara said, "Money (Let It Go)" has a James Bond "kind of spy/surf-y vibe" and features a "really cool surf-y solo" by Nolan. [11] It took influence from garage rock, and was compared to My Chemical Romance and the White Stripes. [35] O'Connell created the chord progression for "This Is All Now", while Nolan came up with the melody for the song's chorus. The track's lyrics went through three or four different drafts. Lazzara said it was about the group's relationship with "faith and growing up in and out of the church". [41] The verses were centred around an angular Dismemberment Plan-esque drum pattern. [42] "It Doesn't Feel a Thing Like Falling" featured a guitar riff in the vein of Hundred Reasons. [35] The band referred to the bridge in "Since You're Gone" as the "Beatles bridge" because it was "very unlike us," according to Lazzara. [43] Lazzara described "Call Me in the Morning" a "ballady kind of sentimental tune". [22] When the group recorded the track, they sat in a circle "with this crazy microphone in the middle and we were all playing together". [43] "You Were Right" started as an acoustic song, written by Nolan. [11]
On November 16, 2010, Lazzara posted a demo titled "Best Places to Be a Mom" to his SoundCloud page. [44] [45] "El Paso" was made available for streaming on March 28, 2011. [8] On March 30, AbsolutePunk confirmed that the album would be released in June. [46] The band performed a show at Maxwell's in Hoboken, New Jersey on April 6 where they debuted a new song entitled "Faith (When I Let You Down)". [47] The band revealed the track listing for the album, as well as the album's cover art on April 13. [48] The artwork, designed by Brad Filip, was inspired by a photograph taken by Claudia Meyer. [17] Two days later, "Best Places to Be a Mom" was made available for streaming. [45] On April 22, the band released the music video for "El Paso", [49] directed by Thursday guitarist Steve Pedulla. [50] The video features footage shot during the band's show at Maxwell's. [13] The group played a couple of shows in late April, before their appearance at The Bamboozle festival. [51] "Faith (When I Let You Down)" was made available for streaming on April 29, [52] and was released as a single on May 3 with "El Paso" and an acoustic version of "Great Romances of the 20th Century" as B-sides. [53] A music video was released for the song on May 6, [54] featuring footage of the band recording and performing at The Bamboozle festival. [55] It was released to radio on May 17. [56] In May, the band went on a tour of the UK [57] with support from The Xcerts. [58] Prior to the tour, most of the dates had been postponed until August and September due to scheduling conflicts. "This Is All Now" was released as a single on June 1 [60] with "Best Places to Be a Mom" and an acoustic version of "Ghost Man on Third" as B-sides. [61] On June 10, a lyric video was released for "This Is All Now". [62] Taking Back Sunday was made available for streaming on June 21, [63] and was released on June 28 [64] through Warner Bros. and Sire Records. [17] The iTunes deluxe edition included a demo of "You Should Have Waited" and acoustic versions of "Great Romances of the 20th Century" and "Ghost Man on Third" as bonus tracks. [65] A limited edition version of the album included a bonus disc containing six demo recordings. [9] In June and July, the band went on a US tour [41] with Thursday and Colour Revolt, supported by The New Regime. [66] On July 7, another music video was released for "Faith (When I Let You Down)". [67] According to MTV News' Jocelyn Vena, the video is a "social commentary about the fleeting nature of Internet fame, as illustrated by a fake cat trying to make it in Hollywood". [68] It was directed by Chris Marrs Piliero, who said it followed on from his video for Britney Spears' "I Wanna Go". [68] The video was filmed earlier in June. [69]
"You Got Me" was released as a single on August 26 with a live acoustic version of "Sad Savior" as the B-side. [70] The group went on a US fall tour in October and November with support from The Maine and Bad Rabbits. [71] On November 7, a music video was released for "You Got Me". [72] The video begins with the band wondering about Reyes whereabouts, before shifting to Reyes dancing on an empty stage. [73] The idea for it was proposed by the group's tour manager. Cooper said: "Back before we even started touring, we’d go out to clubs on Long Island together and Eddie [Reyes] would be tearing up the dance floor ... [He] is by far the best dancer of the band." [12] On March 21, 2012, a music video was released for "This Is All Now". [74] Directed by Greg Hunter and Josh Romero of Dionysian Entertainment, they had shot the footage during the previous summer and created a music video with it. The group was so impressed they selected it as an official video. [75] In April, the band toured Australia with New Found Glory and This Time Next Year. [76] In May, the group headlined Slam Dunk Festival in the UK. [77] Between June and August, they were one of the headliners of the 2012 edition of Warped Tour. [78]

Taking Back Sunday received generally favorable reviews, according to review aggregation website Metacritic. [79] AllMusic reviewer Gregory Heaney said Nolan and Cooper's return to the group helped "reinvigorat[e] their sound". [42] He called the record "the sophomore album the band never had". [42] Ian Chaddock of Big Cheese said the vocals weren't "as memorable and far less energetic," compared to the band's debut album. [35] He called the album "decent", containing "a handful of infectious, sing-along songs," but called it "far from the band's best". [35] In a brief review for Entertainment Weekly , Kyle Anderson said Lazzara was "maiming his vocal cords over chaotic guitar crunch," while still sounding "enraptured". [80] Tyler Munro of Exclaim! wrote that the album shared "many of the same dynamics" as the group's debut, specifically mentioning "the energy and layered hooks". [84] Melodic reviewer Pär Winberg called Valentine "a helluva good producer" and praised the production. [81] He also wrote that the group sounded "solid as a rock". [81]
IGN's Chad Grischow said the group charged "full steam ahead with the most rock focused album of their career". [32] He noted the album took the "harder edge of their last album" and moulded it "into something they, and their fans, should be much happier with". [32] In a brief review for Newsday , Glenn Gamboa said it was a "testament" to the group's talent that they can "turn essentially a transition album into something that sounds this good". [82] PopMatters reviewer Kiel Hauck wrote that Lazzara and Nolan's call-and-response vocals, featured on the group's debut, were placed "perfect[ly] throughout the record" as the pair "create a beautiful combination that serves as a reminder of what made this band so special in the first place". [83] Tori Pederson of Punknews.org said the group "sound like a well-oiled machine here," producing "arguably the best album of their career" in the process. [36] Spin 's Mikael Wood wrote that the album showcases the group's "crafty songwriting rather than the psychological intensity" that dominated their debut. [40]
Taking Back Sunday debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200 chart, [85] with 27,000 copies sold in the first week. [86] The album reached number 3 on the Alternative Albums chart, [87] number 4 on the Top Rock Albums chart, [88] and number 14 on both the Digital Albums [89] and Tastemaker Albums charts. [90] The album also charted at number 49 on the Australian Albums Chart, [91] number 57 on the Canadian Albums Chart [92] and number 87 on the UK Albums Chart. [93] In 2013, Nolan said he was proud of the self-titled album and felt like the group "came out with something that was not completely like any other Taking Back Sunday record". [94] In 2014, Lazzara said he felt like the members were "still feeling each other out because there were all those years between us ... but there were still times where one person wouldn't be as vocal about their ideas". [95] In 2017, Cooper said that making the album was "some of the most fun I’ve ever had", however, he added that it was "a bit of a letdown because people didn’t respond the way we thought. Looking back, I still think that album was very strong". [96] In a retrospective piece for Fuse.tv, writer Jason Lipshutz ranked the album as his fifth favorite Taking Back Sunday album. He said the album sounded like "an acceptance of identity and intrinsic strengths" and that group created "a rollicking return to form". [97]

Taking Back Sunday is an American rock band from Amityville, New York. The band was formed by guitarist Eddie Reyes and bassist Jesse Lacey in 1999. The band's members currently are Adam Lazzara, John Nolan, Shaun Cooper and Mark O'Connell (drums), accompanied by Nathan Cogan (guitar) for their live performances. The band's former members include Lacey, Reyes, bassist Matthew Rubano, and guitarist-vocalists Fred Mascherino and Matthew Fazzi.
Straylight Run is an indie rock band based in Baldwin, Nassau County, New York. The band released two albums, Straylight Run and The Needles the Space, as well as three EPs, Prepare to Be Wrong, About Time, and Un Mas Dos. In 2010, the band announced that they would be going on indefinite hiatus, but might reunite in the future. Two of the members, John Nolan and Shaun Cooper, previously played in Taking Back Sunday and have since rejoined the band.
Where You Want to Be is the second studio album by American rock band Taking Back Sunday. While touring to promote Tell All Your Friends (2002), guitarist John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper left the group and were replaced by Fred Mascherino and Matt Rubano, respectively. After a co-headlining tour with Saves the Day in fall 2003, the band began working on Where You Want to Be. Dismissive of several early songs, they wanted to "grow musically with this [new album]." In March 2004 recording of Where You Want to Be began, with Lou Giordano as producer. The band recorded at Mission Sound in Brooklyn, New York for two weeks before moving to Water Music in Hoboken, New Jersey, finishing recording by April.
Tell All Your Friends is the debut studio album by American rock band Taking Back Sunday, released on March 26, 2002, through Victory Records. Forming in 1999, the group underwent several lineup changes before settling on vocalist Adam Lazzara, guitarist and vocalist John Nolan, guitarist Eddie Reyes, bassist Shaun Cooper, and drummer Mark O'Connell. Taking Back Sunday released a five-song demo in early 2001, after which they toured the United States for most of the year. They rented a room in Lindenhurst, New York, where they wrote and demoed songs. In December 2001, the band signed with Victory Records; they began recording their debut album with producer Sal Villanueva at Big Blue Meenie Recording Studio in New Jersey.

Straylight Run is the self-titled debut studio album by American indie rock band Straylight Run. It was released on October 12, 2004, through Victory Records. The band was formed by guitarist John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper, after both of them left Taking Back Sunday in early 2003. They recruited Breaking Pangaea drummer Will Noon and John's sister Michelle Nolan, to complete the line-up. The band recorded some demos and toured throughout the remainder of 2003 before beginning work on the album. Straylight Run tracked it at Apple Head Studios in Woodstock, New York, between March and June 2004, with producers Michael Birnbaum and Chris Bittner.
Louder Now is the third studio album by American rock band Taking Back Sunday. In April 2005, the group had begun writing material for the album. Two months later, they signed with Warner Bros. Records and contributed a song to the Fantastic Four soundtrack. Soon afterwards, the group rented a room in Manhattan where they composed songs for Louder Now. They came up with 20 songs, discarding half of them and recording demos of the remainder. The group began recording Louder Now with Eric Valentine in September 2005 at Barefoot Studios in Los Angeles, California. After Warner Bros. told them they did not need to rush, they recorded new demos. Recording ended on New Year's Day, 2006, and was followed by a tour of the UK, Australia and the U.S.
A Lesson in Romantics is the debut studio album by American rock band Mayday Parade. The band resulted from a merger of two separate bands, Kid Named Chicago and Defining Moment. The band released an EP, Tales Told by Dead Friends, in June 2006, which they sold to people by following the 2006 edition of Warped Tour and offering copies; it eventually sold 10,000 copies. The band signed to Fearless Records in August. A Lesson in Romantics was recorded in early 2007 with producers Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount. Vocalist/guitarist Jason Lancaster left the band in March 2007 citing a lack of writing credit on the band's releases. Prior to the release of A Lesson in Romantics, "Black Cat", "When I Get Home, You're So Dead", and "Jamie All Over" were made available for streaming. After the album's release, the band participated in the 2007 edition of Warped Tour.

So Wrong, It's Right is the second studio album and major label debut by American rock band All Time Low. Following an unsuccessful showcase for Fueled by Ramen, Hopeless Records signed All Time Low in March 2006. They released an EP, Put Up or Shut Up, through the label in July of that year. After amassing 12 songs by January 2007, the band demoed some of them for Paul Leavitt. The group began recording So Wrong, It's Right in April at SOMD Studios in Beltsville, Maryland with producers Leavitt and Matt Squire. The band wrote five additional songs while in the studio. Following an acoustic tour in June, the band participated in Warped Tour, and "Dear Maria, Count Me In" was made available for streaming. After premiering a music video for "Six Feet Under the Stars", So Wrong, It's Right was released on September 25. The band spent the next three months supporting Boys Like Girls on their US tour.

New Again is the fourth studio album by American rock band Taking Back Sunday. When guitarist Fred Mascherino left the group after the Projekt Revolution tour ended in September 2007, band members took a break after years of touring. New Again was recorded in October and November 2008 at several studios in New York and California with David Kahne and Matt Squire as producers. Matthew Fazzi of Facing New York joined Taking Back Sunday in early 2008. He was praised by vocalist Adam Lazzara and the group's manager for incorporating new instruments into the group's sound. Guitarist Eddie Reyes called the album "one of the most aggressive records we've ever written". Towards the end of 2008, the group revealed the album's title, went on a US tour, and made "Carpathia" available for streaming.
Nothing Personal is the third studio album by American rock band All Time Low. As early as May 2008, the band began writing for their third album, and by November revealed they would be recording in the winter. The band began pre-production in early January 2009 and started recording later in the month, which lasted until March. Half of the album's songs were produced by Matt Squire with Butch Walker, David Bendeth and S*A*M and Sluggo each producing a few songs. Tom Lord-Alge mixed the majority of the album. "Weightless" was made available for streaming in March, and released as a single in April. A support slot for Fall Out Boy and an appearance at the Bamboozle festival followed.
Daybreak is the seventh studio album by the American rock band Saves the Day. This album is the band's first without long-time guitarist David Soloway since 1998, and their first with guitarist Arun Bali and bass guitarist Rodrigo Palma. The album also features Spencer Peterson on drums for the first time, before leaving the band prior to the album's release.
Dirty Work is the fourth studio album by American rock band All Time Low. Following the success of Nothing Personal, the band signed to major label Interscope Records in late 2009. After spending sometime writing material in Los Angeles, the band started recording with Mike Green in March 2010. Over the following months the band recorded songs with John Fields, Butch Walker, Matt Squire, David Kahne and U4L. In between sessions, the band embarked on the Bamboozle Roadshow tour. Neal Avron mixed the majority of the album's recordings while Green, Mark Trombino and Chris Lord-Alge each mixed a song. Vocalist/guitarist Alex Gaskarth co-wrote the album's songs with a variety of people, including those who produced a few of the songs. While recording, the album was planned for release in 2010. It was delayed to January 2011, and then to spring. Further recording sessions then took place in November 2010, as well as in January 2011.
Don't Panic is the fifth studio album by American rock band All Time Low. After signing with major label Interscope Records in November 2009, the band worked on their fourth album Dirty Work. It was delayed a number of times until its eventual release in June 2011. During that time, the people at the label that had signed the band were fired or replaced. By the end of the year, vocalist/guitarist Alex Gaskarth said Dirty Work was "kind of dead in the water", prompting the band to work on their next album shortly afterwards. After completing a week of pre-production in April 2012, the band started recording Don't Panic with Mike Green, in Los Angeles, California and finished in May. The album features appearances from Cassadee Pope of Hey Monday, Anthony Raneri of Bayside and Jason Vena of Acceptance.
Happiness Is is the sixth studio album by American rock band Taking Back Sunday. Before the release of their self-titled album in mid-2011, the group had started working on its follow-up. Throughout the rest of the year, and 2012, band members mentioned in interviews they had various song ideas and tracked demos with producers Marc Jacob Hudson and Mike Sapone. In early 2013, the group spent two weeks in West Virginia, during which they wrote songs for the new album. Satisfied with how the demos turned out, they decided to bring in Hudson and Sapone to record their new album. In June and July, the band recorded at Rancho Recordo in Fenton, Michigan with Hudson.
Tidal Wave is the seventh studio album by American rock band Taking Back Sunday. During the touring cycle for Happiness Is (2014), the group worked on material for their next record. Following a holiday show in late 2015, guitarist John Nolan was expecting his second child and wished to be nearby. As a result, vocalist Adam Lazzara was informed by engineer Mike Pepe of a studio close by that he worked at, Sioux Sioux Studio in Charlotte, North Carolina. With the members living between Lazzara and Nolan's houses, they persuaded producer Mike Sapone to join them. In January 2016, the group were writing at the studio, and by March, they started recording. One change the group experienced was the ability to track every instrument, and subsequently listen to it back. This enabled the group to listen to the proceedings objectively, rather than talking solely about a single part.
