Tamwe Township (also Tarmwe Township; Burmese : တာမွေ မြို့နယ်, pronounced [tàmwèmjo̰nɛ̀] ) is located in east central Yangon, Myanmar. The township comprises 20 wards, and shares borders with Yankin Township in the north, Thingangyun Township and Mingala Taungnyunt Township in the east, Bahan Township in the west, and Mingala Taungnyunt township in the south. Etymology

"Tamwe" derives from the Mon language term "Tamoa" (Mon : တာမွဲ; [tamòa]), which means "one toddy palm tree." [3] [4]

Education

The township has 30 primary schools, four middle schools and six high schools. [2]

Population

As of 2014 March, Tamwe has a population of 165,313 with 45.2% male residents and 54.8% female residents. [5]

Insein Township is located in northern Yangon. The township comprises 21 wards, and shares borders with Shwepyitha township in the north, Hlaingthaya township in the west, Mingaladon township in the east and Mayangon township in the south. Insein is home to the Insein Prison, the most notorious prison in the country that houses hundreds of political prisoners. Until the 1990s, Insein, about 20 miles (32 km) from central Yangon, was beyond Yangon's city limits although by the 1980s, Insein was already integrated with the rest of the city. With the expansion of Yangon's city limits in the 1990s which also included founding new satellite towns, Insein was formally incorporated into Yangon.

Basic Education High School No.5 Tarmwe is a public high school in Tamwe Township, Yangon City. It used to be a Christian school when Burma was a British colony. Even before the school was nationalized, It has been a boys' school since establishment. The high school was formerly known as St. Francis Boys' School, and is located still to this day beside St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Yangon. Next to the church is Basic Education High School No. 4 Tarmwe, which was once also a Christian school.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Raymond (singer)</span> Burmese musician (1988–2021)

Raymond was an eminent Burmese rock singer, songwriter and former lead vocalist of the boy band Idiots. He was well known as a vocal critic of Myanmar's ruling military junta, and his involvement in anti-coup protests led to an arrest warrant being issued for him.
