Gameplay

Both the plot and art of Tasha's Game directly follow Tasha's Comic , the webcomic by Tasha Harris which was hosted at Double Fine's website when she worked there, and is now continued on her personal blog. The gameplay combines platform game and puzzle game mechanics in a way similar to Lucidity , although the main character in Tasha's Game is directly controllable. The game's main character is Tasha herself (as in her comics), and her cat Snoopy acts as the game's cursor. [2] The object of the game is to free various members of the Double Fine team, and of Tasha's family, by running and jumping across obstacles as well as using various power-ups collected along the way. The power-ups comprise the puzzle half of the gameplay, and are deployed at various locations [3] where Tasha can jump on them to let her access parts of the level that can't be accessed otherwise.

Reception

Tasha's Game was nominated for "Best of Casual Gameplay 2008" in the platform browser games category from Jay is Games. [4] [5] The International House of Mojo declared the game "easily better than Braid ". [6]

A platform game is a sub-genre of action video games in which the core objective is to move the player character between points in an environment. Platform games are characterized by levels that consist of uneven terrain and suspended platforms of varying height that require jumping and climbing to traverse. Other acrobatic maneuvers may factor into the gameplay, such as swinging from vines or grappling hooks, jumping off walls, air dashing, gliding through the air, being shot from cannons, or bouncing from springboards or trampolines. Games where jumping is automated completely, such as 3D games in The Legend of Zelda series, fall outside of the genre.

Double Fine Productions, Inc. is an American first-party video game developer of Xbox Game Studios based in San Francisco, California. Founded in July 2000 by Tim Schafer shortly after his departure from LucasArts, Double Fine's first two games – Psychonauts and Brütal Legend – underperformed publishers' expectations despite critical praise. The future of the company was assured when Schafer turned to several in-house prototypes built during a two-week period known as "Amnesia Fortnight" to expand as smaller titles, all of which were licensed through publishers and met with commercial success. Schafer has since repeated these Amnesia Fortnights, using fan-voting mechanics, to help select and build smaller titles. Double Fine is also credited with driving interest in crowdfunding in video games, having been able to raise more than US$3 million for the development of Broken Age, at the time one of the largest projects funded by Kickstarter, and more than US$3 million for the development of Psychonauts 2.
