Tegal Bahari is an Indonesian passenger train, operated by Kereta Api Indonesia which between Pasar Senen and Tegal via Cirebon Prujakan. The name of this train is taken from the motto of Tegal, Central Java, namely "Tegal" and "Bahari". Bahari in the motto of Tegal City stands for "Bersih" (clean), "Aman" (safe), "Hijau" (green), "Asri" (beautiful), "Rapi" (neat), and "Indah" (beautiful).
This train is one of the passenger trains with the longest series in Indonesia along with Gumarang, Kertajaya, Jayakarta, and Tawang Jaya train. [1] Starting 16 July 2025, Tegal Bahari train will no longer use long trains for this mixed train service.
The Tegal Bahari train is a spin-off of the Cirebon Express service group after the extension of the service line to Tegal since 2007. The launch of the Tegal Bahari train was also accompanied by the launch of a Tegal batik-themed dining car. [2] Previously, the Tegal Bahari train service was owned by Operation Area III Cirebon with executive and business class (2007-2016), but was later changed to executive and economy class new image (2016-2019). The Tegal Bahari train operated until 15 August 2019 before being replaced by the Argo Cheribon which began operating on 16 August 2019.
Initially, before the Tegal Bahari train operated, there was a train service serving the Tegal–Jakarta round trip via the northern route, the Tegal Arum, with economy class service. However, its operation was discontinued on 4 April 2016, because its trains were being used for the long-distance Tawang Jaya Train, and the route was continued by the Tegal Ekspres Train.
On 10 August 2012, the Tegal Express operated on its previous route, Tegal–Semarang Poncol round trip. [3] [4] Then on 1 August 2013, relaunched with a new route, namely Tegal–Pasar Senen round trip. Initially, the train was an additional Eid train [5] which utilizes the idle Progo series in Jakarta, but the operation of the Tegal Express was stopped on 30 September 2021 because it was replaced by the service by the Airlangga Train Surabaya-Jakarta route, so that the train service on the Tegal–Jakarta route is continued by a number of other trains, such as the Argo Cheribon, Jayabaya, Matarmaja, and Tawang Jaya train.
The Tegal Bahari train had been out of service for 2.5 years due to the merger of three train services from Operational Area II (Argo Jati, Cirebon Express, and Tegal Bahari). On 26 March 2022, the Tegal Bahari train resumed service using the Progo trains that had been idled in Jakarta.
As the enactment of new train travel chart 2023 on 1 June 2023,The Tegal Bahari train underwent a change in operational pattern, namely using the "idle" series Gumarang train (executive and business class). This was because at the same time, the Progo train also underwent a change in operational pattern, namely returning directly to Lempuyangan after arriving at Pasar Senen.
On 16 July 2025, Tegal Bahari train (along with the Gumarang train) officially ended business train services from all regular trains on Java, and replaced them with the new generation of economy trains made of stainless steel produced by PT INKA Madiun.
