Teleocephala is a supercohort of vertebrates, it is the grouping which contains the "crown group" of the Teleostei, the bony fishes. The name was coined by Mario de Pinna in his 1996 book Interrelationships of Fishes and the clade was given the rank of supercohort by Edward O. Wiley and G. David Johnson in 2010. [1] Some authorities treat Teleocephala and Teleosteomorpha as synonymous, however, this is only applicable when treating extant taxa and that the treatment of these taxa in the 5th edition of Fishes of the World is somewhat confusing as de Pinna's original Teleocephala is actually a combination of three taxonomical concepts. [2]

Actinopterygii, members of which are known as ray-finned fish or actinopterygians, is a class of bony fish that comprise over 50% of living vertebrate species. They are so called because of their lightly built fins made of webbings of skin supported by radially extended thin bony spines called lepidotrichia, as opposed to the bulkier, fleshy lobed fins of the sister class Sarcopterygii. Osteichthyes, also known as osteichthyans or commonly referred to as the bony fish, is a diverse superclass of vertebrate animals that have endoskeletons primarily composed of bone tissue. They can be contrasted with the Chondrichthyes and the extinct placoderms and acanthodians, which have endoskeletons primarily composed of cartilage. The vast majority of extant fish are members of Osteichthyes, being an extremely diverse and abundant group consisting of 45 orders, over 435 families and 28,000 species. It is the largest class of vertebrates in existence today, encompassing most aquatic vertebrates, as well as all semi-aquatic and terrestrial vertebrates.

The superorder Elopomorpha contains a variety of types of fishes that range from typical silvery-colored species, such as the tarpons and ladyfishes of the Elopiformes and the bonefishes of the Albuliformes, to the long and slender, smooth-bodied eels of the Anguilliformes. The one characteristic uniting this group of fishes is they all have leptocephalus larvae, which are unique to the Elopomorpha. No other fishes have this type of larvae.

Some authors have used the ordinal name Stiassnyiformes for a clade including Mugiloidei, Plesiopidae, Blenniiformes, Atherinomorpha, and Cichlidae, and this grouping does appear to be monophyletic.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Priacanthiformes</span> Order of fishes

The Priacanthiformes is a proposed order of marine ray-finned fishes. The order comprises two families, the Priacanthidae and the Cepolidae, which bear very little morphological similarity to each other but which have been shown to be sister taxa in repeated molecular analyses. The exact placement of the order within the series Eupercaria is incertae sedis. However, the more traditional classification followed in the 5th Edition of the Fishes of the World places both these families within the order Perciformes.
