The A&R EP is the second extended play (EP) by Norwegian singer and songwriter Annie. It was produced by Richard X and released 29 July 2013 on his Pleasure Masters label. The EP is influenced by 1990s house music. It received generally positive reviews from music critics.
After the 2009 release of her second album Don't Stop , she spent time working in Kent, England with production team Xenomania, feeling that "it's important to write stuff for other…to get inspiration so you don't keep on doing the same thing, over and over again." [2] She discussed the concept for The A&R EP before meeting up with X, and he began to prepare backing tracks. [3] In March 2013, Annie went to X's studio in London, where they largely wrote and recorded the EP was over the course of a week. [3] [4] To write songs, Annie began by recording melodies on her phone or iPad and adding lyrics. After finding beats, she would begin to record the song using Ableton Live or Logic Pro. [5] X cited Telstar Records' Deep Heat compilation series of house music as an influence on the tracks. [3]
Because of the diversity in the songs that she had written, Annie decided that they would not be able to form a coherent album. She instead assembled a "more dancey…more club related" EP, and indicated that other songs would be used to form two additional EPs. [6] The A&R EP's title refers to Annie and Richard X's names. [7] Its colourful cover art was inspired by rave culture. [2]
Annie described the opening track "Back Together" as being about "having the best time with the people you enjoy the most and listening to good music." [8] It was likened to dance-pop music by the Pet Shop Boys. [9] The song's music video was directed by Stian Servoss and Hildegunn Waerness. [10] It pays tribute to music video shows such as Total Request Live and Pop-Up Video . [11]
On "Hold On", Annie asks a lover not to give up on a relationship. [12] "Ralph Macchio" is a 1980s-influenced track about actor Ralph Macchio, of whom Annie was fond of watching as a child. [8] [9] It came from a discussion between Annie and X "your first love of a pop star or film star." [5] Macchio responded via Twitter, comparing the song to Bananarama's 1983 single "Cruel Summer". [4]
"Invisible" is a breakup song in which she duets with her alter ego "Mannie". [8] The song features clap drums, acid house squiggles, and "a heavy curtain of synths." [13] Its use of atonality drew comparisons to Glass Candy and Sophie. [14] For closing track "Mixed Emotions", Annie and X attempted to create a verse using an online translator but moved the results to the track's ending. [3]
Upon release, The A&R EP received generally positive reviews from music critics. Drowned in Sound rated it 7/10, noting that its "blissed out softness and heightened subtlety of these tracks means that the EP lacks a summer-defining chorus" but commending its consistency and maturity. [15] Pitchfork gave it 7.6/10 and stated that its aesthetic "could come off overly studied in the wrong hands, but [the EP] fortunately preserves Annie's most compelling aspect of all: her wink." [7] The NME gave the EP 6/10, characterising it as "a passion-project" that despite clear 1990s references, is "a love letter to the age rather than trite fetishisation." [16]

She began her recording career in 1999 with the underground hit single "The Greatest Hit" and gained international acclaim, particularly from music bloggers, for her debut album Anniemal (2004).
Anniemal is the debut album by Norwegian singer Annie. It was first released by 679 Recordings in September 2004. Annie began recording music in 1999 with her boyfriend, Tore Kroknes, who died in 2001. She returned to recording later that year, collaborating with Richard X, Röyksopp, and Timo Kaukolampi.
"Some Girls" is a song by English singer Rachel Stevens from the 2004 reissue of her debut studio album, Funky Dory (2003). It was written by Richard X and Hannah Robinson, and produced by the former, with additional production from Pete Hoffman. "The Greatest Hit" is a song by Norwegian singer Annie. It was written and produced by Annie and DJ Tore "Erot" Kroknes. The song samples Madonna's 1982 debut single "Everybody", and she received a co-writing credit. The track was released as a limited edition 7-inch single in 1999. It became an underground club hit in Norway and the United Kingdom. Retitled "Greatest Hit", the song was later included on Annie's debut album, Anniemal (2004).
Don't Stop is the second studio album by Norwegian singer Annie. Originally intended for a 2008 release on UK-based label Island Records, the planned release date was pushed back. Annie left Island for Norwegian independent label Smalltown Supersound, which released a revised version of the album in October 2009.
Sky Tonia Ferreira is an American singer-songwriter, model, and actress. As a teenager, Ferreira began uploading videos on Myspace of herself singing songs she had written, which led to her discovery by producers Bloodshy & Avant and a recording contract with Parlophone in 2009. She released her first extended play, As If!, in 2011, which combined elements of electropop and dance music. Ferreira's second EP Ghost (2012), however, incorporated pop with more stripped-down song structures and featured collaborations with Jon Brion and Shirley Manson, as well as the critically acclaimed track "Everything Is Embarrassing", which she composed with Dev Hynes.

Ghost represents a musical departure from Ferreira's earlier work, which explored more prominent elements of dance-pop. "Everything Is Embarrassing" is a song by American singer Sky Ferreira from her second extended play (EP), Ghost (2012). It was first premiered online on August 30, 2012, and was later released as a single on April 16, 2013, by Capitol Records in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The song was written by Ferreira, Ariel Rechtshaid, and Dev Hynes, while the latter two produced the track. An accompanying music video for "Everything Is Embarrassing" was directed by Grant Singer with no budget; it was premiered through Pitchfork on October 1, 2012, and sees Ferreira singing in various locations throughout Los Angeles.
"What Love Is Made Of" is a song recorded by British recording artist Katy B. Written by Katy alongside Goldon Warren, who also produced it under the name Geeneus, the track was released as a standalone single via digital retailers on 8 July 2013 by Rinse and Columbia Records. It was composed after Katy had been listening to dance genres. The theme conveyed in the lyrics is love while musically, the song has been described as a "trance-y" and "rave-y" dance song with its production containing synthesizers and piano. Katy later decided to not include it in Little Red (2014).
"You're Not the One" is a song by American singer Sky Ferreira from her debut studio album, Night Time, My Time (2013). "Sex" is a song by English band the 1975 from their second extended play (EP) of the same name (2012) and eponymous debut studio album (2013). The song was written by band members George Daniel, Matty Healy, Adam Hann and Ross MacDonald. The band co-produced the EP version of the song with Michael and Robert Coles, while Mike Crossey provided additional production. The album version, produced by Crossey and the band, was released as the lead single on 23 August 2013 by Dirty Hit, Polydor Records and Vagrant Records. Written at the age of 19, Healy said the song represents a love letter to prudish teenage girls.
"Red Lips" is a song by American singer Sky Ferreira from her second extended play (EP), Ghost (2012). It was released on July 17, 2012, by Capitol Records. The song was written and produced by Greg Kurstin, with additional songwriting provided by Shirley Manson. "Red Lips" is a pop rock song that describes the emotional deterioration of an individual that Ferreira disliked. It differs from the previous electropop styles displayed in her earlier works; this was deliberately done to prevent Ferreira from being branded in a similar fashion as Britney Spears, which she felt that Capitol Records had intended to do.
Nervous System is the third extended play and major-label debut by American singer and songwriter Julia Michaels, released by Republic Records on July 28, 2017. Most of the tracks on the EP were composed by Michaels and her frequent writing partner, Justin Tranter, as well as the songs producers, Benny Blanco, Stargate and Mattman & Robin. It was released on September 23, 2014, to accommodate the delay of the band's debut studio album, Living Room (2015). The EP produced the sole single "Infinity", which received praise from critics and commercial success. The song would later be included on their debut album alongside "Pitchfork Kids".
