The Madden Brothers are an American pop rock duo made up of twin brothers Joel Madden and Benji Madden, both of whom are also founding members of the rock band Good Charlotte. [2]
Twin brothers Joel and Benji Madden formed The Madden Brothers officially in 2014 as a side project separate from Good Charlotte, but have origins dating back to 2011. While with Good Charlotte, Joel was mainly the lead vocalist with Benji being lead guitarist and backup vocalist. [3] They released a total of five studio albums, two live albums, two extended plays, twenty singles, seventeen music videos and three music DVDs. All of their studio albums received certification including The Young and the Hopeless , which was certified 3× Platinum in the United States and reached number 1 on the Canadian Albums Chart. [4] During their time with Good Charlotte, the brothers saw the sale of over ten million albums worldwide. [5]
Joel and Benji had been working on The Madden Brothers project since 2011 when they began working on different ways of music. [6] They released a free mixtape a short time later in October 2011. [7] Titled Before — Volume One , it included collaborations with artists such as Casey Veggies, Wiz Khalifa, Machine Gun Kelly, Rockie Fresh, and The Cool Kids and was said to be made simply for the fun of music. [8]
The Madden Brothers began working with producer Pharrell Williams and planned to release an album in late 2012. [6] The plans fell through for the album release but both continued to work on the project. [5] In 2013, the Madden Brothers lend their voices to animated versions of themselves in the form of two characters, depicted as twin lizard punk rockers and brothers (hence their tattoo-like stripes and/or spots on their scaly skins) created by Michael Patterson.
The Madden Brothers finally released their first single in June 2014. Titled "We Are Done", the song was placed in regular rotation in major markets and became a top 40 track on Billboard's Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles and Alternative Radio charts. [2] It is a song about standing up for yourself according to Benji, made to inspire people to speak up for themselves. [9] The duo performed in the 88th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade that same year.
The Madden Brothers were coaches on the inaugural season of The Voice Kids Australia as well as Benji joining Joel as a coach on Seasons 4 and 5 of The Voice Australia until their departure in Season 6 who then got replaced by Boy George.
The Madden Brothers also began their own music company, MDDN. In 2015, they signed the band Chase Atlantic and worked with them. Chase Atlantic member Clinton Cave said, "The Maddens locked us away in a Burbank Studio for three months and threw away the key." The two brothers worked hard with the band together until they signed a deal with Warner Brothers Music. [10]

Following the release of their self-titled debut album (2000), the band met producer Eric Valentine and engaged him for their next album. Sessions took place at Barefoot Studios in Los Angeles, California and lasted from February to May 2002; Josh Freese of the Vandals served as a session drummer. Almost all of the songs on it were written by brothers Benji and Joel Madden; two of the tracks were co-written with Valentine and Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann. Before the album was released, Chris Wilson joined them as a permanent drummer, having been introduced to them in mid-2002. By the second half of 2003, they had begun writing for the next album. With producer Eric Valentine, the band recorded at Barefoot Studios in Hollywood, California, between March and June 2004. Over half of the album's material was written by Benji and Joel Madden, with the remainder being co-written with Valentine, Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann or guitarist Billy Martin. Preceded by the single release of "Predictable", The Chronicles of Life and Death was released through Epic and Daylight Records on October 5, 2004. Good Morning Revival is the fourth studio album by American rock band Good Charlotte. The band began working on new material in early 2005, however, drummer Chris Wilson soon left the band and was replaced by Dean Butterworth. The group took a break to focus on their personal lives before reconvening in early 2006, and eventually reconnecting with producer Don Gilmore. He was dismissive of the new material that the band showed him, and on his recommendation Benji and Joel Madden left Los Angeles, California and settled in Vancouver, Canada. After writing a number of new songs there, the brothers felt they were heading in the right direction. Meeting up every two weeks, the band members showed off the songs they were working on; Gilmore was again dismissive, challenging them to write material that was different. Another batch of songs was written before recording began in July 2006 and concluded in September.

Having completed the majority of the recording, Madden felt uncomfortable and realized the band was working with the wrong person after Benson removed two crucial verses from a track. After hearing rough mixes, Madden preferred the demo versions. Discussing this with producer Don Gilmore, he suggested the band start over in Vancouver, Canada. Recording sessions took place at the Armoury and Warehouse Studios before moving to Studio Can Am in Tarzana, California. Recording concluding in April 2010.
