Originally intended for an autumn 2010 release, the working title for this album was Everything Always Now. The Sea of Memories was produced by Bob Rock. The album took more than a year to materialise with pre-production beginning in June 2010 and recording sessions wrapping up a year later.
In an exclusive partnership with Electronic Arts, the band announced that they were offering a free download of "All My Life", which was made available on the video games' website. The band also performed the song on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on 22 September and Discovery Channel's American Chopper Live on 6 December 2011. [4] Their Chopper appearance marked the series' second highest rated episode to date. [5]
Many of the songs from The Sea of Memories are on the soundtrack for Ski Channel film tour film Winter, starring Ted Ligety, Simon Dumont, Sean Pettit, Sarah Burke and numerous other action sport stars. "The Sound of Winter" is the title track for the film, which was directed by the founder of the Tennis Channel Steve Bellamy.
In January 2012 the band released the album's third single, "Baby Come Home". To promote the single the band appeared again on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to perform the song on 2 February 2012.
The album's lead single, "The Afterlife", originally released in June 2010, reached the top 40 on both the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks (#34) and Alternative Songs (#22). The album's second single, "The Sound of Winter", released more than a year later in July 2011, fared better on the charts in North America, reaching the top ten on both the US Active Rock chart (#4) and the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks (#3). The song topped the Alternative Songs on 18 October, [6] becoming the first self-released single by an artist to reach number one on the chart, and later topped the Rock Songs chart, becoming the band's first number one single on the chart. The Sea of Memories received mixed reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, where they assign a "weighted average" rating out of 100 to selected independent ratings and reviews from mainstream critics, the album received a score of a 51, based on 10 reviews, indicating "Mixed or average reviews." [13] Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic gave the album 2 and a half out of 5 stars, stating, "The Sea of Memories is easily the most enjoyable collection of songs released under Bush's name." [12] Rockfreaks.net praised the album and the tracks "The Sound of Winter", "She's a Stallion" and "Stand Up", stating, "'The Sea of Memories' is every bit as good as classic Bush." [20] IGN gave the album 7 out of 10, stating, "Ultimately, Bush's return is far from perfect, but still proves to be a welcome return." [17] Love-It-Loud.com gave a positive review, saying: "Whether the songs edge towards the old Bush alternative rock style or go for more of a pop-rock approach, they remain catchy and full of hooks, with Rossdale’s voice at the forefront, as strong as ever." [22]
Many reviews were mostly mixed or negative, however. Kyle Anderson of Entertainment Weekly said that the album "adds exactly zero entries to the totally awesome Bush greatest-hits album that doesn't exist yet." [16] Steven Hyden of The A.V. Club said that the album "plays like an endless replay of Rossdale's past musical miscues." [14] Kevin Barber of Consequence of Sound said in an average review, "What The Sea of Memories does is inject some life into the Bush brand, proving that Rossdale isn't ready to call it a day." [15] Enio Chiola of PopMatters said that the album "will most likely please those few Bush fans who've been hoping for a reunion, but it will not change the minds of those who relegated Bush to nothing more than a disingenuous rip-off of so many more brilliant '90s alterna-rock acts." [18] Mikael Wood of Spin praised "The Afterlife" as a "big-chorused rocker", but added, "As for the ballads, you're better off YouTubing 'Glycerine' – or one of the tearjerkers ('Forever May You Run') from Rossdale's underappreciated 2008 solo disc." [21] Kerrang! gave the album a negative review and said of it, "As far as comebacks go, sadly, this is not a good one." Uncut also gave it two stars out of five and said, "Bob Rock's big production ladles on the reverb, merely emphasizing hollowness at the core." [13]

Sixteen Stone is the debut studio album by English rock band Bush, released 1 November 1994 by Trauma and Interscope Records. It became the band's most popular album, peaking at number four on the US Billboard 200 and boasting numerous successful singles. "Comedown" and "Glycerine" remain two of Bush's biggest hits to date, each reaching number one on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. "Comedown", "Machinehead", and "Glycerine" were the three songs from the album to enter the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching number thirty, number forty-three, and number twenty-eight, respectively. The album was certified 6× Platinum in the United States by the RIAA on 16 April 1997. Although notably less successful in the band's native Britain, the album was nonetheless certified Silver by the British Phonographic Industry.
Post-grunge is an offshoot of grunge that has a less abrasive or intense tone than traditional grunge. Originally, the term was used almost pejoratively to label mid-1990s alternative rock bands such as Bush, Candlebox, Collective Soul, Live, Foo Fighters, and Silverchair, that emulated the original sound of grunge.
The Science of Things is the third studio album by British band Bush, released on 26 October 1999, through Trauma Records. The follow-up to their 1994 debut Sixteen Stone, it was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London with engineer and producer Steve Albini. Its sound is more raw than that of its predecessor and has frequently been compared to Nirvana's In Utero (1993), which was also produced and engineered by Albini. The album is widely regarded as being the last major "grunge" album of the 1990s.
Deconstructed is a remix album by British band Bush, released on 11 November 1997, through Trauma Records. It did not feature any new material but was a collaborative effort between the band and various producers working in the electronic genre of music to remix some of the band's previously released songs. "Mouth " was released as a single in 1997 and became a minor hit, due largely in part to it being featured prominently in both the trailer and the 1997 film An American Werewolf in Paris.
Golden State is the fourth studio album by the British rock band Bush, released on 23 October 2001 through Atlantic Records. It is the last Bush album to feature Nigel Pulsford and Dave Parsons on guitar and bass, respectively. Bush would not release another studio album again until ten years later with The Sea of Memories (2011). The liner notes of Golden State cite the album in memory of Ian Lowery, founder of Folk Devils. In the documentary Making Of Golden State, the title is revealed as being inspired by the Golden State Freeway, which Gavin Rossdale used to use to get home.
Chris Traynor is an American musician, songwriter and producer, best known as the lead guitarist of the rock band Bush since 2001. Prior to Bush, he started in the post-hardcore scene with Fountainhead and Orange 9mm. “I got a publishing and record deal when I was nineteen, just super young.” Traynor had an on and off stint with Helmet while overlapping his Gavin Rossdale based projects of Bush, Institute, and Gavin Rossdale's solo album.
