The Sikh Awards is an annual awards ceremony dedicated to recognising the contributions of the Sikh community to a variety of fields. [1] The first annual Sikh Awards ceremony was held on October 10, 2010 as a tribute to the skills, achievements, and successes of the Sikh community. [2] The event was organized by The Sikh Directory.

The Sikh Directory

The Sikh Directory was published in 2006 and has since been updated and published annually. It is currently the world’s largest and most comprehensive Sikh business directory.[ citation needed ] It is an established and trusted brand which educates the next generation, stimulates community networking and connects buyers and sellers.[ citation needed ]

The Sikh Directory’s main objective is to serve, connect and unite the Sikh community around the world, to help promote and magnify the competitiveness and breadth of Sikh businesses internationally.[ citation needed ]

Award Categories

The awards are given to organisations and individuals that have shown considerable commitment to their respective fields, particularly Sikhs showing outstanding delivery of service and selfless voluntary service (seva). [3]

"For the organisation or individual that can best demonstrate how it has made exceptional financial returns, shown strong growth, innovative strategies and clear market leadership in its sector. This category also incorporates Business Man, Business Women and Entrepreneur awards." [3]

"For an individual, organisation, or society which can best demonstrate that it has the community at heart and has had a positive impact whilst improving the health and wellbeing of society." [3]

"For any Sikh educational establishment, teacher or individual that is taking a strategic approach to recognising, educating and developing the talent and skills within the community." [3]

"This category recognises directors, presenters, comedians, instrumentalists and musical artists etc… respected role models who promote the Sikh identity within the entertainment industry." [3]

"For an individual or organisation that has made a substantial positive impact within the media industry, including newspapers, websites, radio and television stations and all other media platforms." [3]

"Nominees in this category are employees whose contributions have made an exceptional difference on a local or global scale, in any field such as financial, medical, technology, government or legal." [3]

"This category recognises an outstanding individual who has shown exceptional vision and contribution to society through means of Seva (Selfless Voluntary Service)." [3]

"For an individual that has made a significant contribution to the sports industry on a regional, national or global scale whilst promoting their Sikh Identity." [3]

"For a Sikh who has made a significant contribution to Sikhism on a global scale, an individual who has demonstrated a positive impact on society whilst progressing Sikhism to higher levels." [3]

"Chosen by the community through the online voting process this category recognises an individual who has had a positive impact on people’s lives and has great admiration from others." [3]

"This highly respected honour is bestowed to a Sikh or non-Sikh that through their passion, dedication and commitment have made a significant contribution for the greater good of society." [3]

The following outline is provides an overview of Sikhism, or Sikhi.

Jainism (/ˈdʒeɪnɪzəm/), traditionally known as Jain Dharma, is an ancient Indian religion. Jain dharma traces its spiritual ideas and history through a succession of twenty-four leaders or tirthankaras, with the first in current time cycle being Lord Rishabhanatha, whom the Jain tradition holds to have lived millions of years ago, the twenty-third tirthankara Parshvanatha whom historians date to 8th or 7th century BCE, and the 24th tirthankara, Mahāvīra around 500 BCE. Jains believe that Jainism is an eternal dharma with the tirthankaras guiding every cycle of the Jain cosmology.

The principles of Sikhism state that women have the same souls as men and thus possess an equal right to cultivate their spirituality with equal chances of achieving salvation. Women in Sikhism participate in all religious, cultural, social, and secular activities including lead religious congregations, take part in the Akhand Path, perform Kirtan, perform Gatka and work as a Granthis.

Gurdwara Palatine Sikh Religious Society (SRS), based in Palatine, Illinois, is a United States-based Not-for-Profit Religious Organization and a place of worship, incorporated in 1972. It manages the largest Gurdwaara Sahib of Midwest America at 1280 Winnetka Street, Palatine on a Campus spread over fourteen acres of land at a prime location in Chicago's metropolitan area. In a seven-day-a-week religious program, devotees visit the Gurdwaara Sahib to make prayers, listen to the Sikh hymns (Kirtan), and discourses on Spirituality.

Barundi is a village located in the Ludhiana district of the state of Punjab in India. With a population of more than 4166, Barundi is one of the largest villages in Ludhiana.Barundi is also known for its state of the art drainage system and sewage treatment plant. Apart from these the village has its great religious significance too.

Italian Sikhs are a growing religious minority in Italy, which has the second biggest Sikh population in Europe after the United Kingdom (525,000) and sixth largest number of Sikhs in the world. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Milkha Singh</span> Indian athlete (1929–2021)

Milkha Singh, also known as "The Flying Sikh", was an Indian track and field sprinter who was introduced to the sport while serving in the Indian Army. He is the only athlete to win gold at 400 metres at the Asian Games as well as the Commonwealth Games. He also won gold medals in the 1958 and 1962 Asian Games. He represented India in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his sporting achievements.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Dalip Kaur Tiwana</span> Indian writer (1935–2020)

Dalip Kaur Tiwana was one of the foremost novelists and short-story writers of contemporary Punjabi literature. She won awards, both regional and national, and was a widely translated author. She retired as Professor of Punjabi, and Dean, from Punjabi University, Patiala. She is widely credited as a tour-de-force in the creation of the contemporary literature in the Punjabi language.

The CNN–News18 Indian of the Year is an award presented annually to various Indians for their work in their respective fields by the Indian media house CNN–News18. The awards are presented in various categories of Politics, Sports, Business, Entertainment, Public Service and Global Indian. The idea of the award was originated by journalists: Rajdeep Sardesai and Sagarika Ghose.

Ishar Bindra (1921-2015) was an Indian-American investor, entrepreneur and philanthropist. He was also the founder-trustee of the Sikh Forum of New York, senior vice president of the Hemkunt Foundation, and patron of the Sikh Art and Film Foundation.

Mukhbain Singh is an Indian field hockey player. He won the bronze medal at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

The GUBA Awards, or Grow, Unite, Build, Africa (GUBA) Awards, formerly known as the Ghana UK-Based Achievement Awards, are organized by GUBA Enterprise, a social enterprise dedicated to the support and advancement of Africans in the diaspora and on the continent through various socio-economic programmes and initiatives.

Rajkavi Inderjeet Singh Tulsi, was an Indian patriotic poet, Bollywood lyricist, and author. His writings in Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu covered every aspect of life, including religion, romance, labor's life, country's struggles, etc. Moreover, he was known for the simplicity in his writings.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Harkishan Singh</span> Indian pharmaceutical chemist

Harkishan Singh was Professor Emeritus at the Panjab University. He was a well recognized pharmaceutical academic, medicinal chemistry researcher and science historian. He had more than half a century experience in his respective fields to his credit. He worked at the Banaras Hindu University, University of Saugar, and the Panjab University in India, and abroad at the University of Maryland, University of Mississippi and the University of London.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Iqbal Singh (spiritual leader)</span> Indian Sikh educator (1926–2022)

Iqbal Singh Kingra was an Indian socio-spiritual leader of the Sikh community. He was the Founder President of The Kalgidhar Trust, The Kalgidhar Society and Baru Sahib. He was considered to be one of the most influential Sikhs in the world. He was awarded the Sikh Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. In 2018 he was bestowed with Shiromani Panth Rattan by Takht Sri Harmandir Ji Patna Sahib. In 2022, he was conferred with the Padma Shri by the Government Of India for his contributions in the field of social work.

Manika Kaur is an Australian religious singer, songwriter and philanthropist from Melbourne.

Manmeet Kaur is a Pakistani journalist and social worker. She is the first Sikh journalist from Pakistan and the first to be nominated for the 100 most influential Sikh personalities under 30.
