VG247 identified inspiration from Diablo and Don't Starve . [1] The Wild Eight is a survival game with cooperative multiplayer. After a plane crash in the Alaska wilderness, up to eight survivors band together to assist each other in the inhospitable climate. [2] To survive, players must craft tools and the basic necessities of life, such as shelter and a way to stay warm. Among other dangers, mutated wolves attack the players. Players who die respawn and can recover their equipment, which is dropped near their corpse. They can also cook and eat their own corpse. [3] The Wild Eight can be played in single-player. The final release contains a story-driven campaign and quests.

Development

The Wild Eight is the first big project for Fntastic, a studio in Yakutia, Russia. [4] Fntastic launched a Kickstarter campaign for The Wild Eight to raise $50,000 and build a community around the game. The project was fully funded with 11 days of the campaign to go. [1] A pre-alpha demo was released during the Kickstarter campaign. This version lacked multiplayer but was used to demonstrate the art style and gameplay, [5] such as crafting and resource management. [6] It entered early access in February 2017. [7] In November 2017, Fntastic sold the game to publisher HypeTrain Digital, citing "internal conflicts". [8] It left early access and was released for the PC on October 3, 2019, [9] and for the PlayStation 4 in October 2020. [10]

On December 11, 2023, The Wild Eight's Steam listing was updated to change the developer to Eight Points, Fntastic's previous name. Steam users suggested this was an attempt by Fntastic to evade criticism that bled over from their newest game, The Day Before , which bombed badly enough to result in Fntastic's closure. [11] Publisher HypeTrain Digital released a statement the next day that they changed the entry because they had terminated all business relations with Fntastic in 2017 and wanted to avoid a review bomb because of The Wild Eight's relation to Fntastic. [12]

Reception

Early access previews

Rock Paper Shotgun said the 2017 early access version they played was "definitely a game about watching meters". Commenting on the game's difficulty, the reviewer said he never survived long enough to find any quests. [13] PC Gamer played The Wild Eight in 2018 and praised the art style. However, the reviewer said the hunger mechanic was frustrating, and the crafting requirements were "a little silly". [3]

Post-release reviews

The PlayStation 4 version of The Wild Eight received "mixed or average reviews", according to review aggregator Metacritic. [14]

Early access, also known as alpha access, alpha founding, paid alpha, or game preview, is a funding model in the video game industry by which consumers can purchase and play a game in the various pre-release development cycles, such as pre-alpha, alpha, and/or beta, while the developer is able to use those funds to continue further development on the game. Those that pay to participate typically help to debug the game, provide feedback and suggestions, may have access to special materials in the game. The early-access approach is a common way to obtain funding for indie games, and may also be used along with other funding mechanisms, including crowdfunding. Many crowdfunding projects promise to offer access to alpha and/or beta versions of the game as development progresses; however, unlike some of these projects which solicit funds but do not yet have a playable game, all early access games offer an immediately playable version of the unfinished game to players.
